FYI: I have seen copies of The Frighteners and the Tremors 4-pack both with and without the ticket sticker on the covers. In fact, my local Wal*Mart had more Tremors without the ticket sticker than with the sticker... This is not limited to CH.

I don't know about this particular case, but I did receive a ticket to Be Cool when I bought Get Shorty from Columbia House last spring. I think that this might just be a random thing, but if someone who ordered it from CH could confirm if they got a ticket to King Kong, it would be appreciated.

This makes sense since the King Kong ticket is only valid for a 2 week window. It would be stupid to put the ticket in thousands and thousands of discs that will still be selling when the ticket is expired.

My disc froze at the needle injection part (I guess that's the layer change?). I have an old Toshiba player (about 7 years old or so). I tried it on my new Philips player (the cheap one that plays everything) and it wouldn't even load the movie side of the disc.
So what do I do know? I got it at B&N, and they're ordering me a replacement -- but am I just going to have the same problem? How do I get one that works?
And is there a way to contact Universal by phone?
Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!

ps. Don't have itwith me to see where it was made. Came w/one movie ticket.

For those that have problems or concerns about Universal's dvd-18 discs, wouldn't it make more sense to rent it first to test the disc out rather than paying $15-$20 and going through the hassle of exchanging it? This goes for Casino, Mallrats, Cinderella Man also...
Of course, this is assuming Blockbuster and/or Hollywood Video has them to rent.

My Frighteners DC had no stickers about Taiwan or Mexico and no paper inside saying anything (no insert either), so I have absolutely no idea where my disc was made, and so far nobody has been able to say how to tell by looking at the DVD itself where it was made. That's why I keep getting amazed how everyone else seems to know where there discs were made.

I returned mine to Borders (though I bought it at B&N). The replacement came in a cardboard outer sleeve (the copy I got from B&N originally did not). I took it home and fast forwarded through the movie to the spot where it froze last time (which was at the layer change) -- I didn't bother watching it all again because my player would freeze at the bad spot even on fast-forward. It was fine and the rest of the movie played fine. Then I fast-forwarded through the special features and it froze on Side B on Chapter 28 of the doc, basically making me lose about 18 seconds worth of material (it will fast-forward fine from 18 seconds later through the end). So I'm not going to bother returning it again for another once, as the movie seems okay and it's only 18 seconds of the doc, though it's ridiculous that anybody would *need* to be okay with this. I'm going to watch the movie with commentary and the doc and storyboards this weekend, so that'll be the true test (and if it freezes in different spots, then I will bring it back again). At least I got a second Kong movie ticket out of it, but it's a small consolation to the aggravation.

I guess I got lucky for once. I finally watched my copy last night. I got mine from Amazon and it has a "Made in Mexico" sticker on the back of the slip case (took me forever to find it). Watched it completely through on my Panasonic SA-HT680 without any problems. There was a very very brief pause at the layer change (needle injection scene) which was strange since I have not noticed a layer change on a dvd in a long long time (not since owning a few first generation dvd players), but the movie and storyboard featurette played without any problems. I did not try out side 2.
I also played the layer change on my Malata DVD-806 and it played through it without any problems, and I didn't notice any pausing at all.
I have not tried any of the features on side B, so I could be speaking too soon.

It makes sense to check the layer change since DVD players are different and some more tolerant than others, but even if you have a very tolerant DVD player do you want a disc that is marginal?
Lots of people are saying they are watching the entire movie or documentary for playback problems. Here's my dumb question: why don't people just run both sides of the disc through a DVD quality scanner (one that does PI/PO failures) like Nero or Kprobe assuming you have the right drive and software (most people I know do).
I've run Universal DVD-18s through this and if you get a bad DVD it's very obvious by the massive error levels right after the layer change. If you get a good scan, chances are high your player won't have trouble on such a good disc, but if you have a bad scan then it's worth seeing if your player can handle it or exchange if you can. In my case, my DVD-18s with bad scans still play OK, so I asked if anyone thought I should still exchange them and I got no feedback. Just my 2 cents.

Not neccesarily on topic, but now that this has seen release, and work on Kong is complete, can we expect SEs of any of Jackson's earlier films, or at this point is it safe to just pick up the current versions. I've wanted to pick up Bad Taste, Dead Alive, Meet the Feebles, Heavenly Creatures, and Forgotten Silver for a while now, but have held out thinking Jackson would do work on special features. Any word on any of these?

Finally watched it tonight. No problems at all!

And that was on my oldest dvd player...Slight pause at the injection scene. But I hardly noticed. Good deal!
