Actually it is the R rated version included. The Unrated version is only available in the SE trilogy pack.

There is a new trilogy pack at Target that everyone should be aware of though. Since it contains the single disc releases of the films. And that means the R rated version of Robocop is in the pack. It's $20, while the Unrated triple SE pack runs about $30 still.

And the upcoming steelcase edition is listed as R rated on websites so far. So the chances are great, that it is the R rated version.

I am very confused by this post. Since footage was added to the DC version of the film and not 'removed'. I'm all for uncensored movies when it comes to sex and violence. And the unrated version packs a wallop with the uncut violence! So the R version is not something I care for in this case. But it's not 'bad', just a tad less effective in specific sequences after seeing the uncensored version.

My point is: the stuff that was removed, in order make an "R" cinema cut, and which is re-instated in the "Director's cut", is better off removed! I think the cinema cut is tighter and better without this footage. More violence? So what? I thought it looked cheesy. In other words, I prefer the version that I've watched and loved all these years. I don't subscribe to this "director's cut is the ultimate version" bollocks.

So what's this upcoming steelcase thing?

That is the creepiest cover I've ever seen.

All that was re-edited back into the film was mere seconds. In the MGM release, they are inserted seamlessly, unlike the Criterion version, where you can hear the soundtrack loop at certain parts.

I know it's mere seconds, but those scenes in the unrated cut are drastically changed for me.

I love how they used zip-lock bags for squibs during the ED-209 sequence.

I'm usually a huge fan of director's cuts myself, and I prefer the theatrical release also. My violence does not always mean better. In this case, I thought the extra violence harmed the overall feel of the movie.

Thank you! I thought the shots of the scientists tinkering with ED-209's wiring while it's blasting away was jarringly cheesy. I love Bottin's work, but I just think the extra bloodbath during Murphy's death was too much. I suppose it goes along with Verhoeven's Christ theme, though. Anyway, I don't see why this cut should be the definitive version of the film. An SE with BOTH cuts would be preferable.

So, what's the best version of the 1987 cinema cut?
(that being said, I swear, when I saw it opening weekend, that the adrenaline shot going into Murphy's heart was fully shown)

And what's this steelcase thing mentioned earlier?

#1: About freakin' time we get a stand-alone RoboCop SE, if true. Had to buy the trilogy used and I keep RoboCop 3 tucked away. Maybe I should sell my Criterion...

#2: The only two good covers for RoboCop have been the Image release from 1997 and the Criterion. This one may as well be the worst. The MGM covers have always looked more airbrushed than a Playboy issue these days, but this IMO takes it to a new extreme.

To demonstrate, let me compare this new cover to the old Kenner action figure from the RoboCop and the Ultra Police toy line.

They look eerily similar.

P.S.: The uncut version owns any day of the week. When I first rented the Criterion DVD I was blown away by the ED-209 and Murphy scenes being even bloodier than the rated version's counterparts I had seen for years.

Those lips on the cover just wrong. He looks like he's about to give someone a kiss.

Speak of the devil, a lenticular re-release for Terminator will also come out the same day. And guess what? The look of Arnie/Exo-skeleton looks off as well!

I'm guessing the flip-side of RoboCop's cover will have Murphy minus the visor (That should guarantee nightmares!)

Anyway, God knows how long I've waited on a singular Unrated release of RoboCop. Never wanted the Criterion because it was non-anamorphic. Never wanted the trilogy because I don't associate parts 2 and 3 with 1. And if this re-release is just the same as MGM's regular R-version, then I'll just have to focus on other region releases from now on. This is ridiculous.

A mistake. Fox/MGM are releasing a series of catalog releases (clearly so Fox can make some money). Double-disc sets get a steelbook, single-disc editions get a lenticular cover. Since this is single-disc, it gets the lenticular cover.

I'm not going to trust Amazons 'unrated' listing just yet. Since they have been known to mislabel many releases with 'unrated' before all the details are known. I'll wait for reviews to come in to confirm which version it contains.

When did RoboCop become a cylon?

Also I loved RC as a kid to but when got my Criterion as a young adult it made the movie kick even more ass. I really can't see what the problem is here. Same thing with the extended cut of Aliens.

Heh. That was my first thought as well. I was actually thinking that the lenticular cover is going to have the orange glow-light slide from left to right.

Well, as we all know, a 20th anniversary (on my God I feel old) edition is coming out.

Is there a stand-alone release of Robocop 2 that is anamorphic??

Bump. I see there is a solo release of Robocop 2 from 2004, and it's anamorphic. Is it the same as in the boxset?

Same disc AFAIK. Anamorphic, 5.1 surround, and the trailer.
