Jack - father died in Australia
Kate - killed her own father
Sawyer - his father commited suicide
Hurley - grandfather had heart attack (was his father even in his flashbacks?)
Shannon/Boone - again, no father figure...right?
Locke - father used Locke for his transplant - maybe we'll see his ultimate demise yet.
Walt - separated until just before flight 815
Sun - father wrecked her marriage by forcing/bribing Jin into uncomfotable roles.
Jin - denounced his lifestyle as a fisherman and left home
I wonder what JJ Abrams relationship with his father is like.

She only said she was Canadian to the Australian farmer, maybe so he would be less suspicious or something. Everything else about her backstory implies otherwise, especially her dad working for the Army (US Army, best I could tell) and taking a bus to Tallahassee, FL.

I don't think we've met Boone's father, his mother was married to Shannon's father. Shannon and her father were very close, I believe, but he died in the car accident (that caused Jack to meet his future wife).

I'm noticing a theme with displaced fathers/father figures for all the characters.
From a brilliant 1st season DVD review: "Not unlike J.J. Abrams' work on Alias, the failing of fathers is [a] central theme to this first season ..."

No, what was said was...

Kate: You knew? Why didn't you kill him?
Daddy Austen: Because I don't have murder in my heart.
(or something to that effect)

There was nothing of Daddy Austen saying that he knew Kate had murder in heart as a kid. It was more that he took a shot at her at that moment when they were talking.

I agree with your disagreement, I think it was the original/only computer.
But, didn't the timer stop counting down? I think thats why Walt or someone, was able to get a message through.

Very good episode.

Well...Since she's from Iowa on the show, that still wouldn't prove anything.

You can tell Evangeline is really trying hard to kill that Canadian accent for the show. Still, I caught one good "soary" in there.

Yeah, but not that she's seen the black horsie, everything's okay...

After 5 years, Austen decides he's had enough and leaves Kate behind, somehow knowing that this 5 year old has "murder in her heart" and will one day kill her biological father.
Mom marries Drunk.

And the reason Kate killed Drunk was because once she found out she had drunken wifebeater blood in her, she decided her life was over?
I've killed for less...

I'm still stuck on "who cut the film?" Could it have been the others, hoping they'd use the PC for internet chat, or maybe an island blog? (OH..I also say it definitely was the main PC as well.)

It sure feels like the writers put in a lil bit for us internet posters. And it usually is Hurley who is involved. Like "didn't see that coming, on island XX days and hasn't lost weight?" Also...we mentioned Jin's bracelet and BAM!..it's off a week or two later. (We know not to mistake coincidence...)

right, that's how i took it. We were just shown the clock so we could see that it was weird that the computer was beeping. normally it only beeps in the last 4 minutes.

like this: Michael hears the beep... "oh," he thinks, "must be the last 4 minutes." but he looks at the clock and sees 51:00. "whoa, must be something else, then! i better look at the computer!"

...and that it was weird that they could actually type on it. (Locke showed ya couldn't until the last 4 minutes.)

I think the key to Kate's motivation also lies in her Army father's quote about why he didn't murder Wayne. He said something like he didn't have a murderous heart in him. So, why would he think Kate has one? There's still something that's missing here and that's why I think the motivation seems ludicrous. So, even though I know a lot of people don't like Kate's flashbacks, I think we'll still get at least one more to get the whole story.

IIRC, Daddy Austen said the reason he didn't tell her that Wayne was her biological father was because he knew she would kill him.

Right, I think there is at least one more incident we'll see, maybe something from when Kate was a little girl. Dunno, maybe she killed a bird or shot a burglar or something, who knows.

It doesn't always take a strong impact to launch a car's airbags. Especially if it's a Ford.

Well I suppose the Others could have done it, so the people in the hatch wouldn't know about them or something...but why leave any of the warning in there at all?
