Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

There are predictions going around that the Wii U will only come in at 150K units sold in November. Even if the number is wildly off and they actually did twice that, it's still horrible.

This is frighteningly awful...

The Wii dev unit was the same green color, at least the front panel.

So what's with the eshop being down all night? Thought I'd finally pick up and give the Pikmin DLC a spin. Bummer.

Cue doom and gloom theories.

Not shocking when you release a last gen console in a next gen world and the core gimmick isn't enough to overcome that hump.

Also, the library still isn't where it needs to be. Two games (A 10 year old Zelda game and a new Mario game) in a four month period doesn't make a Holiday release schedule.

They are doing maintenance tonight. It ends at 11pm est I believe. Something big(ish) is supposed to change after it's all done...

Monday night, after the maintenance, will be exciting for 3DS owners. I'm not allowed to say why, but I'm sure you can figure it out.

So, I guess I'm a little murky here, will this update allow for the ability to unify Wii U and 3DS in some way?

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Although I'm really happy with just about everything in my big stack of Wii U games thus far, do you think Nintendo's first party titles aren't very well-rounded?
http://www.dromble.com/2013/12/10/ni...sell-consoles/

That ties somewhat into another of Emily Rogers' articles where she says that Nintendo ought to invest in a sports-oriented studio:
http://www.dromble.com/2013/10/17/20...sports-studio/

I'd be all over that idea.

to the first article.

Not sure how going into sports would work with things like the NFL tied to Madden and/or Microsoft.

I want a new Wave Race and 1080. I'd also enjoy another Dr. Mario or Yoshi's Cookie.

EA's NFL exclusivity ends next year, although I think everyone the world over is just about 100% certain it'll be re-upped. I'd be into Nintendo-published sports titles just because I think they'd be more accessible and maybe arcade-y than the more sim-oriented sports titles out there now. Then again, maybe the reason I want Nintendo sports games is the reason hardly anyone else would be interested.

Not sure about Nintendo sports titles, but I'd be down for a rebirth of Blitz & Baseball Stars. I think those would mesh well with the WiiU audience.

Yeah, the only way Nintendo sports titles would work if they're more arcade style. Trying to put something realistic like Madden or NBA2K isn't going to attract that audience who's currently playing them on other console, and I think that audience has a lot of crossover with the Battlefield/Call of Duty/Halo types.

I'd love to see something like Baseball Stars (or something akin to the old Griffey Jr. Baseball). There's already a ton of Mario type sports games, I wonder if some sort of mix of Mario + real licenses would do anything.

Finally gave the new Pikmin DLC a spin. On the Christmas map I'm getting everything and knocking out the pizza boss when time runs out. Sooo close to the Platinum I can taste it.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

It looks like the Wii U numbers are coming in at just 220k for the month of November. Wow. The numbers below, saying that sales increased 340% since October isn't actually saying that much considering how few they sold in that month.

Nintendo Hardware Sales Increase by 100 Percent, Nintendo 3DS Surpasses 10 Million

Two games that are among the best reviewed of 2013 launched on Nov. 22: Super Mario 3D World for Wii U and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for Nintendo 3DS. The strong response to these games helped sales of Nintendo hardware systems in November increase by 100 percent over the month prior. This includes nearly 770,000 units of the Nintendo 3DS family, which drove the lifetime total past 10 million to nearly 10.5 million units. Other sales milestones achieved for the month include:

Nintendo 3DS Family of Systems

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y each sold more than 225,000 combined digital and physical units in their second month on the market. This brought the combined life-to-date total to more than 2.35 million units. On Dec. 4, Nintendo revealed special edition Pokémon X and Pokémon Y Nintendo 2DS bundles that should keep the games’ momentum going through the holidays and into 2014.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, the sixth Nintendo 3DS title to have a Metacritic score of 90 or higher, sold more than 280,000 combined digital and physical units. That figure jumps to more than 405,000 total units when including the special edition Zelda-themed Nintendo 3DS XL system, which comes with a code to download the game.

A handful of first-party Nintendo 3DS titles saw triple-digit sales percentage increases in November over sales in October. This includes standout 2013 titles such as Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (seventh month on market; 140 percent increase) and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (ninth month; 105 percent increase), and legacy titles such as Paper Mario: Sticker Star (13th month; 280 percent increase), Mario Kart 7 (23rd month; 130 percent increase) and Super Mario 3D Land (24th month; 235 percent increase).
Wii U

Sales of Wii U hardware increased by more than 340 percent over sales in October.

Super Mario 3D World for Wii U, currently the highest-rated next-generation title with a Metacritic score of 94, sold more than 215,000 combined digital and physical units in its first eight days on the market.

“This holiday season, Nintendo is offering an unparalleled combination of value and variety,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing. “In looking at these results, two things are indisputable: Our hardware is gaining momentum at the exact right time and our software catalog is stronger than ever.”

*Data regarding physical sales of games in November are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.
To put it into perspective...

[WII] Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo) {November 12, 2007} - 1,120,000
[WIU] Super Mario 3D World (Nintendo) {November 22, 2013} - 215,000

245K (Dreamcast, November 1999)
192K (Dreamcast, November 2000)
259K (Dreamcast, November 2001)

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

And that's with a new Mario game, which only sold 215K copies and wasn't in the top 10 games for the month.

Also for comparison, 3DS sold 770K and Xbox 360 sold 647K in November.

Yikes.

Looks like I'll get a Wii U right around E3 when they slash and burn the price!

That Mario didn't place in the top 10 sounds disappointing (and it is!), but not a single console exclusive is on that list. Not to sound like an apologist, but if the numbers floating around are correct, Killzone: Shadow Fall (~270K) is the only console exclusive to significantly outsell Mario, and it's neck and neck with Dead Rising 3 (~220K each). Compared to the other next-gen launch titles, Mario moved more copies than Forza 5 (~200K), Ryse (~185K), and Knack (~100K). I know it's not apples to apples since Mario is so much more of an established brand than those other exclusives, and the Wii U has twice as many consoles in North America as the Xbox One and PS4, but it sure does make things look at least a little less dismal. (Beats Mario & Sonic at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, at least -- only moved 25K copies in North America!)

I wonder if a different release date -- say, October -- would've made a difference. ...or if Nintendo would do crazy things like publicly acknowledging that they're releasing games outside of Nintendo Directs. Nintendo's refusal to market their products (and the abysmal work they do when they can be bothered) baffles me.

I don't know, I'm not sure if it's less dismal given that the game that was supposed to sell Wii U's didn't have a far higher attach rate. That's really odd to me that it isn't double that.

I think an earlier date might have been better too, getting people to look at the Wii U before others got caught in the XBox/PS4 hype in November so all the news about the other consoles didn't drown out the stellar reviews for Mario.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I'm skeptical there'll be a gamepad-less version, at least anytime soon. I don't think that's Plan A anyway. Something inarguably has to change, though, and if nothing else, hopefully this failure will finally light a fire under someone's ass. Nintendo's brand management and marketing are fundamentally broken. Doesn't matter how wonderful your games are if you're not capable of selling them.

Good Lord. I get that Wii U isn't the console people turn to for FPSes, but this is the split for Call of Duty: Ghosts:

XBO - 6.42%
PS4 - 7.39%
360 - 55.45%
PS3 - 30.42%
Wii U - 0.33%

The Wii U isn't even a rounding error. (FWIW, I got Black Ops 2 for the Wii U last year and loved it on that platform. I'm not a multiplayer and generally not a DLC guy, so those shortcomings didn't bother me.)

You're right. It's the poorest attach rate of any 3D Mario title on these shores, and it's on a content-starved platform with no meaningful competition that month. (Obviously there was competition by/on other consoles, but the Wii U basically had Super Mario 3D World in November and nothing else of consequence.) As tiny as the userbase is, it's a pretty safe bet that the couple million people in North America who own a Wii U are Nintendo fanatics and are really into the idea of 3D World despite Nintendo's refusal/inability to market it. That they didn't open their wallets in its early days, especially in the wake of universal critical praise, shows how thoroughly Nintendo's poisoned the well. Maybe the severe drought of games earlier this year had people just mothballing their Wii Us? General Mario fatigue? I don't know how many other excuses there are.

I still think it all boils down to the damn name and confusion over how it works with the Wii. I know its a cash cow but I think their best move would be to clear all the Wiis out making WiiU the only option on store shelves. Stores can continue to sell Wii games and accessories since they'll work on WiiU.

I don't know how much that'll help since just about everyone who wants a Wii already has one.

Things are apparently so bad that not only are people not buying Wii Us in significant numbers, but the people who've bought Wii Us have given up on the console and aren't really buying software.

This was reportedly Nintendo's worst November ever for a console this early in its lifespan (Virtual Boy excepted).
