Could it be because you already bought the indie games in their current promotion, and Nintendo credited your account accordingly?

That's a good deal. I picked up Giana Sisters for $5.99 since I already had Toki Tori 2+ & MSF (have Runner 2 on PS3).

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Maybe the refund is related to this?
If you purchased a Wii U season pass for DLC related to Batman: Arkham Origins, you might want to check your eShop account. You might have $20 credit waiting for you, as explained by Nintendo below.

"Thanks so much for your support of Batman: Arkham Origins on Wii U.

We are contacting you today because you purchased the Batman: Arkham Origins Season Pass for Wii U. We hope you’ve been enjoying the content that has been delivered thus far. Based on demand for Downloadable Content on the system, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has made the decision to remove its offering of the upcoming new story campaign for Wii U. As a result, we will be crediting the entire $19.99+tax cost of the Season Pass back to your Nintendo eShop account. You will still be able to enjoy the content already released thus far.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your support of the game.

Sincerely,
Nintendo of America Inc."
Yikes.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I guess I'm a little late to this thread, but I picked up the Mario/Luigi bundle last week on a semi-impulse buy. I've waited this long for budgetary reasons, but with Christmas money, paying off my car in December, and having a third bi-weekly paycheck this month (less what I pre-spent on the Zelda 3DS XL) I figured I could jump on board.

Now I'm trying to go back into budgeting mode, but I don't want to end up with no games, either. Most of the top titles (Pikmin 3, Mario 3D World, etc.) I know I'll get at some point, but I'll need to space them out. I'm leaning towards NintendoLand or Wii Party U to get an extra Wii Remote +, but I'm not sure which I should get first. Part of me wants Wind Waker HD, but I don't know if I can ever justify $50. What's the story with the GameCube version? Earlier in this thread it sounded like it was worth some money, but I couldn't find anything. I wouldn't mind selling off my copy to get the HD version.

I went through this thread and added all the friend IDs I saw. If you haven't gotten a request from Koyaani, go ahead and add me.

How many of those 3 million WiiUs out there were really bought by soccer moms? I'm gonna guess the bulk of them are core gamers wanting the latest Nintendo console for first party games. It's not like the WiiU name is doing them any favors.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

It'd be nice if Nintendo would do / say something to try to inspire a little enthusiasm. Instead, it's radio silence (towards consumers, anyway) and an apparent drought (again) between February and May on the Wii U. Backing up to Super Mario 3D World in November, that's something like six months with only three first-party games, right? Heck, the fact that Nintendo says that Mario Kart 8 is coming out in May probably means it's really coming out in September. Honestly, I wonder if Mario Kart might be ready a little sooner, but they want the entirety of the release to take place in a different financial quarter / year.

Hopefully there'll be a really amazing Nintendo Direct in February.

I don't think many of them were core games at all. I think those people learned their mistakes from buying a Wii and have it collect dust. Those people have moved on.

I agree with Corvin, I think he uses "core" gamer to mean a Nintendo fan, like those of us in this thread. He doesn't necessarily mean the CoD-is-the-best-game-every-year gamer.

I see it as more core gamers bought the Wii U than families.

And there in lies the problem "You don't even use your Wii anymore and you want a new one?"

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

...which is part of the reason it was so moronic for Nintendo to cut off development for the Wii prematurely. Borderline-nothing for the Wii between 2010 and 2012 as far as first party titles go, and the underwhelming Wii U release slate clearly didn't benefit from those years off. The Wii was losing momentum anyway, but that killed it dead.

Ah, OK, that I agree with a little more. Yeah, the die hard Nintendo fans went out and bought the Wii U when it first came out. But I still think that the Wii name is general is tarnished. The Wii ended up becoming a big paperweight for most people after the novelty wore off. Nintendo should have stuck with Revolution or something similar.

Heck, I wonder if the Nintendo name is tarnished at this point, at least with hardcore gamers (and by that I mean the COD annuals). This is their 4th console in a row with lackluster third-party support, at least relative to other systems. Maybe too many people associate Nintendo with good first-party games and not much else.

I don't know how they get out of it, because it's a catch-22; people won't buy in until they see good third-party support, but then if they don't buy in the games that actually get made won't sell well enough.

For their next system, they might have to bite the bullet and make it competitive WRT horsepower. Releasing underpowered systems doesn't work in a multiplatform world. Although the Gamecube wasn't the greatest success, it did get the best third-party support post-SNES. Maybe in an alternate world with fewer mistakes (bigger memory cards, good online support, full-sized discs and DVD), the GC could have been much bigger.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

The supplements to the investors' meeting list upcoming Wii U titles.

Wii Fit U (1/10)
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2/21)
Mario Kart 8 (Spring 2014; confirmed elsewhere to be May)
Hyrule Warriors (temporary title?; 2014)
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (2014)
Bayonetta 2 (2014)
A brand new title developed by Monolith Software Inc. (formerly known as X?; 2014)
Yarn Yoshi (temporary title?; TBD)
Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (temporary title?; TBD)
The Legend of Zelda (temporary title?; TBD)

That doesn't include third party titles, of course. No real surprises, but I thought it might be worth posting anyway. I'm interested in all the tentatively-confirmed-for-2014 games, but geez, slim pickin's...

Hmm only 2 titles with nailed down dates, 1 one of which has already passed.

There's not a lot going on in this pre-release page on Gamestop:

I'm not a codder, but my recollections of the previous two consoles and thoughts on the current...

Gamecube: Had good power. Somewhat lacking in 3rd-party support. It wasn't my main system, but I liked it.

Wii: Lacking in power. Inexpensive enough that I was willing to give it a try. Hated the motion controls. Returned it.

Wii-U: Lacking in power. Digital triggers. I have serious doubts about the tablet controller. Not inexpensive enough that I'm willing to give it a try.

Since I'm not willing to pay for Kinect and there's not a deluge of games yet for the PS4, now would be a good time for Nintendo to sneak in. A price drop or a Bayonetta bundle (with disc) would be good, but neither seems to be looming on the horizon.

The time to sneak in was 2013. They squandered an entire year head start.

I'm not as open as I would've been in 2013, but I see myself being more open now than later. I'm in an odd position where I don't really want a Wii U, but I'm sort of rooting for it.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

This is where I'd disagree with Nintendo that a price drop won't matter. The Wii U might no longer be selling to the families that bought the Wii, but it can still sell to the gamers who want to play first party Nintendo games as a secondary console to the PS4 or XBox One. That's basically all the Wii was for most of us anyway, right? It's just too expensive to do that at the moment.

Now i'm sure Nintendo would be taking a loss so they want to hold off on price drops until they can make the system and controller cheaper, but I wonder how long they can last waiting for that to happen. I've always thought there's nothing wrong with accepting they're not #1 but making a profit like the Gamecube. Hopefully they can drop costs to get there.

It's funny though, I saw a commercial last night i think on TBS where kids were playing Mario on the Wii U and thought "oh neat, Nintendo is finally advertising!" Until I saw it was really an ad for Mario shapes in Campbell's soup.

Wii-U: Lacking in power. Digital triggers. I have serious doubts about the tablet controller. Not inexpensive enough that I'm willing to give it a try.
GameCube: In my eyes, was Nintendo's worst console. While GameCube probably had the most third-party support out of any of their consoles, it lacked in features and power when compared to the PS2 and Xbox. It also had a controller that rivaled the Nintendo 64's in regards to an abortion.

Wii: Lacking in power and graphics wise, it didn't feel like much of a successor to the GameCube. The motion controls were neat for games that properly utilized them, but most third-party games had no idea how to use them. However, the first party titles were damn good.

Wii U: While more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, the console is probably what the Wii should've been as a majority of the software runs comfortably at either 720p/60 or 1080p/30. The GamePad is an interesting idea and isn't as cumbersome as I expected, but few games have taken proper advantage of it. It's been more than a year since it's launch and there's still a lack of software available and planned for the horizon.

While we own a few titles for the system (Fitness Evolved, Just Dance 4, NintendoLand, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Wii U, Wii Fit U, and Wonderful 101), the console gets very little play time.

Nintendo either needs to make their next console more in line to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One where a developer can easily port over their game as they use similar x86 coding to get third-parties back on board or they need to start bowing out of hardware and focusing more on software. Simple as that. Activision and Ubisoft are the only two big third-party developers still focusing on the Wii U. It's just a matter of time before either of stops all together.

Wow, other than the C-stick instead of a real analog, the GCN/Wavebird still ranks up there with the best of them for me. It's still leagues above the DualShock 1-3. How exactly is it an abortion?
