For games that aren't optimized for the Gamepad I prefer the pro controller.

The triggers for acceleration/breaks are just buttons that have two modes; on & off. You can't accelerate or break just a little like you can with the 360 or PS3 controllers. Also, the sticks are crap. They have a very narrow range of movement, so you over-steer by moving them a little and they're convex instead of concave, so it's not particularly ergonomic to your thumb resting on it, and they're just a little too stout as well. And with my middle finger resting under the controller, against the barrier behind the triggers, it starts to wear on my finger and rub it raw, not unlike writing with an uncomfortable pencil for a long time.

Also, who's ever idea it was to make the controller shiny and a horrible magnet for finger-stains, needs to drive around to Wii U owner's home and polish each person's controller to understand what a retarded mistake he made.

Seriously, people saying that the gamepad/tablet is comfortable and not-cumbersome are speaking a different language to me, because it is easily the most cumbersome controller I've ever had to use. And I don't mean just for the racing games, but the Marios as well - I'm glad those give me the option to use the Wii wand instead.

Also, the battery life is shit - feels like I get barely 2 hours out of a single charge, and playing while it's plugged in is just more burdensome.

So, to sum up; shitty controller, but I'm still enjoying the few games I've played.
I've used the gamepad to play through every single Wii U game I own (except for Pikmin 3) and it's worked great for all of them. I also get on average 5 hours of battery life out of it so you might have something wrong with yours.

Yeah 5-6 hours is the norm for me too. Might want to double check the brightness setting slop.

Simple question that may have been asked a dozen times (if so, apologies):

Are most WiiU games playable on the pro-controller?

I only ask because I don't want to ever use that tablet thing, but I want to play Nintendo games.

Oh, turning down it's brightness was the first thing I did soon as I figured out how to do so.

Maybe it just feels like I'm getting 2 hours out of a charge instead of 5. But then I know for a fact that the Wii controller drained battery even while off, so maybe this does that too?

The gamepad only lasts 2-3 hours for me as well. I really want a reliable replacement battery!!!

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I've yet to even see a low battery light. I play for a couple of hours one day, a couple of hours the next day, then set the gamepad on the charging cradle. I suppose one of these days I'll just keep playing until it dies to see how long the battery lasts, but I'm getting at least four hours of gaming on a single charge without seeing a low battery light. I keep the brightness on the middle setting. Did mine come with a super battery or something?

Have you actually played with the Gamepad yet? It's comfortable in the hand and some games make great use of it. Don't write it off just because it's different.

If it is the Nyko, when did you buy it? I remember there being tons of problems with them when they were first released. How long does it last for you?

Just checked Amazon, no longer there, none on eBay, etc... either.

Yeah, but some people here were complaining about only getting two or three hours. I was starting to feel like the odd one out because I was actually getting the battery life that Nintendo advertised.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Since the deal was live on Best Buy's site I went for the console, so here's our Wii U haul that'll be under the tree (spent under $600 total).

Am I missing anything?
  • Nintendo Wii U 32GB Console Deluxe Set, Mario Wii Remote Plus & NintendoLand Best Buy
  • Just Dance 2014 Groupon
  • Just Dance 2014 Kids Groupon
  • Wii U Party w/ Wiimote TRU
  • Super Mario 3D World TRU
  • Rayman Legends Amazon
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Amazon
  • Skylanders Swap Force Starter Pack Walmart

Merry Christmas to us.

I've got five kids ages from 4 to 15... and they have a blast with the dance games (and besides, the Groupon was for both for $45, so I can't complain too much).

Amazon listed Scribblenauts Unmasked as a lightning deal but didn't follow through. They dropped the price to $40, but I was really hoping for a $25 price match for Wal-mart.

One Target must have had 30 Mario & Luigi bundles, while another had no Wii U systems whatsoever. No Zelda though. Oh well.

I guess at this point I'm just going to wait and either hope for a deal before Christmas or hold out until early next year.

The two Targets I went to last night had zero Wii U to be found anywhere, I was shocked.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I'm starting to think that the Wii U will go down in history as another Dreamcast, a system that a lot of people praise but refuse to buy. And the people who are criticizing it now are going to be writing nostalgic essays in a decade about how wonderful it was, crying about how it never got the attention it deserved.

Too bad, because I'm enjoying the hell out of mine.

I'd probably put Unlimited back on the shelf too, but I'm a comic book nerd and want to get Unmasked for all that DC superhero geekiness. (Unlimited was $15; Unmasked was $25.)

I think the GameCube was Nintendo's Dreamcast. People are having revisionist thinking now with some of the titles.

The Wii U is what it is, for now. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo can right the ship. It really can't hold its own going against hardcore gamers, but if they crap out enough quality first-party titles it should be a must-own if you appreciate Nintendo's games.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Okay, so the controller's battery definitely drains while it's off.

I last used it two days ago, but I made sure to notice that the batter indicator was full when I last turned it off. Used it today, and the battery indicator was down 3 "bars". Such bullshit.
