FINALLY found the motherlode at one of the stores around here - checked out three within a 15 mile radius, and only one had the goods. Nothing not mentioned here (and no Spaceballs) but I was happy to finally find stuff.

Since we've been seeing a lot of MGM World Films at these stores (and since I'm bored at work) I went ahead and looked up the IMDB scores for all of these releases in hopes that we will see more and more of them in the near future (and I'll know which ones are generally regarded as good).
I doubt many of you use this line of thinking, but I figured anything with a 7.5 or higher was worth a blind-ish buy for $3... so here's the full list of MGM World Films with corresponding IMDB score as of April 29.

Babette's Feast - 7.7
The Bride Wore Black - 7.4
Chocolat - 6.8
Camille Claudel - 7.2
Cyrano De Bergerac - 7.5
Darling - 7.2
Eat Drink Man Woman - 7.5
Electra - 7.9
Europa Europa - 7.8
Fanny And Alexander - 8.1
La Femme Nikita - 7.5
Fellini's Roma - 7.3
Fellini's Satyricon - 6.7
Flight Of The Innocent - 7.1
Hey Babu Riba - 7.9
Jesus Of Montreal - 7.3
Leningrad Cowboys Go America - 6.4
Life And Nothing But - 7.6
La Cage Aux Folles (& part 2) - 7.1 & 5.5
La Chamade - 5.9
Live Flesh - 7.4
Manon Of The Spring - 8.0
May Fools - 7.3
My Mother's Castle - 7.5
Mademoiselle - 7.2
The Man Who Loved Women - 7.5
Mississippi Mermaid - 7.0
My Father's Glory - 7.5
Mystery Of Rampo - 6.6
Night Of The Shooting Stars - 7.9
Prisoner Of The Mountains - 7.7
Raise The Red Lantern - 7.9
Rhapsody In August - 7.3
Shame - 8.3
Small Change - 7.5
The Story Of Adele H. - 7.4
To Live - 8.1
A Tale Of Springtime - 7.2
Together - 7.4
Wings Of Desire - 8.1
Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown - 7.5
The Wild Child - 7.6

Just to clarify: No, not all of these films have been spotted at Big Lots. No, I don't know if any more will be added to Big Lots. I'm just trying to help because some (not all, of course) are a little unfamiliar to most of us and may be worth the blind buy. Enjoy.

Apparently the Blue Springs, MO store is trying to improve. I was just in there again today and they've definitely done a restock since my last visit. Of course, it looked thoroughly picked over (was that you rider555?), and if the good titles were ever there they were long gone. I ended up taking only Loser.

Went to another Biglots and saw many titles previously mentioned and here were some lesser mentioned titles that they had for $3 each:

Gangster no. 1 (Malcolm McDowell, Paul Bettany, David Thewlis, Safforn Burrows)
Losin' it (Tom Cruise)
Bats (Lou Diamond Phillips)
Fly Away Home (Jeff Daniels)

Nope, not me!I was in there last night and was glad to see that they had indeed added quite a bit,but saw nothing I wanted. So,all I walked out with was a bag of harvest cheddar Sun Chips.
I plan on checking out the one in Independence tomorrow.

My Big Lots looked to be restocked, but found no Spaceballs CE or Memento LE. There was an extra Batman 1943 though and lots of FF: Spirits Within.

It was also frustrating because the boxes of DVDs were stacked on top of each other, so it was very difficult to lift them up and look at the titles underneath.

My whining worked! My only local Big Lots stocked something besides VHS and public domain titles today. They had a shelf or three of these MGM titles you all have been listing. Picked up 15 or so. Surprised to see Jean de Florette there, isn't this old version OOP?

Yes, I believe it is OOP, but I didn't know there was a newer version available except the double feature disc with Manon Of The Spring.

^ cool thanks. Yeah at $3, I'll grab it too. I've never seen it, but since King had some involvement in this version (unlike Kubrick's obviously), it is supposed to be more true to his vision I guess. We'll see

picked up:

the fog (carpenter version)
four friends (obscure 80s film that my wife is a huge fan of)
don't come knocking (wim wenders)
what to do in case of fire (a 2002 german film about 60s revolutionaries - was priced at $2, maybe a holdover from an older sale?)

couldn't find two of the titles I was looking for, the howling and steamboy, but not bad for $11.

as others have pointed out, it's good to take a quick walk around the store. the one I was in had dvds up front by the register, but also another display in a different area with a whole other set of titles in it.

FYE has STEAMBOY as part of it's $6.88 promotion. A store near me had these along with the $4.88 titles on promotion as 3 for $12 but i believe that's ended.

The TV version of The Shining is very faithful to the book, as it should be since King did the screenplay himself. If I recall correctly it even lifts dialogue right from the book. At $3 I'd absolutely recommend picking it up. In some ways I actually like it better than Kubrick's take.
