The Wii U is the #1 or #2 most requested gift this year, it's fine.

Setting mine up as well. Tried to do the trick where you don't accept the update and then it automatically downloads in the background, but I saw no indication of it doing that, so I manually told it to download the update.

Consumerist had a link to an article about it. iPad was the most sought after "toy" this Christmas among those 6-12 followed by the Wii U. It ranked 4th behind iPad, computer, and non iPad tablet among those surveyed older than 12.

Man, fuck Toys R Us. I asked for SMBU and ZombiU to do the B1G1, and they're out of ZombiU. I then try to use the 20% off coupon on the pro controller, they don't accept it for electronics. I ask them to see if one of the other stores has ZombiU in stock. The woman had no clue how to find it in the system. Turns out none of my local TRU stores have ZombiU in stock.
And apparently they don't even list it online.

I tried to get Skylanders Giants in the Buy 2 Get 1 40% off deal and for whatever reason it wasn't eligible. So not only are all the other console versions of Giants on sale for basically 1/3 less than the WiiU version, but it's not even eligible for the WiiU game sale. Went and picked up Scribblenauts at Target since for whatever reason they have it for 49.99 and that's around what I would have paid for it had there actually been another game I wanted at TRU.
Game pricing seems variable. Scribblenauts must have been previously listed at 49.99, because Amazon had it briefly for that price too. The Sega racing game, which I haven't seen yet, is 39.99, as are some other games that basically look like shovelware.
So when is Bayonetta 2 coming out again?

Man, updates of any kind are hilariously slow on this thing. They must have taken a page out of the PS3 playbook.

Even though I don't want one, I've committed to buy a black one when I find one in the wild. So far no luck, but everywhere I've gone has had at least one white unit in stock.

Remember in the last thread how it was said that Nintendo was actually losing money on this and I said that if they were, it wasn't much?
Also, it mentions the increased supply directly.

In a recent Mercury News interview with Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime we learned that it doesn't take much for the Wii U to be a profitable transaction. In fact, it only takes one game purchase.
Reggie was asked about how the Wii U being the first system to be sold at a loss would affect Nintendo's business plan. Not by much, it seems.
"The business model doesn't change dramatically, in that as soon as we get the consumer to buy one piece of software, then that entire transaction becomes profit positive," said Fils-Aime.
"In the end, the business model is still to drive the install base of hardware, and then to drive a strong tie ratio with all of the other software and experiences for the consumer. And if we're able to do that, then we will create significant profit for the company."
If this is the case, then the 2.4-to-1 attach rate we heard about last week means that Nintendo should be sitting pretty this year.
In an earlier question, Fils-Aime makes clear that Nintendo has ramped up production to address the supply problems they had during the Wii launch. He says that they're set to sell 5.5 million Wii U units this fiscal year.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo
I only got to play AC for an hour or so, but here are my initial impressions:
Graphics are gorgeous, can't imagine it looks better on the other consoles. Protip: Don't play this in 3D. It's headache-inducing and cuts down the framerate.
Sound is fantastic.
Using the gamepad felt pretty natural for the most part. I was surprised because I'm so used to traditional controllers. However, currently the game is only giving me a map on the gamepad screen, which would be fine except I have the exact same map on the HUD, meaning the gamepad is adding nothing. Additionally, when viewing cutscenes, the gamepad plays the exact same cutscene, and all I can think of is how the gamepad only has 3-5 hours of battery, so maybe they should try to preserve battery life by turning off the screen when it's not necessary. I guess it might be useful for going into the kitchen or something while the cutscene plays so you don't have to pause, but I should have the option to turn the screen off. I hear you can use the gamepad to mess with your inventory, which I can see being useful, but I don't have an inventory in the game yet, so I don't know.
I didn't pick up a pro controller yet because TRU was pissing me off, but unless the inventory system is super useful, I imagine I'll switch to the pro. I'm worried this might be the case for a lot of games not specifically designed for the Wii U.
As for the system itself:
The OS is absurdly slow to load things. Nintendo better fix that ASAP. I spent more time looking at the loading screen than I did interacting with anything.
The gamepad is cool, but the resolution on the screen is too low in a world where my phone can run movies in 720p and up. I was running the Netflix app (which is not as well-designed as the PS3 version), and when I popped the feed down to my gamepad, the lower resolution was immediately obvious. I'd honestly rather watch Netflix on my Vita.
Hulu, on the other hand, made great use of the gamepad, and I could certainly see myself using the Wii U as my main Hulu Plus player. And the fact that I can pop the stream between the TV and the gamepad with a single touch and not a single hiccup in the stream is impressive.
As for the rest of the system, the GUI feels decidedly kiddie to me. The whole thing lacks polish. The gamepad has a lot of technology crammed into it, but still feels cheap. I'm not saying it's a bad system. I like a lot of the ideas floating around in it. But the implementation needs to match the ideas. And right now, I'm not feeling that's the case.
Does anyone know what format hard drives have to be for use with the Wii U? I'm planning on plugging in a spare 1 TB drive to one of the rear USB ports.

Yeah, the price on this isn't an issue, it's the lack of software (for now) and it's questionable future, in that it might turn out like the Wii.

Everyone can add me as well: flipperbaby.
Played a few levels in NSMBU. Mario has never looked better.
Picked up ZombieU and Darksiders II at TRU today. Can't wait to dive in.

Flipperbaby.
Awesome.
"Well, there have been a few more flipper babies, yes."
I'll add back anyone who adds me when I get home tonight.

Seihaku83 on Miiverse or whatever it is here
That said my initial impressions:
1) It seemed like there were a surprisingly large number of parts on this thing, weird comment I know but it was noticeable right off the bat.
2) The setup / firmware update process took exceedingly long
3) Menus are exceptionally slow
4) Everything about the system seems poorly optimized right now, slow load times, slow menus, slow netflix
5) Super Mario Bros Wii U is kind of disappointing so far, it isn't bad, and I don't know exactly what I was expecting but it just hasn't gripped me like I had hoped, it feels a little off - like a game paying homage to Mario instead of being a real Mario itself.
6) The second screen is bad ass, touch response is great and range seems to be pretty solid (System is downstairs and working fine on the gamepad upstairs)
7) The whole thing feels rushed, I hope Nintendo gets its act together.
As it stands I have minor buyers remorse so far, I think the thing has great potential but this launch kind of sucks. Right now the biggest strength is the system feels like a Nintendo DS 2. I sincerely hope they capitalize on that properly, it was a bit disheartening to see Scribblenauts as a $60 game, it's cool but it's not on the same level as a lot of full games.
How is that Sonic kart racer? Saw it was only $40 and the reviews have been solid.
