Way more than most fans, that's for sure. It's actually odd that Angel somehow made his top 3 of all time.
I was SHOCKED to see him write that ANGEL was a favorite show - that thread was all about nitpicking and 'that sucked' comments, I figured he hated the show.

With the exceptions of LOST and The OC, how many first seasons are on par or superior to latter seasons of a show? Season 1 is about laying the foundation, finding a direction to go in, establishing everything.

I don't know, it just seems like every 'season 1' is like that, so what people would call flaws, are understandable and easier to forgive.

I'm just different than most, I try to be objective with everything I watch/read etc , almost nothing is perfect I take both the good & the bad into account. When people really like a show, book, movie whatever, they seem to like everything about it, & often can't even admit something may be bad. My threads proved that, whenever I wrote I liked something, I'd get a post or 2 about it. But whenver I wrote I didn't like something, I'd often get pages of people arguing against it. And with shows like Angel & Buffy, with such intense fans everyone here really focused on negative comments. I flipped through that Angel thread, & I don't know what you guys are reading, I wrote tons of praise, way more than negative (except for the first season). And I never even posted about the last couple of seasons, which were the best. I did post though that there wasn't a single ep of the last season I didn't like. How much more positive can you be than that?

Like I said often in the Buffy thread, Farscape is my all-time favorite TV show, but that doesn't mean I didn't have HUGE problems with that, & main characters I hated.

I don't remember Sessa's comments regarding Angel Season 1...But I hated it. Just like Buffy. I'm glad I caught both shows on DVD (with the exception of Angel Season 5). I probably would have never continued with the show had I see some of the first episodes from either season. However, I'm in the minority with regarding Buffy Season 7 and ngel Season 5 in the top 3 seasons for each show...

Not too many. Alias is one. Veronica Mars is another. Both were on par with their seconds seasons. Aside from those two and Lost I can't think of anything other series that had a first season that was on par or superior to latter seasons.

Season 1 is about laying the foundation, finding a direction to go in, establishing everything.
Exactly. The first season is letting you get to know the characters and grow to care for them before things kick into high gear (although the kicked things into high gear a couple times early on and definitely towards the end).

By the way, I would have mentioned Veronica Mars, but I haven't seen any of season 2 (UPN is a 'premium' channel here so I have to wait for DVD instead) but I certainly didn't forget...what an amazing show that is!

Sorry, I'm sidetracking a little bit.

If I remember correctly, you are Canadian and living in the GTO area? Then good news, Veronica Mars will be airing on Sun TV for Season 3.

The oracle scenes were very cool, and I think that if this is the direction Angel is going, I am all aboard. It recasts Angel as a type of Hercules character, which raises him above boring vampire/detective status and will surely provide for more interesting television. To be honest, I was worried I was watching an undead version of CSI for a little while. And that would not be cool.

I was also quite touched by the B/A reunion and seperation, despite some of the clumsy love-dialogue. SMG did a good job.

That was "I Will Remember You". One of the best in the first season or the series for that matter. Very poignant episode.

When it comes to ANGEL, it's a bit of a detective show, it's a bit of a supernatural horror, it's a lot of a big-budget action movie, it's a bit of a comedy, and in some cases it's all or many of the above at once...so if there's one aspect of the show you find yourself not liking, rest assured it'll change and shake things up. Each season independently has a different feel to them as well.

Spoiler:
The next time Buffy shows up in L.A., Angel's attitude toward her at the end of her appearance cemented my love for the vampire...it was all so true, so priceless.

I am in the process now of rewatching the seasons... Well I have been for awhile... I am on season 6 now... almost to the end... I have to say there is a certain episode that I have to skip! It is far to sad! I just do not want to relive it all again! Season 6 is such a departure from the normal stories, however it is still all too good!

Angel season 1 and 2 are my favorites by far! I love all but 5 though... 5 was good, but it is not every close to being my fav. Doyle is a great character, and I loved all the seasons with him... Ehem...

Exactly. That's one of the biggest reasons, but obviously there are others. Both series are just epic. For many reasons. You got the tragic and epic love story. You got the high concept and epic story/character arcs, etc. The show at its core is about friends, family, doing what's right and life being a never ending struggle. A lot of the little big moments help make these two series even more epic. That's the difference between an ongoing series like these as opposed to a two hour Hollywood film. These two are more like novels unfolding before your eyes with characters you grow to care for (the little big moments help a lot). They take the time to really explore these great characters since they have the time to do so and get you more and more involved like you would be with a novel.

I just found this old post in another forum - a 'note' from Joss Whedon about ANGEL that was (likely, but I don't know for sure) written for the UK complete series boxset.

It's a great note:

Dear Angel Fan...

"..and she'll have a love interest, a mysterious stranger named Angel who turns out to be a vampire! But a vampire with a soul, cursed to walk the night in eternal remorse for his evil deeds.."

No wait. That's way too cheesy. Nobody will ever buy that.

Such were my thoughts as I developed the TV show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." I knew Angel wouldn't (forgive the pun) fly. I was frantic. And then something wonderful happened.

I totally didn't come up with anything better.

So this guy was born, and not only did people buy him, they loved him. I loved him, at least 76% platonically. I loved him enough to create, with my partner in crime David Greenwalt, his own show. "Angel". And then it got weird. Well, weirder.

The thing is, "Buffy" was a simple premise that developed into a complex show. "Angel" was not a simple premise, not for guys like Dave and me. We couldn't just have noble, handsome, dark hero rush in and save various days. We tried. That ain't life. We found that "Angel" needed to be a show about our darkest journeys, not unlike Buffy except that Buffy had a grounding; she had a destiny, an arc, a posse. We knew where she had to go. We had NO IDEA where Angel had to go. And so he went everywhere: up down, good, bad, left, farther left... off the edge of the world and home for supper and the thing is, it ended up being as much or more about our lives than Buffy was. We weren't 'chosen' (not for sports, anyway). We had no destiny. We lived on the edge of chaos, personally, narratively... even as Angel surrounded himself with more and more of a family (and we found more and more wonderful actors for David Boreanaz to play against), that central core of warmth and safety that Buffy enjoyed was missing. The result is before you in toto: The long, strange trip that is five years in the life a vampire. Not long enough, I would argue, but plenty with the strange. For your listy goodness, a few of the moments herein that made my life worth living:

Spoiler:

* --Angel locking a roomful of lawyers in with two peckish vampire gals.
* --Buffy swearing never to forget her time with Angel, right before she does.
* --Faith in the rain, begging Angel to kill her.
* --Princess Cordelia.
* --Darla's horrified accusation, "While Spike - SPIKE - was out killing a Slayer, you were busy saving Missonaries!... From me." (True emotional Vampire logic, courtesy of Tim Minear.)
* --Lilah dressing up Fred to seduce Wesley. (Gentlemen, start you therapists!)
* --Any and all karaoke.
* --Fred and Wesley, deeply drunk.
* --Gunn in the White Room, meeting his match.
* --The biggest, bloodiest and most personal Spike/Angel fight we've ever shot.
* --The silliest, most pointless Spike/Angel argument we've ever shot.
* --Dude, puppets!

With no star to guide us, we sailed into waters filled with dragons and mermaids and a few really impressive icebergs. We made some of our most compelling television, reinventing season by season, show by show, moment to moment. This is our odd little odyssey, and no, we never did reach the shores of safety, but that's sort of the point. We don't go through the Hell of existence - the pain, the drama, the meaninglessness and confusion because it's safe, or simple, or will end happily now or ever after. We do it because nobody ever come up with anything better.

So enjoy it. I did.

*Signed* Joss Whedon

I finished Season 4 of buffy, and season 1 of Angel.

Some highlights for me include: (spoilerized for politeness)
Spoiler:

1. Hush: Very impressive tv, and the gentlemen are so feaking creapy.

2. Wild at Heart: One of my favorite episodes thus far, the werewolf love affair was great. Sad to see Oz go of course.

3. Who are you: The faith/buffy rivalry didn't really ever get closure, and in this season I guess it never really does either. I still enjoyed their renewed feud though. I was really pretty surprised that Angel took pity on her, though I guess that was foreshadowed too...

4. Restless-This episode, which reminded me of the much hated Sopranos dream sequences, was incomprehensible at times but also very funny.

Overall S4 rests in S3's shadow partially because of the Mayor. His irreverance as the lead villain was perfect in tone for the show, while Adam's brutish philosophy was under utilized and hackneyed at times. The initiative suffered from a poor introduction into the season, and then was dragged down at times by Riley's boring character.

Still I thought that S4 improved overall on S3, with tighter dialogue and the introduction of meaningful struggles/development for each of the support chars. Willow is now really attempting to forge her own path, and Xander must deal with his non-college identity.

Now onto Buffy Season 5 & Angel season 2. Both big steps up from the two you just watched.

I guess I will jump on on the Buffy thread too......

Watched the first season when it first aired on TV, and basically lost interest back then. The series has resparked my interest again and I am starting from scratch watching all of the seasons through Netflix now.

Watched season 1 and liked it.

Almost done with season 2. Finished the last episode on disc 5 (Go Fish) crappy episode, waiting for Becoming: Part 1 & part 2 to finish it out.

Since season 2 is really fresh, my spoilered thoughts

Spoiler:
I have really enjoyed season 2, except for the few cheesy episodes (which were fun anyways, Reptile Boy anyone??) I loved it. I really hated the I Only Have Eyes For You episode, i was bored off my ass with that one. One things that absolutely pissed my off, and almost made me stop with the show is killing off Jenny Calendar. Damn that shit sucked ass! I really liked her. Fuck you Joss!!! Eat me.... Ha kidding, for real, I really liked her character and her relationship with Giles/Scooby Gang, I wish they wouldn't have made her so expendable so early, I would have liked to seen her more in future seasons. It was a big let down in season 2. The Passion episode was very, very good, very well done, emotional and heartbreaking......yaa call me a puss its ok. What Angel did was fucked up! I also like how Cordelia's character has come along and giving her character a little more depth instead of just the stuck up popular girl at school, I like that. The heart necklace Xander gave her, then when he went to get it back, and she was wearing it, and he didn't know, very good scene. Plus her character is getting a little more whittier, instead of just dissing on everybody. I like Cordy/Xanders scenes in Killed by Death at the hospital, and I loved the Halloween episode as well. Too bad Cordelia doesn't stick around for the future Buffy seasons, I would have loved to see her more. Missing 2 of my favorite characters in future seasons is going to suck, but I am looking foreword to more Spike & Dru (I hope) As I have read on here the season get better. I hope so. I am going to miss Cordelia and Jenny Calendar.....I am still pissed at you Joss

Prepare yourself for an incredible finale and you might be a little pissed (in a good way, because of Joss' genius ).

Well, Cordy is in one more full season of Buffy. After that she goes to the spinoff series, so you have plenty to look forward to and her character continues to evolve far more than you might imagine. On Buffy four of the best characters aren't even regulars or haven't showed up yet. The character who became arguably the best character on the spinoff hasn't even showed up on Buffy yet either (where he gets his start).

If you're pissed at Joss now prepare to be pissed several more times, especially after watching the spinoff; He's brilliant. Instead of giving the fans what they think they want Joss usually has had the guts to purposely go against that to keep things interesting and shocking.

I got through Season 5.

Spoiler:
Glory and her minions were great; they really had a good dynamic. Also, S5 contains some really priceless episodes in this season, and I understand why its rated so highly. One of my favorite moments in the season is when Willow goes super-witch on Glory…Riley also finally leaves, thank God. Spike is really involved with the scooby team, and he has always been one of my favorite chars.

I enjoyed seeing some of the slayer mythology come into the mix throughout the season, along with the doubt that it brings to Buffy's mind about the actual nature of slaying. At one point one of the vamps (don't remember which) implied that Buffy's power rested in some type of demon-ness, which is something I had long suspected.

The death of her mother was handled with grace and surprising depth. The directing was excellent, and I was quite impressed with those episodes (though I didn't necessarily enjoy it). With Giles fading in his leadership role, Buffy really is assuming more responsibility and Hero-ness.

I really blew through this season, it was quite satisfy and obvious that Joss really got on a roll with the characters & plot.

I went to start S6 last night, but I realized my Disk ½ package was actually Disk ¾ (I have 2 Disk ¾ combos!) I was very upset, so I went ahead and started to download s6 onto my pc and most likely will start tonight. Instead I started AS2, and I already enjoyed it more then S1!

Yep. I told you Buffy season 5 and Angel season 2 were gonna be big steps up.

You ain't nothing on Angel yet. lol. It gets better and better. Prepare yourself for a very dark & gloomy Buffy season 6. I think it's one of the most misunderstood seasons after my second viewing of it. People either rank it near the top or near the bottom, but it's full of metaphors and symbolism. It also contains arguably the best non finale episode as well as arguably the best arc and finale. Its three part finale can stand with the best of them (though several of Buffy's finales are so close in quality it's almost impossible to pick the best.). It hit a little bit of a rough patch in the middle of the season (better on the second viewing on DVD btw), but picked right back up and went out with a huge bang.

Let us know what you think about Buffy season 6 and Angel season 2.

I'll just jump OT with you for a sec there and say I just finished Veronica Mars S1 - one of Joss' favorite shows, btw - and damn, it was good! Can't wait to start watching the S2 discs next week, and I'll definitely be watching S3 on TV when it starts in October. Surprised I missed out on it these past two years already - but then again, that's the greatness of TV on DVD.

Now, back to the Buffyverse, I'll completely agree with Slayer2005, in that Angel just gets better and better with each season. It's a different tone than Buffy, and didn't have quite the patchy spots that Buffy, as much as I love the show, too, could have here and there. It's truly something to watch the characters grow and develop on Angel the way they do - even more so than some did on Buffy.

That was a very good idea. Great show. I got my best friend, my cousin, my sister and even some random DVD Talker (who was about to give it a pass because he though it was sci-fi and found out it wasn't. I talked him into giving it a chance though) all hooked on the show.

Those are great odds. Pretty much anyone who loves Buffy & Angel will love Veronica Mars.

BTW, regarding Buffy season 6, you need Netflix or to be less cheap. Just hope your downloads are good quality from the first time they aired or they could be edited.
