Re: Doctor Who (S8E05) -- "Time Heist" -- 9/20/14
I think he's realized that there's some sort of connection with Clara and the future of time travel but he's still unsure of what it is exactly

I have to be honest...I'm feeling rather "meh" about Doctor Who this season, despite the fact that I really think Capaldi is a good fit. I guess good acting can only go so far when the writing isn't there. I'm honestly thinking about tuning out for a while and catching up on Blu-ray later.

And that will be the key to bring the Time Lords back.

I know what you mean. There's just something 'off' about Capaldi's Doctor. I can't quite put my finger on it, but he seems cold and distant in a way that his predecessors didn't. Maybe it's because we've spent almost a decade with Tennant and Smith who were sort of manic and needy and charismatic Doctors, whereas Capaldi seems calm and aloof. And having Clara be a part time companion doesn't help.

I'm pretty meh on the season so far, as well. One of the most important aspects of the show is the relationship between The Doctor and his companion. So far, the chemistry just isn't there.

Didn't care for the story or style they were trying to achieve this go-around. It picked up once we got into the private vault and everything was summed up. But that was after 35 minutes of "meh."
Not too sure about next week.

I thought it was odd that they never came back to the opening scene. Why even start there if we never find out how they escaped.
I thought the plot was silly but enjoyed the episode. The main point was the doctor and mr pink meeting up. The yes sir scene was great.
The ending with Missy seems to suggest many people have been dying with some relation to the doctor. It is also clear that these people are not saved because we see the officer's arm.
The doctor runs off with a under aged girl.

I was surprised that I actually enjoyed the episode as it was Clara and Pink centered and I'm not a fan of her.
It'll be interesting to see if the disruptive student shows up again or was just a one off of the Doctor feeling the need to show off.

I think it was just to show that Clara is running off with the Doctor for adventures and then back to when she left to resume her life because they haven't hammered that point home yet.

Best episode of the season.
Although I'm guessing the stupid watch will retroactively explain things in "Listen" later this season.

Really enjoyed it. The premise was fun, cool creature and I like the cantankerous grumpiness of Capaldi's Doctor. We also got another "Tiny brain" moment from him which cracks me up. I also like when the Doctor seems clueless about Clara's appearance. "How can you think I'm her dad when we're the same age?" Had a blast with this one. The watch was so friggin' cool. Funny to hear Clara say she was going to confiscate it. I was thinking the same thing.

I really enjoyed this episode. Some huge character development. I wonder if Clara will end up doing something she wouldn't normally do without realizing it, causing her to choose between Danny or The Doctor.
Did I catch an Barbara reference? "I had one like you before."
I agree the Doctor quips about her looks and age are so great.

This Doctor is so much more imperious than the previous ones. I thought Danny was being an ass with his "officer" routine.

Yeah, I'm not liking Danny so far, but that may be just because the whole romance story with him and Clara has been so tedious.

Re: Doctor Who (S8E06) -- "The Caretaker" -- 9/27/14
I'm actually quite surprised by the reaction to this episode...I love Capaldi, although remain *far* from sold on his Doctor as of yet - but the fault there lies squarely with the writers, not him or his performance. You can see glimmers of brilliance despite godawful characterization so far, and I've no doubt that Capaldi will manage to overcome the pisspoor writing staff's quality this season/start having writers who write *for* him and the kind of performances he's been giving... the "slightly aloof old, wise soul - very much with a dark side, but also with a quirky/odd sense of humor... usually black humor and/or at wildly inappropriate moments."
Likewise, this episode was so awful for me that, two thirds in, I ended up hitting stop - and don't expect I'll ever resume. Probably the first and only time I've done so in nine years of the show so far. Quite frankly, I could do without yet another episode hitting me over the head with just how awesomely amazing good old Danny Pink is! Me? I don't get it - this is a horrible, horrible, *horrible* character. But the writers are seemingly -clearly- deeply in love with him as both a character and imminent secondary companion? So much so they devote another episode to him so soon - this one, having almost the entire episode being the "Danny Pink Show!" and not even trying to hide the fact. Or focus on anyone -nor anything- else for the whole 44 minutes.
Really? I mean come on here, writing staff - the first bloody week of Clara/Danny's relationship (meaning a week in their lives, not the real world) and a threat just so happens to pop up at the very same goddamned place both of them work at? Umm... nothing contrived or forced there, is there? In all the universe - throughout all of time - and the super-bad alien threat of the week just so happens to magically appear within *feet* of the school they *both* just so happen to work at?! Requiring the Doctor to join in and "work" there too as caretaker, no less? Originality/Creativity, thy name is obviously not Stephen Moffet.
Pink? It's just a terrible character, and a wooden/poor actor. Hey, he's a military dude! Wait, no, he's a schoolteacher! He's an absolute asshat jackass on their first date, just inexcusable.... but wait! Clara realizes they have kids in yet another totally conceivable plot piece wherein said descendant -along with looking like a literal clone of Mr. Pink, despite however countless many generations removed he was - is... the last human being alive! So.... Clara just goes and forgets Danny's entire ghastly outburst on their first date. You know, the date where people always go all out to act like anybody except for themselves, putting on a show to come off as unrealistically perfect as they can manage?
In summary, like I said, the character isn't likeable IMO. The actor is about as stiff as a board. Even the character's backstory... the loveable teacher who was also a soldier who happens to have PTSD or something... just isn't appealing or well written/constructed.
So yeah, all things considered? You can then imagine how I might not have found this episode particularly watchable. Such a shame, coming on the heels of the first genuinely decent episode this season last week- one of my favorites in a long while, even - and hopefully it returns to that direction next week. And, with luck, maybe Mr. Pink will get stuck at the end of time. Permanently.

Wasn't Pink running PE in his first episode?
I think he was also shown as a Maths teacher in the same episode, but still.

I think this has been the best season since season five. Loved this episode, loved where they're taking the Doctor, and I love the fact that they haven't been hitting us over the head with arc episodes like they've been doing since season six. Moffat feels refreshed with a new Doctor, IMO. And I think Capaldi's doing a great job of being more distant and alien than any of the previous NuWho Doctors have been.

Overall, thought the episode was pretty "meh." It felt very reminiscent of "Amy's Choice" from Series 5 with Clara caught between the Doctor and Pink. Who will she eventually choose blah blah blah? They're really pushing the Clara/Pink relationship. So much so that I'm starting to think they're building to something. Either Jenna Coleman leaving at Christmas as rumored or something terrible happening to Danny Pink. But since we already know he'll eventually have children, it's probably Jenna leaving.
Sad we didn't get a cameo by William Russell.
