I was in BJ's yesterday and they had this for sale already, along with some other WB catalog titles coming out next week (Snakes on a Plane and TCM).

Didn't pick it up because I can't stand the packaging, but I thought it was funny that someone in their stocking department clearly doesn't give a damn.

Re: Wizard of Oz / Gone with the Wind coming to Blu-ray in the 4th quarter of 2009

I picked up the last deluxe box set which had a bunch of crap. It came with a script, was supposed to come with some pictures but never did and some other garbage. If you're a real afficianado of a film I can see why you want the collectables. There are real devotees of the major films like GWTW, OZ, Titanic, Godfather, etc. They want every trinket they can ge ttheir hands on. But I would think the market is fairly limited for people to buy $60 sets of a movie that's already been released 3 or 4 times. I wouldn't mind owning it on Blu, but I like many others, the recession has taken a toll on my spending and this is not in the foreseeable future.

Do the people here who have inside info into the business know for sure that this will be released in 6 months or so without all of the crap like Casablanca or is that just an assumption?

If I absolutely know it will be here around next spring, I'll pass. If not, I'm gonna buy this friggin' set for $51 from Amazon.

Thanks for any help.

Casablanca was something like a year later.

It'll be a while. Warner wants to rape consumers for this set for as long as they can. You have cheaper options (importing from Canada or the UK).

When is it available in Canada? I hadn't heard of that release and I don't see it at all at Amazon.ca. Will it be another movie only, no special features, Alliance release where we'll have to wait to see if it's even 1080p and not 1080i before ordering?

The UK one is 3 discs. If you look at the US box set, it's 2 BDs and 2 SDs, and one of those discs is a digital copy. So won't the special features from the UK release, being that they're on SD, be in PAL?

I'd rather have no features and pick it up on the cheap from Canada or wait the 7 months.

I'm honestly in the boat where it's not so much the cost, but the size and all that stuff that I just don't want. Would I rather spend $28 or so on a non-box set and spend the rest of the money on another blu-ray? Sure. But I can live with $51 this once. I just really don't want all that god awful stuff and the giant box on my shelves.

Thanks.

Looks like the Canadian version was removed (I see mention of it on various sites).

Pretty sure the UK will have everything except the 6 hour Documentary since that is on a DVD (Though, it might have the DVD, it will just be region 2).

The 7 month thing is just your guess though. Currently Warner has NO plans of bringing the individual title to retail stores. They will likely keep the boxset around for at least a year. (In the US of course)

Casablanca was only really released because of the Red2Blu promotion. Stuff like The Notebook is still in its CE set only.

UK version special features on Standard Discs will be in PAL only, though, right? If so, I'll just go ahead and buy this stupid box, because I've always wanted my very own copy of the film's budget.

Gizmo, would you like a watch for your lady friend?

Honestly, I'm pretty sure the SD features on the Blu-ray will play just fine in American BD players. I know its really been a title-by-title thing, but it shouldn't be an issue. Pretty sure the previous UK Warner BD titles have SD features that play. The 6 Hour Doc will be on a DVD though (and if the UK set includes that) it WILL be Region 2 so it won't play.

I already have the watch Gonna work on custom cover art later this week as well.

There are 3 discs in the UK set and one of them is probably the blu-ray, one is probably the digital copy, and one the SD, region 2, PAL special features.

There's no way they're all blu ray. So, I'll be missing something. I'd be willing to go with no features for a good, cheap Canadian version, but since that's off the table, it looks like I have to buy the box.

You've never heard of matching his AND her watches?

There are two BDs in the american set and 2 DVDs. I don't think the UK does Digital copies so it will likely be 2 BDs and 1 DVD (6 hour doc).

Amazon.ca had 2 Oz sets listed but pulled the cheaper one a few days. Looks like may have gotten wrong information or Warner pulled it.

As for Watch...pass. All that crap will likely remain in the box. It'll look pretty on my shelf though.

Did you really think you were getting my watch? I have two daughters...the fun of over-paying for this set will be watching them fight over that watch.

I'm done over-thinking it. The UK version with shipping is still going to cost around $30, so for a classic, I'm just going to pay $21 more and be able to watch all of my discs.

I might have passed on this if that Canadian version hadn't been pulled. Maybe I can stack this box on my Ally box and not lose any more room.

Thanks for your help, as always.

Apparently someone who has next weeks Target ad claims their is a Wizard of Oz coming out that will be $37.99. Unknown what exactly it is. Could be a case like with Woodstock where Wal-mart demanded a 'normal' edition to sell. Or it could just be a Casablanca-like case instead. Or nothing.

That at least starts bringing in the realm of being realistic. Truth be told I would love to see the remastered hi-def version. But my kids are grown and aside from the initial viewing chances are I wouldn't watch it again. The previous deluxe box I never watched except for the Over the Rainbow scene when I first picked it up. I'm happy to wait it out, It's a great title to see released but not a must own, at least at those prices.

A poster who claims to have next weeks Target ad on that very Blu forum. We should know soon as the ads typically pop up 5-6 days before. Also says Gremlins is a Target exclusive. I really hope he is right.

Damn, that would be amazingly good news. I hope he didn't just see the regular DVD edition and get confused.

We'll know soon. We do know Warner budged with Woodstock at Wal-Mart and Oz is a big catalog title Target probably wants to sell.

I just posted this exact same info in a new thread, my bad, didn't read this one first...
Oh well, maybe not everyone will see it here either...

I am agreeing with you though, I REALLY hope this rumor is true...maybe that is why there was going to be such a short window from the time Gremlins is actually announced to being widely available? They didn't want the info out there if it was going to be a "surprise" store exclusive....

Wow, I had no idea that the MGM documentary was 6 hours long. That makes this release even more exciting.
