Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special
Okay. I've *never* watched a single episode of Doctor Who, but still being around after 50 years, I admit I'm curious. What's the best way to get a good intro to Doctor Who without going all the way back to the very first episode? Is it one continuous story? Or are there multiple series under the name Doctor Who (like Star Trek TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, etc?)
Thats with Christopher Eccelston as the 9th Doctor and go from there.
The new Series seasons are up on Netflix too.

It's one continuous series with 11 different Doctors - 12 in December. The 2005 revival series continues from the classic series with a big, unseen Time War in-between them. You can start there to get a feel for the show. Series 1 - 4 has (sort of) an overarching storyline and a lot of backstory to the Time War. Series 5 (and the 11th Doctor) begins a new story arc that ends this December. You could start there to be current.
Or you can just jump into a specific Doctor and go from there.
Better catch up quick. The 50th Anniversary episode premieres in 90 minutes.

These pre-show people make me really appreciate Chris Hardwicke and Talking Dead/Bad right now.

That was awesome.
The only thing that bothered me was Timothy Dalton not returning as the Lord President during the war scenes. Everything else was tied together perfectly, even to the point of them all remembering it ever happening.
The next series will be tremendous if there are indeed more ties to the older series and Doctors planned in a search for Gallifrey. Hurt mentioning that he wasn't only going to be in the 50th special does make sense because of that.

LOVED it.
Loved the Curator at the Museum, the crowd watching it where I was went nuts when he appeared.
Loved the quick shot of Capaldi's eyes.
The banter between 10 and 11 was awesome. You could see the joy in the actors' eyes, getting to work together.
The only thing that goat a bit of a boo was them not showing a couple more seconds of War Doctor regenerating into 9.
And, jesus, Jenna Coleman is gorgeous.

As you can imagine, our sold out theater went nuts too when they froze Gallifrey, and at the end with Tom Baker. Nice surprise with Colin Baker being the narrator for the special behind the scenes featurette

One thing that bugs me, and I guess its mostly for recognition value, is that they always use the movie version of number 8, more so now that we've seen McGann in his last moments as 8.

IIRC, they shot Night of the Doctor as they were wrapping the production for the 50th, so I doubt they'd have the new costume ready to go for the final shot.
I loved the special. At first I thought it felt a little too small, but once they dispensed with the Zygons it got big in the best way possible. I loved the little clip of Nine in his TARDIS, and of course 12 showing up. I lost it when the curator arrived, though. Moffat really knocked it out of the park.

Peter Davison put together a really fun special of his own for the 50th: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01m3kfy

Was this broadcast anywhere in 3D? I know the preorder I have with Amazon includes the episode in 3D. I'm curious as to how it looked.

The simulcast looked very good in 3D, especially the Gallifreyan paintings. Sound was shite, though.

Re: Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebrations/Special
The sound was the only one major letdown for us too. The 3D was decent, the score and special effects sounds were great too, but the dialogue really suffered. It felt like it was in mono or 2ch stereo or something; it was very weak and hard to hear.
We arrived 90 minutes before the start and I thought we would be safe, but most of the theaters (I think it was showing on 5 screens) were at least half full. I found out that some arrived almost 4 hours before the start!!
Not a lot of people in costumes, but there were a lot of Tennants and Smiths suits going on, and a few Daleks and Cybermen. The theater staff had to move people away from the hallways because it was getting congested with people just standing around taking photos.
I got the sense that our theater had predominantly Tennant fans (most cheers were when he first appeared). For those who watched at home, the theater version had a Tennant / Smith pre-show segment talking about the film in 12D for the 100th anniversary... and Strax did his bit about theater etiquette and turning off cell-phones (or he will come kill you). I think the after-show featurette was in theaters only (I could be wrong), and it was nice seeing Colin Baker on the screen.
I don't think I've ever had this much fun at the movie theater. So crazy to sit amongst over 1000 Who fans. I thought An Adventure in Space and Time was amazing, but this was at least equal to it in terms of satisfaction.
Seeing how well the shows sold out, I wonder if it could be a yearly event where the Christmas special could be simulcast in theaters too. I bet that could rake in some serious money. There were so many families and kids around, I think a bit of money can be made if the BBC did this yearly.
