You don't have to only counter....you get a lot of moves...it is all about attacking different kind of enemies differently..I got into the trap early of just standing there and countering, but once I opened up a bit, I now only counter if I am being attacked from behind...I feel like a Bruce and Chuck baby...
What do you mean attack differently? There is only one attack button, a block button, and a counter button. Not sure how to attack differently on different guys.

Re: Sleeping Dogs (Formerly True Crime: Hong Kong) -- Coming August 14th

If they are not a big guy, you can run into them and tackle them getting a few hits...go at the next guy, does not matter if he is big, and do a one two quick press combo on anyone followed by a hold X to heavy hit. During this be ready to counter, but don't wait...then you can lock on to anyone and hold B to run up their body to do a smashing elbow...then lock on to the next person and tap A to flip over their body and no matter what power they have, you will be able to get a hit in. At this point you should have fully charged your face so you can go to town. You can also mix in a hold and leg break on anyone but big guys. Really the combat system is amazing...I might only use counter once or twice in a fight because I am always moving around. If it is a big guy I avoid him until I am fully charged, but even they are not that bad, and will get hurt if you mix in your light and heavy attacks, or flip behind them. Everyone else gets crushed with flying kicks or leg breaks...

Do you learn all these new moves somewhere? I don't remember them saying anything about flipping over people or even a power meter of sorts on the fighting help at the beginning. I am not far in, but do you learn all this somewhere else?

go to your upgrade tree...there is one that is called Melee ....you unlock these by finding jade statues in the game and then going to the martial arts club.

oh crap, i didn't know that. I haven't found any jade statues

Maybe I'll be able to fight better after i find some of those lol

Well from looking at a walkthrough it appears I haven't even gotten to one yet as the first 2 are at popstar number 3 and the vip room at the bam bam club, both missions I'm on now.

yeah if you see my earlier post...I was a little let down by the combat at first...thinking it was a poor version of Batman...it is still not as good as Batman, but I love it now I actually have some moves...

Re: Sleeping Dogs (Formerly True Crime: Hong Kong) -- Coming August 14th

one thing I found is that the enemies don't step out of their invisible boundaries, but you sometimes can. I was doing the club and they wouldn't step past the main room when i got downstairs. So I just grappled them one by one (except the knife guy of course) and beat the hell out of them 1 by 1 in the karaoke room. They don't even fight back, they just try to run back to their leash point.

I actually jumped over the bar in the middle and jumped over and back and made attacks on them. It still took me about ten retries as that big guy in the bathroom would finish me off before I could get him. Then it starts you all the way back with the two bouncers on the top level. Frustrating as hell to say the least. I can whip ass until they throw those big dudes in and so far I suck at fighting them.

Re: Sleeping Dogs (Formerly True Crime: Hong Kong) -- Coming August 14th

The island is divided into four fictional districts which are named after some real-life neighborhoods. [14] Although Kowloon and other towns, villages, and islands of the Hong Kong region will not be featured in the game, portions of the in-game North Point district will be based on certain neighborhoods of Kowloon. A fictional Lamma Island will also be featured in the game, according to the in-game map screen shown in recent demos.
That is extremely disappointing.

Just took a look at the map. Not sure why they bothered to call this Hong Kong if it's not set in Hong Kong.

well it is a rpg game...so you have to like action RPG games, but yeah it is fantastic. Very challenging at first, until you get the hang of combat...

I bought the red envelopes DLC pack but am a bit disappointed with it. I thought it would be fun having more stuff hidden around the city but once you find the second envelope you know exactly where to find all the others. It might as well just give you the money right away.

Re: Sleeping Dogs (Formerly True Crime: Hong Kong) -- Coming August 14th

so all I had left to get 1000/1000 achievements is win 2 million in gambling...now it is not total winnings, but winnings minus losses, so everyone of course figured out you save before a bet and then if you lose reload....simply enough right?

Well first, the place you gamble is a good 2 minutes of game time away from where you load after a save...

Still you can bet 100,000 per cock-fight at one location, so still easy right? It is random on if your bird will win or lose...people are saying though that if you bet on the bird with the best record, you win 80% of the time..

Ok...so after 1 hour of fucking with this I gave up. 22 losses in a row...I even started just playing over and over to see if the game was glitched..I tried different locations...I tried older save....22...I am either the unluckiest mother fucker of all time, or my game is glitched or something...

I finished as well, a few hours more than you.

Missed quite a few achievements though. Didn't get all the events, find all the shrines, or all of the lock boxes, didn't kill an enemy with a fish, or get the 30 silver and 60 gold stars or whatever, didn't get to Triad level 10 (was at 9), there was also one secret one I missed.

Might have been more but I was at 650/1000. Not gonna do anymore just gonna trade this in. It was a fun ride.

I found that betting on the white bird usually works best, whether he's favored or not. I won 4 of 5 fights like this.

Re: Sleeping Dogs (Formerly True Crime: Hong Kong) -- Coming August 14th

So far it is a very fun game but the designers cheated somewhat by having huge portions of the map fenced off or with invisible barriers to keep you out. Also, one thing that bothers me a bit is after you make a drug dealer bust via your tv set the police officer says, "We got them! We got them!" despite only having arrested one person. It just sounds downright silly.

I had a bigger problem with the fact that it is the same voice used in Just Cause 2..and it distracts me when he talks...lol

I ended up with my full 1000...for some reason when I went back I won 10 times in a row...and it was only 1 million not 2 million...

Re: Sleeping Dogs (Formerly True Crime: Hong Kong) -- Coming August 14th

There were a couple of races that really pissed me off. I especially hated the one bike race where you started at the cemetery. There were three different times that I was winning the race and speeding straight ahead to the finish line to only have someone blaze past me out of nowhere to win it at the very last second.

yeah the races are garbage...I hate rubber band racing, and it seemed to be pure luck at times when you won, but it never took more than 3 tries for me...and I do think some of the vehicles you can buy are better than others...

I swear one race I was full speed at least 20 or so meters ahead going toward the finish line when two cars just sped past me at near 400 miles per hour to take the win..

I'm sure there is still illegal gambling in Hong Kong, but all the real gambling happens in Macau anyway. Is that part of the game?
