And I thought DVDs held 4.7GB per layer? Meaning a total of 9.4GB.

Interesting article on CNN about the possibility of Microsoft licensing the Xbox software, much like they do with Windows.

MS already shot this down for the most part, it won't be happening for at least a couple years, if ever:
Yesterday, the next-gen console race took an unexpected twist, when an article in Japanese business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun was picked up by many media outlets, including the Associated Press.
The article reported Bill Gates, who was visiting Japan, as hinting that Microsoft might adapt its mega-successful PC business model to the next-gen console race. The paper quoted the Microsoft chairman and chief software architect as saying his company was open to the idea of licensing the Xbox 360's operating system to third-party hardware manufacturers, as it does with Windows and PCs. Gates reportedly said such a business strategy is being discussed within Microsoft, and that the idea is at a preliminary stage.
Gates' comments were reportedly in response to queries about third-party premium-end game machines with functionalities beyond the standard Xbox 360 specifications. However, rumors began to quickly spread that Microsoft was considering letting outside parties make their own game consoles that would run the Xbox 360 OS, perhaps as soon as the platform's launch later this year.
However, speaking to GameSpot, Microsoft officials flatly denied that the Xbox 360 would carry any other label than Microsoft's--or at least any time soon. "To be clear, Xbox will continue to be manufactured exclusively by Microsoft," said a rep for the company. "There's certainly a potential for other hardware companies to manufacture Xbox some day in the future, but that is not something we're focused on right now."
Of course, at the current time, there would be little incentive for an external manufacturer to make an Xbox 360. While Microsoft has released no official manufacturing costs--or even a price--for the console, it is widely believed that the company is heavily marking down each unit. Some analysts predict that the company will lose around $75 for each 360 sold, losing $91.2 million and $243.2 million in hardware production in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

It will be sold out for the first couple weeks, then you'll be able to find them fairly easy, and then they'll be tough to find right before and right after X-mas more than likely.

If any retailer (online or bricks and mortar) is taking pre-orders, they are doing so by guessing their initial unit allocation. Most of the time, retailers grossly overestimate what they think they'll get, and then begin to panic once MS, Sony or Nintendo gives them the REAL numbers.
But, traditionally, the game companies rarely make enough units for launch to even remotely keep up with demand. A holiday launch makes things even more sketchy since you have added Xmas demand on top of rabid fans waiting for their first shot at the next gen. I guess the only real advice here is to pre-order if you really want to have it right away and/or before Xmas. If you don't, you'll be rolling the dice.

Question - any more news as to what is going to be backward compatible? From what I have heard, it's going to be almost all of the mainstream titles, including all Live titles (Halo 2 and Ghost Recon 2 - yeah!). Only the most obscure stuff will be left out. If true, this will be great news for the new 360.

It will all be done via software emulation packages, which will most likely have to be custom tailored to each game. The 360 will come with the most popular games emulation packages prepacked on the hard drive - I'd guess between 10 and 20 games. The rest will be downloadable via LIve.
This brings up an interesting situation. Since only 10-15% of all Xbox owners have their machines connected to an Internet connection, how with the ramaining owners receive the packages? Will Microsoft issue discs quarterly to registered 360 owners?

I would doubt it. They'll probably just let themselves off the hook because they'll be available on the Silver version of live, meaning anyone with an internet connection and/or a little tech savviness should be able to get them. The people who don't fall in this category will be out of luck, but they probably wouldn't know about or need full backwards compatibility.

Are you saying the color black (instead of white) is "kiddy like"?

As Josh pointed out, I was just joking. Whenever Nintendo introduces variable color choices some people on here like to lable that "kiddy". God forbid people have a choice. ![Wink](/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Here's the picture of the dev kit (Notice the extra air vents.) I was refering to:

Personally, I would love to see a black 360 in addition of the white one.

That's a funny thing about swappable face plates...you still have the other 80% or so of the console that's still in the original color and the controller too.
I'm sure some will have their 360 horizontally oriented into a HT system that way you won't even see too much of the sides or top.
