I actually really like Capaldi as a "grumpier" Doctor. I just wish the story ideas and plotting weren't so bad.

I liked the episode as well, despite the shoddy science. And I also noticed that they lifted the regeneration limit.

It doesn't have to go that far. Just not being a super grump would be cool.

I neither seek out nor avoid casting spoilers so I don't know anything on that front, but I hope this isn't leading to Coleman leaving the show. She's one of the better actresses they've had as a companion, even though I find her character a bit bland as written.

If she were to leave it would be cool if Clara were killed in a risky situation of the Doctor's making and then appears in "Heaven" and we get into that storyline.

What's wrong with giving the Doctor an arc? This Doctor reminds me of Six, and I mean that as a compliment.

Are you my mummy?!!!!!

Another great episode in my opinion. I even didn't mind Clara once I stopped yelling she quit last week.

After the not so good moon episode I thought this would be horrible. This was actually a great episode. They continue to hit on themes presented in other episodes, soldiers, sacrifice, and the coldness of the doctor. I love the part where the doctor asked if it would be easier for Clara if she believed he was faking being cold.

Is it wrong of me that the Orient Express winding through space reminded me of this?

That moment when the Doctor absorbs Maisie's memories just felt so right to me, and it was the clearest reminder I think we've had to date that beyond all the coldness, the detachment, the alienation -- this is still the Doctor, and if there is any way he can stand between someone and danger, he will do it.

Doing that helped a LOT. This doctor is coming off so cold. Even when there was not much he could do until he figured it out there are better ways to state things.

Re: Doctor Who (S8E08) -- “Mummy on the Orient Express” -- 10/11/14

I liked the episode overall, but it had a few issues. I'm enjoying what they are doing with the new Doctor overall, and Clara finally confronting him on his callousness in this episode. I really liked his "Would you like to think that about me?" line. Ultimately I think the writers are limited in how far they can take this though. I just don't think the BCC will let them make the character too unlikeable.

I do wish they had left out the scene with the engineer at the end. It would have kept the idea that he really wasn't joking about only saving Clara a very plausible possibility. I didn't really like the way they just cut to Clara waking up, but it would be worth if they left what really happened a bit more of a mystery.

As for the issues, overall the pacing was just off. The story just didn't seem to flow well. It felt like there was a lot of material left on the editing room floor, or perhaps this was an existing script that was trimmed to include more of the Doctor/Clara developments.

Also, I thought it was funny when the air was removed from the car at the end the other people on the train started asphyxiating immediately but Clara and the Doctor were still having a normal conversation. I just imagined the director giving the dying actors directions from behind camera like a Ed Wood movie.

And finally, Clara lying to Danny, and then the Doctor, just seemed like something they had her do to set up drama in the future.

Doctor Who (S8E09) -- "Flatline" -- 10/18/14

Separated from the Doctor, Clara discovers a new menace from another dimension. But how do you hide when even the walls are no protection? With people to save and the Doctor trapped, Clara comes up against an enemy that exists beyond human perception.

Weird and interesting episode. Coleman shines once again. Nice moments with the mini-TARDIS, especially the scenes with the Doctor's hand in Clara's purse and the TARDIS hermit crab on the tracks.

I enjoyed this episode a lot. But I like Clara -- I should check with my Clara-hating friend to see what he thought of the episode.

Also, here's a thought -- I bet you could get a good episode out of the Tardis materializing inside itself. And by "you," I mean someone like Jamie Mathieson, who wrote last week's Mummy episode and this week's as well.

I really enjoy this episode. The Doctor is still FAR too rude and grumpy though.

Re: Doctor Who (S8E09) -- "Flatline" -- 10/18/14

I agree, was pretty good. I especially liked how Clara figured out to fix the Tardis. If it were 10 or 11 they'd be bouncing off the walls telling Clara how brilliant she is.

So, pretty sick of this entire Mitsy storyline at this point. Entirely handled poorly. The writers need to take some notes from Joss Whedon and Co. on how you build a mystery character. Why is she suddenly acting like she's aware of Clara. If they retcon Clara' s history with this plot I'll be well annoyed.

I enjoyed the episode overall. A very strong episode for Clara. Didn't enjoy the plot/monster so much. The scene in the room with the hanging chair was good, but my favorite moment was Clara's bit with the hairband on the train.
