Detoured to check out Buried in theaters. It's an good film with a unique structure (taking place mostly inside of a buried casket). There's a nail biting sense of dread and some over the top political commentary. I enjoyed the emphasis on sensory aspects rather than plot alone.

On a side note, I had trouble finding convenient showings of Let Me In and Case 39 (showings seem to be limited) but have been under-whelmed with the theatrical horror possibilities this season.

Don't know if this has been posted already , thought this willl help for the challenge. I will watch this for sure.......

Excited for Phil Nobile's feature length documentary "Halloween: The Inside Story"? With its small screen debut rapidly approaching, there's no reason not to be. I mean, can you really have too much of John Carpenter's Halloween around this time of year?

The first footage from the documentary just hit online over at the Biography Channel website, and it details the re-creation of the famed Myers House. Dig on it by clicking the image below.

For his feature Nobile and company have gotten Carpenter himself, Jamie Lee Curtis, and tons more including Irwin Yablans, Dean Cundey, Nick Castle, Nancy Kyes, PJ Soles, Charles Cyphers, Tony Moran, John Graham, Tommy Lee Wallace, Kim Gottlieb-Walker, Kyle Richards, Brian Andrews, Danielle Harris, and even Rob Zombie.

Set those DVRs! This is gonna be a good one! "Halloween: The Inside Story" will be hitting A&E's Biography Channel on October 28th, 9PM ET/8PM CT/10PM PT.

this too

In time for Halloween, BIO Channel offers two programs going inside famously scary films. The two-part event Nightmare on Elm Street: The Inside Story Part 1 airs October 20 at 9p and Part 2 on October 21 at 9p

The two in my list, The Infernal Boiling Pot (1903) & The Monster (1903), are easy to find online. Also, perusing the list thread I see Alyxstarr provides links to a couple different ones in their list.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 6th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (Oct 1-31) P

So, I watched The Evil Dead today. If anyone would have asked me before today if I had seen it, I would have said, "of course." Well, I found out today, that I was wrong (perhaps I saw one of the other in the series). I guess this is what happens as time goes on. I really thought I had seen this back in the 90s, but I guess not.

I pretty much hate campy films, but I had no problem with this one (and I didn't find it that campy); I'm not likely to watch it again anytime soon or buy it at it's low, low price on Blu, but I thought it was an enjoyable enough film. I am definitely a fan of the ending.

I wouldn't call it horror. It's a Troma take on Romeo and Juliet and that isn't scary to begin with. You just get the added gross out from Troma thrown into it.

I streamed this from Netflix for the first time for this challenge about a week ago and enjoyed it. I don't think it's quite "camp," though; the possessed characters are all played straight, and the humor that's present is pretty dark, rather than cheeky.

As for us, we just finished Piranha, a first-time viewing for both of us. We traded in a bunch of stuff at Half Price Books and found the "Roger Corman Classics" release of this brand new for $3.00 so we took a chance. It was exactly as advertised, which is to say a whole lot of fun. The humor was great, there was just enough real tension to keep us interested between each mauling and there's even some commentary on the military industrial complex and increasingly outdated views of masculinity. Loved every one of these 92 minutes.

Now, off to bed to watch the 1920 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with John Barrymore!

House on Sorority Row was an enjoyable recommendation, parts seemed derivative but it gets deliciously weird towards the end. Now I'm curious to see how they pulled this off in the remake.

Alternatie ending on DVD is:
Spoiler:
Clown suit face down in the pool gets turned over by police to reveal Katherine dead because the director was tired of seeing movies were there's a surviving female lead. Apparently the distributor insisted on a happier ending so the alternative ending idea was abandoned (though original ending is still grim).

I'd count it since it's a pretty twisted film with some freaky horrific moments in it.

Tonight, I watched Laid To Rest(2009) on Encore Action. It was the unrated version despite claiming to be R rated before the film began. So if anyone thinks they're missing any gore from viewing it on the channel, don't worry. It was all intact.

It was my first time seeing the film and I can't recommend it at all. It was pretty boring and stupid overall. The gore was quite graphic and excessive however, and it's a pretty sadistic film that's not fun to view. The plot is fairly basic and a survive the night ordeal, which could be interesting if handled a little better(missing was suspense and atmosphere). The opening credits are a frantic hyper edited montage of 'extreme' stuff that feels like it's trying to hard to be 'cool'. There is awful excessive shaky cam with hyper editing during the finale of the film that's just annoying to view. There is really no suspense or tension in the film either, and this makes the violence no fun to view and just unpleasant and occasionally laughable with how overdone it is to be 'extreme'. Only the very ending with a brief moment during the end credits was kind of clever and nicely handled.

So overall a thumbs down from me. But if you want to see an extremely gory violent slasher and can ignore all the flaws and stupidity, then you're in luck with this film.

A few things catching my attention:

There are dozens of horror films from the 1900s, and many will blow your mind if you read up on their effects and significance.
Evil Dead isn't campy. Pretty damn dreadful (in a good way) compared to the rest of the series
Tromeo & Juliet counts imo- enough horror to compete with many films that wouldn't be disputed.

I had the same exact reactions last year. You couldn't have said it any better.

Just wrapped up TCM's Mummy movies (Aside from Curse/Tomb, which I already watched last year)
It turns out that the first one, though generic, was the best to me (Lee's Mummy almost had a Kane Hodder menace!) Shroud was a snoozer (It felt like it wouldn't end!) And Blood/Tomb was a bumpy ride (Started out good. Went flat. Then picked up again)
Another thing I've noticed is that some of Hammer's PG-rated films are basically "R's". Blood/Tomb had plenty of ripped-throats with blood-a-gushin', as well as a bit of nudity (Though it's kinda obscured by the lighting) and over at Netflix, they have Countess Dracula with a PG-rating. But both the boobs & the blood are highly lit in that one!

I watch Survival of the Dead and WOW... that was bad. I am almost a Romero apologist, but I can't begin to explain what he was thinking with that.

I'll have to get the DVD and check that out. And yeah, the weirdness settles in quite nicely, after a good hour or so of cheesiness. And that cane is just cool.

Ringu (1998) never fails to be effective even after multiple viewings, so far the scariest film I've seen this challenge.

I watched it the other day for a different theme. I like it, but this is one of the rare instances where I find the American remake a better film.

Scarier too. Most horror films I watch like a 5 year old, hands over eyes and literally jumping at every scare. Ringu doesn't move me, while I can barely watch The Ring it's so darn creepy.

Watched Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920 silent version) last night, another first time viewing. John Barrymore is perfect in both roles; his Jekyll is perfectly dull and his Hyde seethes with unseemliness. The rest of the cast is clearly overshadowed, and it's always hard to criticize silent film acting anyway. I was surprised to hear sound effects and even some crowd noise; were these part of the original film, or have they been added after the fact? They were startling at times, distracting at others.

Watched Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie for the first time last night. Wow! That may be my discovery of the challenge. Relentlessly creepy and brutal. If you like zombies or Euro-horror, I can't reccomend this one highly enough. So good, I wondered how I went all these years without seeing it. If you have Netflix streaming, it's definitely worth 90 minutes of your time.

I actually liked it too. Kind of peters out towards the end, but still much better than "Diary" and Romero's little social commentaries are always fun.

I also watched House on Sorority Row on streaming and thought it was pretty lame. Made me want to watch Black Christmas again, actually. Of course I just got done watching New York Ripper for the first time, so the bar was set pretty high.

BTW, I'm not keeping a list this year due to a maddening schedule, but still enjoying the spirit of it all here

Just finished watching Predators.
From reading some of the reviews online I thought this was going to be bad but, like Terminator Salvation, I loved it! It was certainly better then those horrid AVP films.

Oh man, that was actually one of the earlier DVDs I bought like 10 years ago now. Such a great movie with much replay value, I still consider it one of my best blind-buys. The graveyard scene is excellent!
This needs an HD release.

It has one. I watched the Blu-ray for this challenge. And I agree that it is a great movie.

Oops. Someone beat me to it already.
