"Venus" by Frankie Avalon. It was a song from his childhood. The same song he played right before he was going to kill the kidnapped boy.

The ending was crazy good. I was waiting for them to show Dexter waking up from a bad dream and cop out. I should have known better the writers for this show are the best.

Dexter's not going to die. It's more likely that he gets an ending that finds him in the same position he was at the beginning of the series: alone, hiding in plain sight, and virtually friendless. The difference will be that he finally accepts his own nature and is content living two lives for the rest of his life.

Fantastic episode. They really did a good job on everything, from the acting to the directing to the editing. Rita always annoyed me a little bit, but she was a major part of the show and I'm sad to see her go. Next season is going to be fantastic, definetly going to be different from now on however.

The last thing this show needs is an exact repeat of season one. They already did the Dexter as a loner thing to perfection, and there ain't no turning back.
And the ending was certainly a clean slate, in that it allows them to go in a completely different direction with the show. It certainly won't be a repeat of this season. I wouldn't be surprised if there was no arch villain next season at all.

Some people get butt-hurt about book plotlines, so I'll spoil:

It wouldn't make sense for Dexter to talk to Rita. Dexter's dad knew about his dark side, whereas Rita didn't have a clue. Unless, of course, you're thinking she will help with the grocery list.

Then, right before Dexter kills Trinity, he says, "It's already over. It's already over." Meaning, he's already killed Rita.
I'm glad that conversation makes a little more sense, because when I first watched it, I was like, "What the fuck are they talking about? The writers choked on a dick with this scene."

Awesome episode. The ending also reminded me of Seven.
Unfortunately for me, the ending could've/should've been more amazing than it was. The reason, you ask? I'll tell you. I was anxious to get home to watch the finale as I was watching something else on my notebook while on the train ride home. When I was done watching, I put the notebook in standby and overheard the fucking moron sitting across from me telling his friend the ending of the episode in great detail. When I realized what he was talking about, it was already too late. This is the first time I've heard someone talk about the show outside of work (and this forum) - good timing, huh? Yeah, I wasn't happy.

Some interesting news, Clyde Phillips, who was Dexter's Executive Producer and showrunner, just quit the show to spend more time with his family.
Showtime just hired Chip Johannssen, who was a Producer on 24, Dark Angel and Moonlight, as the new showrunner for season 5.

But with that said, I don't want it to happen. I feel it would be kind of a cop out--"We killed her, but she's still here!." Next season Dexter can question his motives and actions with relation to how Rita would have thought, but I don't want to see a three way with him, his dead dad and his dead wife.

Just because she didn't know about it doesn't mean Dexter's subconcious wouldn't inject in her commentary.

But at that point, does Trinity really know who Dexter really is? Isn't he still under the impression that Dexter was just a corrupt member of the Miami Police Department who's looking for shakedown money?
I don't like the idea of Rita being a ghost to Dexter. Harry is enough. Although they missed an opportunity by not having Brian (Dexter's brother/Ice Truck Killer) as a ghost. It would fit in nicely with Michael C. Halls career of having his character talk to his ghost father and brother (ala Six Feet Under).
The saddest part of this episode I found was watching baby Harrison sitting there in blood crying when his mom is only a few feet away from him dead. It's always sad when a baby loses his/her mother, and even worse when they witnessed her murder (even if he doesn't remember it growing up).
I'm looking forward to how they're going to explain Rita's death to everyone else. Will Dexter let it be known that it was Trinity who did it, or will he fear that information could lead to a discovery about him forcing him to cover it up? Will they continue S5 from the next day, or will they fast-forward a month later? If it's the next day, we'll probably see her balling her eyes out when she finds out about Rita - since Deb always seems like a wreck.

I didn't know that a major character was going to die. I was shocked by Rita's death. It was actually a very disturbing way to end the season. (In a very good way)
