Somehow I missed this show when it originally aired and the various DVD sets and import pilot before. I am really enjoying the show so far (almost done with season 1). The packaging is almost like Freaks and Geeks, although that set had cool shots of the major characters incorporated in the packaging! I wish they would have used something closer to that style. Here it just becomes a major pain to get a single disc out without disrupting the postcards. I would have rather just had a booklet. Seems strange that Paramount didn't combine the extras from Season 2 with the "new" extras. Oh well. Too much to buy this time of year to worry.

A few questions for those that have the original season 1:
What are the commentaries like?
How many are there?

Just a heads up that there is a great interview with Charles de Lauzirika who produced this DVD set here:

Wow. Charles de Lauzirika is one of the premiere names in DVD producing. It's surprising then, that so much was left out of this box set...

There was a track on each of the seven episodes. From a review I wrote (no spoilers):

Episode one's commentary track features director Duwayne Dunham, Dunham talks about how he met David Lynch and the genesis of the series. His commentary is much more general than screen specific, concentrating on the hectic editing schedule at the time (Lynch was shooting Wild at Heart during the beginning of Twin Peaks and Dunham was his editor).

Episode two features director of photography of every episode of the series, Frank Byers. This track is EXTREMELY technical. In the Mouth of Madness commentary technical. Lighting techniques are discussed at great length. Truly disappointing, especially considering the importance of the episode.

Episode three features director Tina Rathborne, who's being interviewed on her front yard. Again, not many details about the story or little bits that fans enjoy here. In fact, it sounds like her track is one long, rambling sentence.

Episode four's track get things back on... er, track with director Tim Hunter and writer Robert Engels. Lots of down to earth talk and behind the scenes tidbits in this one. Excellent.

Episode five's track features director Lesli Linka Glatter. Another great track, and thankfully she knows that her two aforementioned "Mt. Rushmore" shots are silly.

Episode six has another great track, this one with director Caleb Deschanel and writer Harley Peyton. Notables here include discussion of the "Twin Peaks Theme Park" (all of the sets were constructed under one roof, so all of the sets were literally at your disposal and you could hang out in all of the Peaks locations). Peyton makes fun of a character's demise in season two, and late in the track, Caleb manages to nail down exactly why the show worked so well and why the movie completely failed (imo).

Episode seven's track is a bit of a let down, considering the importance of this particular show. Production designer Richard Hoover talks about his work on the series.

Nothing to do with the box set. I just thought this would be the best place to post it.

This set looks to be like a no-go to me... I'll wait untill David Lynch (who is crazy and I love it) can somehow muster up some kind of mental paradigm that is more to my preferences... mainly HD, demystifying commentaries and ridiculous amounts of extra deleted scenes and whatnot.

Well then you're probably going to have to wait until he's dead and someone wrestles the rights away from his estate...

From: http://www.dugpa.com/interview_lauzirika.php

Dugpa: For the original Season 2 DVD set, some fans were surprised with some of the alterations in both sound and video. Most notably the video in Episode 14 during the Maddy death scene and the audio in Episode 28 where Cooper spots Windom Earle. Were these changes done intentionally?
What alterations are they talking about specifically? Both in the two scenes/episodes mentioned and in other places? (Haven't got to those episodes yet on the Gold Box set...)

Charles de Lauzirika: But for my part of it, I had known there was a disc of deleted scenes, outtakes and circle takes floating around in the fan community. I acquired a copy from a fan who shall remain nameless, but someone who's very supportive and active in the Twin Peaks fan community.
Does anybody know where one could obtain a copy of this disc of deleted scenes? Or are they available on Youtube maybe or on-line anywhere maybe?

Thanks!

^^^ Nothing major, except they took out a very cheesy line reading by Coop when he spots Windom Earle. It was in the original broadcast, became a quotable piece of unintentional humor, and then deleted from the Season 2 set. Not sure if they kept it in the Gold Box.

The Maddy change is one shot of Leland approaching her, but honestly I think it's a hair-split.

Thanks for the reply!

Why would they cut/change that...?

It's not the shot of him running all creepy-like at her, is it?

There are very, very, very minor alterations to two very brief moments in the second season. They change nothing, story wise.

So why do you think they were made? And when?

And is that disc of deleted scenes and alternate takes available anywhere?

Thanks for the post!

^_^ I'm a young stubborn kid... I can wait a few more years. After which I'll give up and give in to a lower price.

But seriously... you don't think there's a need to let this be in HD?

Why wouldn't there be? The series was shot on film and has beautiful cinematography.

I wish Lynch and Frost would work up a script for a final Twin Peaks finale movie and shoot it as an anime feature. They could get most of the original actors to reprise their roles via voiceover. That would be truly awesome.

I honestly believe the reason we've never seen more TWIN PEAKS (other than the fact that Lynch is never going to work for television again) is because he NEVER wanted us to have a "conclusion" - that's one of the reasons he made the final episode and movie version so frustratingly confusing/open-ended. He wanted TWIN PEAKS to end with a lot of questions and no answers.

agreed. but, i think the content is well worth it. i just wish there was a booklet of some sort inside, rather than an ad for david lynch's coffee.

i can live without the extras from the S1 set, as i thought some of the interviews were bizarre & uncomfortable.

Frankly, I like the packaging. What was wrong with it? For a large number of discs it sure beats what they did for the Alien Quadrilogy.

I do agree about the Coffee ad insert. I don't mind them putting ads in IF they also have a legitimate insert. Otherwise, it's really just a slap in the face.

Lynch has said recently that if it were to continue it would be on the internet. I think he's just done with show, though. It ended like that because he hoped they would have no choice but to renew it. He was wrong. Why he did a prequel film is eyebrow raising. I can only guess that it would involve so many flashbacks that he might as well just base the whole film on that. And maybe he secretly had some hope left. I certainly think he is very satisfied that it doesn't have a conclusion, he definitely likes the idea that it's up to the audience to make up their mind about it. To keep it living on in their minds and his.

Finally picked this up today at DVD Planet in Huntington Beach, CA for $59.99. They are having an extra 20% off sale and this was going for $74.99 before the extra discount. This was by far the best price I've seen for it, even beating Amazon.

From the restoration interview (http://www.dugpa.com/interview_adams_grant.php):

Most notably the video in Episode 14 during the Maddy death scene and the audio at the end of Episode 28 where Cooper spots Windom Earle seemed to be omitted. Were these changes done intentionally?

Ryan Adams: No changes were done, seeing as we went off the original cut camera negative, we put it out as it was cut together and intended.
Dugpa: Do you know if there are plans to release the Twin Peaks Gold Box on Blue Ray or HD-DVD?

Ryan Adams: It's currently in discussions.

It would be HD-DVD only since it's Paramount.
