Secondly, I would like to know how many screens are actually 50 or larger. I'm sure there a lot, but I'm guessing the 37 -46 inches are the majority size for most HDTV buyers.

But I do agree that focus is the issue I can spot with an upconverted DVD vs. HD media...whether most people can see that, I don't know.
Focus and color are the two things that "eye" notice a big difference in between SD and HD.

I have yet to show anyone HD on even a 32in HDTV where they couldn't immediately notice the difference between HD and upconverted DVD. If they can't the HD transfer is either garbage or they simply have vision problems.
At the proper viewing distance for your TV the differences will be very obvious on almost any size HDTV.

Paramount is poised to drop its support of HD DVD after Warner Brothers’ recent backing of Sony’s Blu-ray technology, in a move that will sound the death knell of HD DVD and bring the home entertainment format war to a definitive end.

However, Paramount, which is owned by Viacom, is understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp that would allow it to switch sides in the event of Warner Bros backing Blu-ray, according to people familiar with the situation.

This is a strong possibility an I think rentals could be a major direction the HD market goes. Bandwith is still a major issue in the US for streaming HD content, but I think you will see it more and more from cable and satellite providers.

It is kind of sad because current HD content is super compressed and full of digital artifacts. We will end up with a generation of people that think seeing compression noise is perfectly normal just like we got used to snow back in the analog TV antenna days.

Well I ran my Big Lebowski SD and HD to my fiance, she couldn't see a difference. I could, but oh well. I'm running a 42 Sammy plasma.

That's quite a clause to have had in the contract ! I really hope that's true and they make the switch as soon as possible. I still worry that Universal will be to BD like Sony was to VHS (in terms of how long they took to release things on the other format).

I hope they switch as well. At this point its best to just move on and start 2008 focused on BD.

For things I can't find in HD-DVD, I will do without or go with SD-DVD. Sony can bite my ass, and they can keep their pathetic game console which they can only prop up with non-game content. But I'm not bitter

Guess you don't need one if you already have an X-Botch.

What exactly would have to happen to make 2008 the "year of the PS3"?

It was a joke but if something has to happen then I guess the first thing just did with Warner's decision. I can see that decision boosting the sales of some PS3 units. What really needs to happen is for game developers to remove the fingers from their asses and build games for the PS3. Learn how to work with the CELL and not bitch about it. You're game a game developer for heaven's sake. It is not like the other two systems have really any technological advances over the PS3 but that is for another discussion.

Yeah, because that sort of attitude has won console generations before. Especially in gaming, tech doesn't get you anywhere if you don't have games people want to play.

Sony threw away the video game market to win the HDM market. I don't think that's going to change at this point.

Sony were never a game company anyway, so I guess it makes sense.
Of course neither are Microsoft, but at least they kept the focus in the right place.

Again, the game developers themselves have settled on making games for the X-Box first and then porting. If you have played games like Ratchet and Clank or Uncharted you would know that great games can be made strictly for the PS3.

Of course they can, but why are they going to bother expending the energy? One look at the installed base of the Xbox vs. PS3 should tell you why they're not going to do that. I'm sure a lot of great games could have been made for the Dreamcast, too.

Yes, but those "great games" can't even sell more then 100k on release week. Kinda makes developers not want to release on the PS3 if they can't make money.

If you don't like the PS3 then don't get one. I'm fine with mine. I don't particularly care to have an X-Box but I'm not trying to sell you on getting rid of yours. The Wii might be in our future but not yet. Again, I feel like people are downplaying anything related to Sony out of what has happened. Of course the X-Box sells more games because it has a larger install base. Doesn't this seem reasonable? Isn't this basically what has happened with Blu-Ray? But none of this makes the PS3 an incompetent system.

Friendly advice, its "Xbox" not "X-Box". Its almost as bad as "blue-ray"
