Saturday Night Live adds new cast members and first Asian Cast Member for Season 45
Wow wonder how they could go decades without anyone of Asian descent on the show?
Chloe Fineman kind of looks like Abbie Elliot. Hope she has a longer run than Abbie

Meet Saturday Night Live’s new cast additions for its upcoming 45th season. Chloe Fineman, Shane Gillis and Bowen Yang have been tapped as new featured players on NBC’s venerable late-night sketch comedy program.Yang joined SNL as a staff writer last season and is co-host of the Las Culturistas podcast.
The promotion of Yang, son of Chinese immigrants, marks a milestone for representation on the program where he will be the first full-time East Asian cast member. (SNL alum Fred Armisen is a quarter Japanese, and fellow former SNL-er. Rob Schneider is a quarter Filipino.)The deficiency, which led to SNL production designer Akira Yoshimura being recruited to play Asian Star Trek character Sulu in a 2017 Star Trek skit featuring Chris Pine, was addressed on the show by then-new cast member Melissa Villaseñor in a sketch about the 2016 Vice-Presidential debate. “Hello, I’m the new Hispanic cast member,” she said in the skit, “and I’ll be playing Asian moderator Elaine Quijano. Because baby steps.”
Fineman was a New Face at the 2018 Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal and has been a regular performer at the Groundlings.
Gillis was recently recognized as a New Face at the 2019 Just for Laughs Festival.
The cast additions follow the news that SNL mainstay Leslie Jones is leaving after five seasons. Fineman, Gillis and Yang will join returning veteran SNL cast members Kate McKinnon, who is returning for an eighth season, along with the rest of the troupe, led by McKinnon and fellow veterans Kenan Thompson, Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong.Season 45 of SNL premieres on September 28 with Woody Harrelson, in his fourth appearance as host, and musical guest Billie Eilish.

I guess two new cast members or somebody else to replace this guy.
I know people are over sensitive these days but these guys seem mean spirited.

Saturday Night Live must have a terrible vetting process. He's a Philadelphia comedian who has been banned from comedy clubs there for racist and homophobic language. And it's not like the internet is pulling stuff from 10+ years ago most of this information is from within the last year.

j/k. Obviously they are a minority but it's not like they're a unicorn or anything... I had never realized that either. The fact they had to get a production designer just to have someone to play Sulu is interesting.

He would look at you with a blank stare, like WTF are you talking about? Because he's thinking, "Who are all these non-white American political and cultural figures that you are envisioning being portrayed on the show?"
And you say, "Pretty soon you're going to do a Star Trek sketch, and you'll need a Sulu! And then 40 years from now, you'll do another Star Trek sketch, and you'll need a Sulu AGAIN!"
And Lorne would say, "I think we'll muddle through."
Now at the same time, there's a bit of self-fulfilling prophecy. If you fill your cast with white actors, then you give your writers permission to ignore minorities under the guise of practicality, and diverse voices and POVs never get represented on your "topical" show. You hire Chris Rock to be in your cast, but then no one can think of anything for him to do except occasionally play a rapper.
Just like Friends presented a homogeneous white version of NYC that was incredibly popular with white viewers, for most of its history, SNL (except in the early 80s) was, and was content to be a white sketch comedy show made for white viewers.

This might be the boom era of Asian and Indian comics and there is a lot of talent you can put on SNL.

Andrew Yang forgives Shane Gillis
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/andr...161407131.html
Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang is responding to Shane Gillis, one of three new featured players on "Saturday Night Live," after a 2018 video resurfaced of him using a racial slur.In a clip from an episode of his "Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast," Gillis made derogatory remarks about Asians while chatting with comedian co-host Matt McCusker."Chinatown’s (expletive) nuts," Gillis said. "Let the (expletive) live there," he added, using a racial slur.Page Six and Vice also report Gillis used the slur in reference to Yang, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate of East Asian descent, in a May episode of "Real A-- Podcast."
The video of the episode has since been taken down. Gillis issued an apology for the remarks on Thursday."I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss," he wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. "I’m happy to apologize to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said." On Saturday, Yang shared Gillis' apology on his Twitter account along with a message."Shane - I prefer comedy that makes people think and doesn’t take cheap shots. But I’m happy to sit down and talk with you if you’d like," Yang wrote.
In a follow-up tweet, Yang clarified that he doesn't think the comedian should be fired from his new gig with "SNL.""For the record, I do not think he should lose his job," he tweeted. "We would benefit from being more forgiving rather than punitive. We are all human."

I feel strongly that comedians should be allowed to push boundaries and feel for them in this overly-PC environment. Comedians should be allowed to explore humor even if it goes to uncomfortable places sometimes. They really shouldn't have to apologize for their material. That said, slurs and "funny" accents isn't comedy and shouldn't be afforded the same protections as jokes and stand-up routines.

Good news, his replacement has already been found:
(I hope showing the crowd's reaction indicates how this type of joke is offensive)

I'm not big on cancel culture, but that was the right move. Guy is at least tone-deaf and probably an asshole.

Kate McKinnon is funny
Probably too late to find a replacement when the first episode of the new season is 13 days away.

Had Gillis not been so flippant about things when it came up, he might have kept his job. This is how NOT to publicly respond in 2019, folks - regardless of if he was right or wrong about it.
