Re: Walt Disney Animated classics 2011 Bluray plans

Ordered Lion King 3D as soon as it was available on amazon. I'm thrilled to read a glowing review of it. Now I'm really anxious to get it. Ordered Beauty & the Beast 3D awhile back too. Can't wait!

Re: Walt Disney Animated classics 2011 Bluray plans

For the main animated Disney films I want to own on Blu-ray they are really taking their time releasing them.

Three coming this year and only one released so far.

101 Dalmations
Aladdin
Atlantis - The Lost Empire
Beauty And The Beast - Done
Brother Bear
The Emperor's New Groove
The Fox And The Hound - Fall
Lady And The Tramp
Lilo And Stitch
Lion King - Fall
Lion King 2 - Fall

The Little Mermaid

So you're counting one movie that's already out and three that will be out in the next few months? Also, are you aware that there are four of their A-list titles in your list? Those used to be released one annually. Disney has actually increased that release schedule to two a year. You should be happy with their commitment to Blu-ray, not whining about it.

As of Beauty And The Beast they are starting to release more of the animated Disney films I wish to own. Three being released this year is good which did take some time to finally happen. Disney has released a few animated films on Blu-ray to date, just very little on my must buy list.

Wanting a studio to release films so you can purchase them is not whining by the way. I do like their their current pace, within five years I hope to see most of these films on Blu-ray.

Re: Walt Disney Animated classics 2011 Bluray plans

I have no interest in 3D conversions. Why would I want to see a film altered from its original version? I'm so tired of Disney changing Lion King. Maybe one day they'll do a special edition that (get ready for it) presents the film as it was originally intended and originally screened in theaters (yeah, I know, shocking concept right?). Added scenes, new animation, IMAX blow up, now 3D. This film has endured more indignity than anything since Magnificent Ambersons.

For that matter, why didn't Disney just sell 35mm prints to all of us to screen at home instead of those godawful VHS tapes and DVDs?

Seriously, if the fact they released an IMAX screening of it bothers you, I suggest spending some time on an actual news site away from movie news and see about getting some perspective on this stuff.

Man you act like they pulled a lucas and have completely disavowed the original theatrical release, and thats not the case both the VHS and DVD as well as the upcoming Blurays present the original theatrical cut of the movies, with the DVD and blu rays giving you the added bonus of having the special editions and if you want the 3D version(and they recognized that not all the fans were big on the special edition cut,as the 3D version is the original theatrical cut of the film, just converted into 3D.

Your post brings does nothing to support your claims of of it being treated with indignity. this was just the type of post i was getting at in my thoughts of the 3D conversion after watching the full movie this past week.
if your going to post such a negative remark atleast back it up with some facts or reasons why you feel that way. and again like i said its not like anyone is forcing you to watch the 3D or special editions, you dont want to watch them then throw on the theatrical cut and be done with it. geeesh

The both of you are missing an important part of the story. Much like Beauty and the Beast, Disney made extensive changes to the animation of The Lion King when it was re-released to IMAX theaters. This goes beyond just inserting new musical numbers. Throughout the movie, portions of the animation were enhanced by computer to make scenes "cleaner", brighter, increase the detail, and make colors pop more. Many of these changes are controversial, because they make the hand-drawn artwork look like CGI.

The "theatrical cut" on the DVD (and presumably the upcoming Blu-ray) is merely the IMAX version of the film minus the new musical numbers. The original artwork and animation are gone, never to be seen again.

I assume they got rid of the "sex" in the sky too. Damn them.
Good thing I saved my laser disc.

Re: Walt Disney Animated classics 2011 Bluray plans

Josh: Thank you for the defense. Minislaw, Amity, and Joe are uninformed.

A "Lucas" is exactly what Disney pulled. The "sex" in the sky has been changed, when Mufasa appears in the sky the animation has been completely altered, several shots of animals during "I just can't wait to be king" have been completely redrawn, and detail has been added throughout the film to make it look "better". I would bet $20 that Minislaw, Amity, and Joe have never seen the film as originally intended. Unless you saw it in theaters or had the VHS or Laserdisc from 1995 then you've never seen it.

From Wiki:
The Platinum Edition of The Lion King was criticized by fans for its false advertising: producer Don Hahn had earlier stated that the film would be in its original 1994 theatrical version, but it was confirmed after release that it was the "digitally enhanced" IMAX version instead, which is slightly different from the original theatrical cut. One of the most noticeable differences is the re-drawn crocodiles in the "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" sequence.[

I said that if it upset you this much, you needed some healthier perspective about what justifies that kind of outrage. I never said a word about any alterations.

Sweet! You can send $20 via Paypal to [email protected]. I'll use that to help pay for The Lion King on Blu-ray.

So I joined the DMC again (did it years and years ago), selected my 4 intro titles and everything. As soon as I finalized everything I went back to try and look at their titles and all I keep getting is a "Site Down" type thing. It really irritates me because I signed up to see the exclusives and whatnot.

So you love the film, but you don't care about its presentation? Wouldn't you like to see it again one day the way you first saw it? I don't have any "outrage", I'm not ready to take to the streets in violent protest. I'm just skipping all these lame money grabs that result in money in Disney's pocket and revision of the original film. They add nothing for us viewers.

I'm sorry YOU don't care, but some people do. I would hate it if your opinion became the consensus and word got 'round to disney that people don't really care to see the films as originally presented; just keep re-coloring, re-animating, and re-touching.

Dude, I've got Crohn's disease. I can't even go to the bathroom without the immediate fear that I'll discover I need medical attention. The most promising class of medications are being discovered as carcinogens and God-fearing Republicans want to halt the stem cell research that has the potential to make a difference in my quality of life. Whether Disney erases sex in the sky of The Lion King doesn't even exist on my continuum of concerns.

Other than "Morning Report," the tweaks cited are really things that probably should have been done originally and were overlooked. They don't affect the artistic merits of the film any more than digitally removing visible wires or reflections of off-set personnel and equipment.

Speaking of money grabs, I look forward to you making good on your $20 bet.

Check out the DVD Clubs section. There's a whole thread dedicated to DMC. Make sure you sign up under one of those codes so you can maximize your enrollments. You should be getting 6 enrollment titles instead of the standard 4.

All this altered version talk has me wishing for the original Arabian Nights number in Aladdin. Fucking PC nonsense. I doubt they'll ever go back to the original. However, I'd settle for a redo on the vocals(which is unlikely). The replacement voice is laughable and sticks out like a sore thumb.

I think this is the only Disney change that really pissed me off. Everything else being talked about is petty in comparison.

damn...I haven't seen Aladdin since...well the 90s. But...did the VHS have that original line about cutting off your ears in the song?

The change had already been made by the time of the original VHS...but Shhhh, don't let MiniSlaw hear or he'll come in here and trumpet as loudly as possible about how changes don't matter and "what's the harm in a little change?"

I fail to see how anything you've said here is helpful to the discourse of this thread about Disney Animated Bluray plans. Take your concerns to the politics forum or better yet a different web site. This is the HD forum and we're talking about Disney BluRay. The discussion is going to go into the minutia of Disney to ensure we get the best quality presentation. That's just the nature of this place and you know it.

Frankly, people like you, the "I don't care" people, need to pipe down. If you don't care then say nothing. Those of us who DO CARE don't want our pleas to Disney to be shouted down by folks who, by their own admission, don't give a fuck.
the tweaks cited are really things that probably should have been done originally
Who decides? What if someone decides that Bambi should have originally had more CGI missle launching fighter jets?

Nope it was cut from the film while it was still in theatres, about half way into the run of the film. not every theatre got a replacement first reel though. so some theatres played the original lyric durring their run and others swapped the first reel out with the edited lyric.
when it hit video it was always the edited lyric though the soundtrack features the original lyric

do you really want to go here buddy boy! i mean really?
Not only have i seen the movie in theatres durring its original theatrical run, I saw it at the El cap at the world premiere. The changes in animation that were done for dvd special edition have been undone for the 3D bluray release, it is the true theatrical cut. I like how YOU who havent seen the 3D version of the movie yet have the gull to tell me that ive never seen the original theatrical cut in theatres. Not only have i seen it but i owned the vhs, the laser disc, the dvd as well. and and i stand by what i said the movie looked great last monday night in 3D. I trust my own eyes more than i trust you or josh.

And dont tell me i dont care about presentation, I was a union projectionist at the most famous theatre in the world for over a decade. Presentation is very important to me.
