Maybe, but I hope his fate is not determined until we are pretty close to the end of the season.

I think the water comment was too obvious and while that might have something to do with what could have caused psychotic episodes that may have had an entire stations crew trek outside to end up dead and buried in the snow, there has to be something else going on. That being said, I guess mentioning the water is like Chekhov's gun, in that at one point during the season the gun has to be fired, so to speak.

One thing I appreciate about this series is that you really do not have to have seen past seasons to jump right into this season and enjoy it.

The whole stepdaughter (?) thing is a bit annoying. Are they implying she committed sexual assault and child porn? I guess I am not sure how old she is supposed to be.

The girl in question is16 that does not mean she can be filmed having sex with her.

Not sure where they are tying to go with this other than her being let off.

This one didn't grab me, but I kept it on the DVR and plan to rewatch. Looks like one of those shows you gotta give 100% attention to, and to be honest I checked my phone a couple of times during the viewing. I'm also a little all-over-the-place with shows, having just finished The Curse and starting up Only Murders in the Building, not sure I have the attention span at the moment to drop into another world.

I think it just is intended to show that this officer has a complicated family life and her troubled daughter is hurting her authority as a police officer in this tiny tight-knit community-- which is the exact same situation that Kate Winslet's character faced in Mare of Easttown.

I highly recommend this hour long podcast which is a critical discussion of Episode 1 and then an interesting interview with Issa Lopez, the shows creator.

I didn’t quite follow the part with a girl who had a tattoo on her face with lines on her chin.
I thought she was shown as someone who was murdered but also was there a scene with the Police officer going to see that girl?

First episode was decent. I'll stick around to see where it goes.

Been a long time since I played a movie from disc, but can you play a 2.5 minute snippet of the movie/disc (ie. Ferris Bueller Twist and Shout scene) on repeat?

Honestly, I'm sick of the family drama they keep giving detectives in so many shows. It always takes away from the main plot of the shows. They can't just have a regular functioning family and have to force some side story on us?

There are only 5 more episodes. It's not the typical 8 to 10 episode HBO season.

I'm not a writer or TV executive. They get paid way more than me. But, I believe the thinking is that "Happy" families don't make good TV. Especially for a murder mystery that takes place in the cold and dark.

When was the last time you saw a dark serialized murder mystery with protagonists in a happy family or happy relationship? They are likely very rare.

And I think there's more to this relationship, like the girl is actually her step-daughter or something. Just like how it was more complicated for Mare than it originally seemed. Some deep-seeded family tragedy or something.
The podcast talked at length about how there's a lot in this story that isn't explained, that the characters all have a history with each other but the viewer isn't given all the information. I do like that. No big exposition dump. We'll figure it out eventually.

Well, yeah... that's my point. It's used too often that it's generally a formula now.
And a happy family may not make good TV, but no one says we need to spend much time with them. Simply showing the family from time to time is enough just to show that the detective has a family - but cut out the drama... and the vast majority of the time should be spent on the case.

It sounded like she was in a relationship (married?) with the girls father and he died from the result of a DUI (either his own DUI or someone else's).... and Danvers feels obligated to look after the kid even though she could've just bailed.

Same here really tired of it. So much so that I will skip The Mare of Easttown. I had planned to start that.

I remember putting a snippet of the Saturn V launch on the Apollo 13 DVD on repeat to test my subwoofer. Probably depended on your player.

I'm so in on this show as I'm a sucker for anything set in the Arctic or Antarctic.

I made a similar comment to my wife while we were watching the episode. I would think the disc would have eventually timed out.

Yeah, and it also glitches when the delivery guy shows up due to a power issue - but it reacts almost like it's a reception problem (ie. antenna). Even a slight power issue should cause the player to stop playing.

It's a really weird scene. We can hear the Ferris scene's already playing on a loop before they disappear, and the guy comes back to the couch with popcorn and continues to watch it. No remote seen (later mentioned that the remote couldn't be found) and he's not reaching for it... just plops down and continues to watch on a loop since we continue to hear it in the background. Who watches a movie (or anything) like that?

I'm over-analyzing, but surely they could've done something that made more sense.

Re: True Detective: Night Country (S4E01) -- Season Premieres -- "Part 1" -- 1/14/24

I had an LG DVD player that allowed you to repeat an a-b section. I only know that because I still have the remote, and use it with another LG player that I use for all region playback.

You guys do realize that her deputy (is that his title?) is John Hawkes, well known as being the store merchant and buddy to Seth Bullock in Deadwood, right?

What puzzled me was that Foster's character had to 'sneakily' get the records that were stored at his house. They're official records, so should be available on request, or presumably since the flood (?) has passed, they should be returned to the station. Did I miss something, there? I think I'll rewatch this episode.

Anyone else bothered by the lazy and obvious error in the first few seconds of the season? Last sunset of the year on December 17? Anyone? Bueller?

How was that an obvious error?
The whole point is that this fictional town is without sun for weeks. That's the case with several real Northern Alaskan towns like in this Tweet from Fairbanks, dated November 18.
Oh because it's too close to the Winter Solstice? Okay, but who cares? They wanted to set it right before Christmas and shortly after the last sunset. Shrug emoji is spot on.

It was a focal and integral point to the setting and plot of the show, such that it was literally the first moments of it and first piece of information shared with the viewer. And it was a stupid and lazy error. Just say something less specific or leave it off altogether if you have no idea what you are talking about. Instead they clowned themselves in the opening seconds.

Don't watch Silver Bullet or read Cycle of the Werewolf, Stephen King's book it's based on! You'll go mad.

Still, you'd think get Neil deGrasse Tyson on the horn and do a quick consult with him.

Okay, maybe not quick.

Re: True Detective: Night Country (S4E01) -- Season Premieres -- "Part 1" -- 1/14/24

I enjoyed the setting and love seeing Foster again. Though the first episode reminded me a LOT of "The Head", which is an HBO Asia series with a similar starting premise - research station in Antarctica where they show everyone to start and then someone shows up later and the station is abandoned with signs of violence. It is a much more straightforward murder mystery than this is but it is weirdly similar to start. Also "The Head" is great - there are two seasons of it and it's also on Max.

I haven't watched episode 2 yet but someone was running around in the station when the delivery driver showed up, right? I'm surprised we only got a quick glimpse of that. I figured it would come back again before the end of the episode.
