For the ones in the preview program, the Smartglass app was updated, just the Windows and Android versions. Looks good, although I haven't tested it too much.

I would like to see if it serves as a good blu-ray remote.

its a gimmick that ran its course. like like wiimote and plastic guitars. they sold their millions with kinect 1, and tried to recreate it by force-bundling kinect 2. they gambled that people would roll over and take the force-bundle because they wanted the X1 so badly, because they knew they couldn't count on selling millions more of K2 as a standalone. time will tell if the gamble worked out.

Like I said before I just hate that the X1 doesn't have auto-sign in. It's just a "feature" designed to compel you to keep the Kinect connected. It's so stupid -- I have my 360 running through my XO and now I will play my games on a 360 that is auto-signed in through an XO that isn't signed in. That's absurd, but I don't really see the need to select then sign in to the XO just to play a 360 game anyway. They need to enable that option double-quick

I've been wondering about this, how well does that work? Is there any delay when playing on the 360?

The one Kinect feature I'd actually use besides pausing Netflix is turning the console on with voice commands. But my universal remote turns it on when it turns on the receiver and projector already. And I still have to turn my controller on...which would turn it on too anyway.

So I just use it for fun more than anything.

So MS officially confirmed today that "Modern" Windows PC/Tablet/Phone apps can be easily ported to Xbox One. They teased this at last year's /BUILD conference. I hope someone builds an app that can recognize the 360's HD DVD add-on and play HD DVDs on the XO.

Are we sure it wasn't just a feature that was forgotten in the rush to change the way the entire system worked in the few months right before it launched, like a lot of other basic features? I expect it'll be added in sooner rather than later.

It works fine. I haven't seen any noticeable delay or lag (though I did read words of caution about it from Kotaku at launch).

Yeah, the general impression (from mostly tech blogs) was that it may be a problem for games that require excellent reflexes (multiplayer FPS, for example), but otherwise, it's only noticeable to those who are sensitive to such things already.

Some info about Windows apps running on XBox One, basically that Microsoft needs to approve them. Still, kind of neat and the type of thing Microsoft can take advantage of. Although... insert joke about the lack of good Windows apps

If they would just add a Rhapsody app I'd be happy, and maybe a Sirius XM app. Xbox Music just doesn't do it for me (I might get it if they decide never to get a Rhapsody app).

Also, why can't they add screen savers? It's lacking on the PS4 too.

You mean running an Xbox 360 (if it has HDMI) through the Xbox One HDMI-In instead of a cable box? People have been doing (and recommending against) that since launch.

re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

New 1404 preview update details. Friend notifications implemented!!

-Ongoing fixes and adjustments to the user interface. Additional fixes to address audio crackling sound encountered when Dolby Digital is enabled.
-Fixes for Blu-ray software issues that can result in 0x21 or 0x87de07d1 errors.
-Update to address an issue where ejecting a Blu-ray disc after the drive is idle can result in the disc being pulled back in, requiring a second eject command.
-Fix to address Kinect not responding to “yes” or “no” after issuing the “Xbox, turn off” command.
-Updates to reduce or eliminate Blu-ray drive “seeking” sounds after drive is idle (experienced in the 1403 update.)
-Fix for LiveTV audio outputting in stereo instead of surround sound.
-Update for the Blu-ray player to fix an issue where it can freeze if left idle or paused for an extended period of time.
-Update to fix an issue where fast forwarding or rewinding an external video source results in screen freezing when surround sound is enabled.
-Fix for video playback stuttering while audio plays back normally in several apps (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, etc.)

NEW CONTROLLER FIRMWARE UPDATE
-Update to help address controller disconnect issues.
-Update to help address headset adapter audio quality

FEATURES ENABLED
-Game save progress bar will now display when syncing cloud game saves.
-50Hz Blu-ray player support for content recorded at 50Hz.
-Improved GameDVR video quality.
-Online friends notification, including the ability to filter notifications to all friends, favorites only, or disable friends online notifications altogether.

NEW FEATURE
Requested by the update preview community: Manually install available updates. If a new system update is detected as available, a button will appear under Settings, System that will display “Apply Available System Update.”
Note: this feature is being enabled after this current update completes installation. This feature will be available to preview when the next update is made available.

NEW FEATURE
A new ability to automatically redeem a license code from console messages. For future console messages that include a 5x5 license code, a new option will appear to allow you to automatically redeem the license, versus having to copy and paste the license code.

KNOWN ISSUES
Some preview participants may encounter an issue where the Blu-ray drive will not ingest a disc after the console has been idle for a period of time. The disc will need to be removed and re-inserted for the disc to be ingested. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
Some preview participants may encounter an issue where some non-Blu-ray disc media types are pulled back into the Blu-ray disc drive after being ejected, requiring a second eject command. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
In this version of the 1404 update, the startup process of a console doing a cold boot up (systems that are configured for power saving mode, versus instant on) will encounter a delay of approximately 30 seconds, during which a solid black screen is displayed. This issue is not present for consoles powering up from a standby state. A fix for this issue is currently being tested.
During silent update installation some devices controlled by the Xbox One via IR (TVs, receivers) may power up in the middle of the update process and not power back down. The developers are investigating this issue.

Fuck yeah!
Oh... my Kinect is disconnected because they won't release an extension cable. Nevermind.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. It's not like it's a difficult fix -- the 360 and PS3 did it at launch. But anything that completely negates the need for Kinect? That must scare the bejesus out of MS.

That's an impressive list of fixes and new features. It's a good thing.

Have those of you who need the auto-sign in voiced your request in any official way? They are definitely taking community complaints/requests seriously and seem to be putting those at the top of the priority list.

If you are in the preview program, go to the forums and there's one for requests. There's already a post there in the first page requesting that. I just replied to it.

Major Nelson also frequents the Reddit Xbox One subforum and has taken a lot of suggestions from there.
