Why does Columbia House have a "clearence" section where they have discounted titles that will go back to regular price and stil be carried after being on clearence? Isn't that basically a "sale"?

Nope. The only versions of that they carry are unrated. I'm actually still looking for a deal on the rated version of that too.

It seems that Columbia House rarely has both rated and unrated versions, at least for the movies I'm interested in. Anchorman and Talladega Nights both have unrated DVDs available through Columbia House but they've never offered the rated versions that I'm aware of.

Hmm I notice now the Ghost Rider 2 Disc isn't available for enrollment. Maybe that is why my latest attempt failed since it is now disabled.

^^ We used to have some folks here who would run a data miner program that would pull the info on all titles, which could then be pasted into a spreadsheet. It was very handy to have the entire Columbia House catalog that could then be searched or sorted as we pleased.

If there is anyone with broadband and the programming skills to write and run a data miner program, any such a project would be appreciated by many here!

It would be great if someone could do that. I've got experience in programming and a broadband connection, but this is out of my league. I have no idea how to build something like that from scratch. If there was still something existing that just needed to be maintained and ran I might be able to figure it out.

^You might want to contact AlfB, who used to post his list in the data miner thread stickied to the top of the forum. He might be willing to give you the code he used. But it would need to be updated to reflect the changes that Columbia House has made to their website.

I ended up writing a quick and dirty program to figure out what to order for the current B1G1 promotion. I was thinking of writing a more comprehensive program but I have three obstacles:

Something I didn't see offhand was a way to tell if a title counted as a box set or not. I suppose if it's listed under "Sets & Collections" or has a 40% discount, it'd count but I want to catch any sets that'd inadvertently qualify for free shipping. Is there any way to tell for sure without adding it to your cart?

Grabbing all the titles and prices is easy. The A-Z listings have the note "*This selection is not available as a sponsor reward or as an enrollment selection." but I don't see any asterisks. It looks like checking if a title is available as an enrollment selection requires looking up that title's webpage.
Doing that for every title would take more bandwidth and processing time than I'd like to use.

Can someone recommend a good foreign free webhosting service? ;-) Although sorting the titles by price should be fair use, I don't wanna deal with any copyright-related headaches.

My recollection is that previous data mining was done by searching each individual "Item ID" and then capturing the data displayed. But it does take a lot of time and bandwidth, which is why it hasn't been done lately.

Used to be that there was no way to search the enrollment website, so the data miner was essential to select the best enrollment titles. Now that we can all search the enrollment site, a data miner list would be more of a convenience than essential.

How much does the Yes Minister boxset cost? I'm thinking of using it to fulfill (I'm not a member yet) my account and was hoping that it would count as 2 DVDs. But I'm not sure if the member price is greater than $39.94. If someone could check, that would be great.

Yes Minister The Complete Collection is $47.97, so that would count as two towards fulfilling.

If I assume that once a title's available for enrollment, it'll stay that way, then I won't have to check that title again in the future. That'll significantly cut down the time and bandwidth. My objectives for data mining are sorting/searching by price and tracking changes in the title availability. I wouldn't mind saving a personal copy of all the DVD cover art as well.

99.99% of the time that's true, but there are occasional titles which are removed from enrollment eligibility, the most recent being Ghost Rider 2-disc. It was available for the 1st week or two and now it's not, only the 1-disc is available now, as is usually the case with CH if there are two versions available at the same time. This only happens with titles where there are two versions, a 1-disc and a 2-disc.
Also, sometimes the 2-disc is released first and then a 1-disc later (like Memoirs Of A Geisha), so after the 1-disc comes out, it is available for enrollment, but the 2-disc is removed. This isn't always the case, but is more common that not.

Prices change all the time too.

AlfB was the last one to have a data miner running, and I was working with him on posting it on my website as well as his (mine's still there, you can find a link in the data miner thread, but it's way out of date).
I would offer my website for posting the dataminer files again, but do not know if I have the time to devote to adding the data to my website for easy searching, etc.
