I was just reading an article talking about the slowness. Maybe a combo of slow CPU and buggy OS.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

The CPU isn't THAT slow, it's got to be the OS itself. Unless streaming to the gamepad is straining the system's resources, but that doesn't make much sense as games are running fine without any problem.

And it doesn't have any slowdown once it's loaded any given part of the system. It's only when navigating between parts of the system.

I don't know, I didn't get one yet. This article talks about the CPU though.

Yeah, that article's been floating around. I want more details before I agree with that particular assessment of the CPU.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I tried out the pro controller with Assassin's Creed. That is probably what I will use to play it from now on. I noticed that the gamepad remained on and was mirroring AC, even though I wasn't using it. Is there a way to manually shut off the gamepad if I'm not using it? And I don't mean just the screen, which I can do from the home menu.

The pro controller shut itself off pretty quickly after a period of no use.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I just discovered a neat little feature of the gamepad. I just went to install Amazon Prime video (working great btw, streaming Christmas Vacation now just to test it), and it of course has to be registered at Amazon to use the Prime features. Instead of going to my PC or something to go to the amazon.com/mytv site to enter the code that popped up on the screen, I decided to hit the home button, and go to the site on the gamepad. I got there, but couldn't remember the code it said to type in. About that time my little Mii in the lower left hand corner popped up saying that if I press the X button it would pop up a screenshot of what my Wii U shows from the Amazon Prime screen. So while on the internet on my gamepad, when I hit that button on my TV popped up the screen with the code I needed to type in. I did so, went back to the Amazon Prime app on the gamepad, and it worked just fine. I know, basic stuff, but I thought it was neat.

I was playing NSMBU and trying to collect the star coins i missed. Get the last one of world 1. I quit my game thinking the game saves your progress after finishing a level or collecting a star coin. I go back to my game and all my progress was lost! Nintendo

Hasn't it been like that in all of the NSMB games? It saves after every fortress/castle, and you can "quick save" at any point you want to, but you can only restart from that from that point once, so you have to remember to quick save.

Okay, so I think I found a workaround that lets you turn off the gamepad without turning off the system. When the system is navigating from one point to another (like from the menu to Netflix, or from a game back to the menu), and you see the logo sitting there doing nothing while the system does who knows what, if you hold down power on the gamepad, it turns off the pad, but not the system. You can then turn on a pro controller or wiimote or whatever your preferred input is. So that's good.

Also, I tried to plug in a self-powered WD 1 TB HDD. Didn't recognize it. Didn't even give me the option to format it. Plugged in a desktop HDD with a wall plug, turned the system back on, and it recognized it and allowed me to format it. So now I have 465 GB instead of a TB. I looked into it, apparently Nintendo isn't saying it will support all self-powered drives, because they may draw more power than USB 2.0 can provide, which I think is bogus since this drive works fine on the USB 2.0 ports on my computer.

What are you using the external drive for anyway? I certainly see little reason to even bother with it until my current 32GB fills up...which I can't foresee happening as I won't buy Wii U games digitally. The 20GB with my launch Xbox 360 was fine for years.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Companies tend to give out download codes these days instead of physical copies for reviews. Also I only have an 8 GB system. These were hard drives I wasn't using for anything specific anyway, so it's no skin off my nose to use one as a dedicated HDD for the Wii U.

Ahh ok. Makes sense for you. I'm seeing more of these posts from regular folks. Seems weird when There is nothing you can do with extra space (can't play music, movies etc). Maybe when they launch GameCube games I'd probably care.

Why didn't you get a 32GB? Just the extras are worth it!

My minor buyers remorse has subsided, second screen completely won me over.

Didn't want Nintendoland, saw no use for the cradle and stand. Figured I wouldn't be making enough purchases online for the discount to be useful. Didn't need the extra space because I was already planning on plugging an external hard drive in. On a superficial level, I heard the black consoles and controllers were dust and fingerprint magnets.

Also I didn't pre-order so when Walmart was offering 8 GB consoles online I took all the above into account and ordered.

It sounds like their USB ports don't put out a lot of power. On my netbook, I can plug in an external HDD with no other power source, as long as the netbook is plugged into a wall outlet. If it's on battery power and I connect the drive to the same USB port, it will not work because (apparently) less power is going to the ports. I think it may also depend on the drive, as some have higher power requirements than others.

Another thing you could try is to get a y-cable with 2 connectors so that the drive can draw power from 2 ports.

The Wii U manual mentioned getting a y-cable, so that would probably work, but I'm fine with the hard drive I attached to it.

I've got my Wii U connected via HDMI and it's got horribly crushed blacks and clipped whites. Same setup and settings as my PS3 and 360, which are both fine. It's every game and even Netflix. Any ideas what is causing it?

Did you try using a different HDMI cable?

Nintendoland is fucked. I've tried to play it a half dozen times and it keeps locking up the system and emitting an audible buzz. Mario seems to work fine.

*edit - appears I'm not the only one and speculation is that it's the title update fucking it up. Great job Nintendo.

Is there a setting on the console for video levels? It would be like the PS3's setting for "limited" vs "full" for RGB.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Finally got my Wii U setup and it's freezing consistently. Unplayable.

I read online that one potential fix is to turn the language settings to English Only within NintendoLand. However, I can't find the options menu in NintendoLand. When I look at the NintendoLand manual, it shows the Options Menu in the lower left of the screen, but that button is not there on my gamepad. Can anybody direct me to where to find the options menu in the game?
