Re: Doctor Who (S8E04) -- “Listen” -- 9/13/14

Has any one noticed this:

L I S T E N is an anagram for S I L E N T?

Probably a fortunate coincidence.

I don't know, there were multiple times when the Doctor mentioned the silence. He was talking about there being no noise, but we've pretty much been trained to pick up certain words and phrases associated with the show and "The Silence" is one of them.

Re: Doctor Who (S8E04) -- “Listen” -- 9/13/14

While I did like this episode...

I'm not pleased with Clara being The Most Important Person In Everything The Doctor Is About, Ever. Once was enough. Also not pleased with Clara and Pink now forced to be in a relationship because we know the outcome instead of letting it happen naturally. Also, if they end up being the parents of the entire race of Time Lords... ugh.

Her lying/not telling the Doctor anything... screw that.

And am I the only one getting a huge Utopia vibe from this entire season? Going to the end of time, people looking for Utopia/The Promised Land... I doubt this will lead to The Master or anything (which is who I thought the kid was, to be honest), but still it's all very familiar.

Re: Doctor Who (S8E04) -- “Listen” -- 9/13/14

I thought it was a decent episode overall. Capaldi has definitely found his footing. The Danny Pink stuff felt a bit forced (to me). The importance of the barn was really cool and made total sense now that it's put into context.

I remember when a companion was just a companion. Not Bad Wolves, Girls Who Waited or Impossible Girls. Gimme another Martha.

^The Master rumor popped up about a year ago. A lot of fans thought that "Danny Pink" would become the Master at some point. Not looking like that now.

Re: Doctor Who (S8E04) -- “Listen” -- 9/13/14

I loved this episode (I also quite enjoyed the two previous episodes as well). We know that Moffat is big on making his companions feel super important to the Doctor, so I don't mind that Clara is doing that yet again. And especially when it's so well done. I have a feeling this episode will have repercussions down the line as well, but even if it doesn't it's a brilliant one-off.

I also love how Moffat intentionally drew comparisons to Blink in order to fake out the audience. Well done.

I actually think The Master has something to do with The Promised Land/Heaven. Maybe even Missy is actually The Master. There's always the talk of a possible female Doctor when there's going to be a new one, perhaps Moffat has decided to give us a female Time Lord but not a female Doctor.

There have been female time lords before. Most notably Romana and The Rani.

Capaldi might be a one and done Doctor. The ratings in the UK are crashing.

Not surprising, the first 3 episodes were a chore to get through and the only reason I watched this one was because of the good word of mouth here.

Yes. Waaaaaaaaay back during the Tom Baker era, it was implied that "Time Lords" were a higher social order than normal Gallifreyans. You had to go to the academy to become a "Time Lord." Normal Gallifreyans did the menial tasks (like TARDIS repair). There were also Gallifreyans who rejected technology and wandered the wastelands of Gallifrey - The Shobogans or "Outsiders."

If all future Doctors have to meet a minimum fucakbility threshold with tween audiences, my days of not being interested in this show are certainly coming to a middle.

Into the Dalek and Robots of Sherwood were really odd choices for second and third episodes. They were too quirky for so early in Capaldi's run; they should have been held back for the second half of the season and led off Capaldi's run with more traditional episodes.

I think it has very little to do with that. The episodes have not been good and since there has been no good faith built with Capaldi people are quick to bail.

I think the producers got wowed by Capaldi being a great actor. The problem is that "great" and "right" aren't the same thing. Bad scripts aren't helping.

I think they were trying to reassure the audience by putting the "fun" episodes up top, to show that Capaldi's more acerbic persona wasn't going to change things that much.

I still think Capaldi could be a great Doctor. But I agree that he may not be a good fit for the current incarnation of the program.

And were the first batch of episodes really that bad? I'm not being facetious and I'm not knocking the show; some of the best episodes in Doctor Who's history have come after the revival, and Tennant and Smith have both done fine work in the role. But while I haven't been particularly enjoying this season so far, the episodes seemed to me to be about average for nuWho. Do they really stand out that much to current fans?

Re: Doctor Who (S8E04) -- “Listen” -- 9/13/14

The problem with Doctor Who isn't Capaldi, it's Moffat.

So far this season is particularly Moffaty... lots of interesting ideas that are poorly executed into stories, lots of twee nonsense that may or may not pay off later (this paradise/Heaven/Missy stuff), underwhelming endings.

I'm also going to out on a limb and say that having the companion having a life outside of the TARDIS really fucks up the dynamics of the show. We should just have the Doctor and Clara zipping around the universe; instead we have the Doctor traveling alone, finding trouble, then dragging Clara away from dates to investigate. It's really fucking annoying and eats up story time.

Well I think aside from the debut episode, this season has been better than I expected. I sincerely hope that the BBC doesn't get cold feet and try to pull Capaldi so soon, because I'm already loving him as the Doctor and I want him to continue.

Tho it's a blink and you'll miss it "cameo," Abslom Daak: Dalek Killer will officially enter Doctor Who canon with this episode.

Not as good as last week but another top notch episode in my opinion. Capaldi has really come into his own as The Doctor and his lines, while not as many, are some of his best yet.

Good bits of dialogue in this episode, but the story didn't work for me until the very end when the actual plot was revealed. It was nice.

Best Capaldi episode yet. I always like a good puzzle episode, so long as the wrap-up delivers. Tonight's did.

One thing that I need to mull over is how emphatic the Doctor was that he hates the Architect given the reveal.

My favorite of the season so far...for a show about a time traveller, episodes where time travel plays a central role are few and far between.

Wow, maybe I was just too tired, but I thought this was a bad episode. It had many elements of older episodes and just feel very flat for me. Maybe I'd need to try watching again.

Either it's the stories, writing, or the two together aren't syncing up for me. I know all Smith's weren't great, but by the end of the 11th Hour I was less concerned about Tennant being gone. Here, I can't say I'm good with the change.

Side note, 10'had a mannerism where he'd say, "No, no. no. no. no." 12 is doing something quite similar with his "Shut Up." bit. Not bad, just something I picked up on.

And heck - I did not realize that was Keeley Hawes. Ashes to Ashes needs to get on Netflix so I can watch. Would like to see where that ends up.

He was channeling his inner Shia LeBouef?
