The classic Disney films, like the best fairy tales, are successful both as art and because some of their story elements often resonate deeply in human experience.

Dumbo is a good example. My late mother found it endearing and moving, but once her own mother died, she was unable to watch the film because of the scene where Dumbo's mother is caged and Dumbo is separated from her. And I don't mean she could change the channel and then come back to the film. She literally could not watch it anymore.

And forget about the artistry. Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi...the animators on these films, which IMO represent the studio at the peak of its powers, did stuff with pencils that not been equaled in animation. Ever. This is, of course, something one appreciates as an older film fan rather than as a child. The character animation in these films is just flat out brilliant, miraculously good. I sit in astonishment when I watch it now.

That scene tormented me as a child, and I avoided re-watching the film for probably 20 years before revisiting it last year. It's maybe even more upsetting now to me. And to this day, I get sad just thinking about the elephants at the zoo. Every time I go there, part of me wants to find some way of liberating them.

I think living in the era of CGI animation has actually sharpened my appreciation and admiration for what they did. I just grew up taking it for granted that animators were out there, doing all this rather easily. I mean, I knew I couldn't do it, but I assumed it was relatively easy for people who knew what they were doing. Now, though, I see just how special their work truly was, especially since in many cases they were the pioneers in their field inventing the templates on which their successors would build.

I couldn't find a thread on this BD so....I'm just asking in general here. I bought Monster's Inc on BD when it came out, I got in contact w/ movierewards to get my points...but never inquired about getting a Digital Copy code. I dunno why I never thought about doing that but I didn't. Do I contact movierewards about that or whom exactly?

Hope Lion King gets some good extras for its BD release - also I wonder why Dumbo has taken so long coming to the US (after Mexico/UK/Europe)?
I've pre ordered Dumbo BTW - can't wait!

There aren't really too many more that I want. Lion King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan are about all that's left. I'd like Robin Hood, but probably won't happen.

?? I'd say there's about a 100% chance it'll come out, in fact I'm pretty sure it was rumored for next year. Or were you talking about just not picking it up? The Disney machine hooked me in, of their 50 animated features I'm probably good for 25-30.

Its anniversary is just two year from now. I'd suspect that's when we're likeliest to get it on Blu-ray. I figure the "Most Wanted Edition" DVD release is evidence that Disney considers it a viable catalog title, as they could have simply let the initial Gold Collection release be its sole DVD existence.

As for the total Disney catalog, I have to say that for the longest time I felt I wasn't into Disney very much at all. But the truth is, I frequently find myself drawn to their releases. Some of them are bona fide classics I feel need to be represented in my library. Some are personal favorites I enjoy even though they're not on the same level as others. I'm still not big on Mickey Mouse and his assorted characters, and I have little interest in virtually any of the DTV sequels. When I stand back and look at their canon, though, I see a lot of terrific animated films that make me feel silly for have once felt I had "outgrown" Disney.

Aside from the obvious releases (i.e. Lion King, Aladdin, Little Mermaid) the ones I REALLY want on BD are Hercules and Rescuers Down Under. Why? Because neither of those were given very good transfers on DVD. And they both NEED some good special features.

Aside from those 2 the others I'd really like would be Great Mouse Detective, Mulan and Hunchback of Notre Dame

I really wish they put out some of their tv movies from the 80s and 90s as well as some of their newer live action movies on blu-ray....like B.R.A.T. Patrol, Fuzzbucket, Big Green, The absent minded professor movies with Harry Anderson, and so many others, but it would probably be a long shot in the dark for those to come out.

Aside from Lion King, I only want Aladdin and Mulan (that I can think of). Just don't see much replay value to many of these films, especially with no children.

What the hell difference does not having children make as to whether you enjoy these movies or want to own them? We don't have children; are we breaking some kind of rule by having numerous animated features in our library? Are we bad grown-ups? I don't give a damn what you or anyone else owns, but your reasoning seems like little more than online posturing.

Yeah, my kids were young in the late 90s, so I hold a special place for the Disney movies that I saw in the theater with them like Pocahontas, Mulan, Tarzan, Hercules and Hunchback. Hopefully Disney will give these titles some respect and release them on blu-ray.

I might wait and see what the UK Lion King is like. Not being able to access the Classic DVD Bonus features straight from the menu (is that what Virtual Vault is?) sounds crap.
I really want to see Lion King in HD though.

I have a quick question for you all right now. I was at my local Walmart last night and the store is going thru a remodel right now. Well i guess during the remodel they found a lone copy of Lady and the Tramp 50th Anniversary Platinum dvd under one of the shelves they were moving around. They stuck the dvd back on dvd shelf with the rest of the dvd's and thats where i came across it. The dvd aside from some wear to the corners of the slipcover is still brand new sealed so i went ahead and bought it. It still rang up for $19.96. My question is, since there's a bluray release coming for Lady and the Tramp next year should i just return the dvd and hold off for the bluray release? Or should i hold on to the dvd and maybe try to sell it? I checked ebay but it seems to be overrun with fake copies. I'm thinking about just returning it and holding off for the bluray release but what would you guys do?

I just got home from watching a screening of Lion King 3D tonight in Hollywood. And it looked absolutely amazing, you might remember in the past i mentioned that i had been lucky enough to see part of it a while back when real D showed it as part of a demo reel(specificly the wildebeast stampeed)
well tonight i got to sit in on the first media screening of the full movie in 3D and it was awesome first off, its the theatrical cut of the movie, not the special edition so those of you who are not fans of Morning report will be happy with that info. secondly the movie just looks amazing, complaints of 3d allways being to dark, were not really a factor in this screening as the projectors xeno bulb was used to its full 10 k lumens. so inspite of the 3D glasses it was a nice bright picture, the colors were the nice bright pastel colors that they always have been for I just cant wait to be king, while the elephant grave yard and battle of pride rock scenes were more understated and appropriately muted.

there were some scenes that just really jumped out to me in terms of being stand outs among a overall excellent presentation.

The Elephant Grave yard scene, and the fog effects in 3D really envelop you and help with the creepy errieness of the scene.
Be prepared looked amazing as well.
The Circle of Life had a level depth to the picture that really made my jaw drop at how stunning it looked.
And of course the scene i mentioned a while back in other threads, The wildbeast stampeed was just wow.
Hakuna Matatta was another highlight as was Can you feel the love tonight.
again adding on with both of those a nice field of depth, and again with out muting the very beautiful color scheme.

The Battle for Pride Rock was just as impressive as the wildebeast scene was for me as well. when Scar leaps at the audience it really delivered a nice effect that caused several in the rows in front of me to duck a bit lol.

And finally the scene where Rafiki shows Simba where to find Mufasa, was very well dones as well, and when mufasa forms in the clouds it really works.


I cant wait to have the 3D bluray of this, and I will happily pay to see it again at the El cap when it opens up on sept 3rd.

those of you who will undoubtly complain about 3D to begin with, thats fine, no one is making you watch it in 3D disney is providing you with a 2D version, so rather than sit there and grumble and complain, be happy you get a 2D version to watch while those who enjoy 3D can watch this beautiful movie in a great 3D release.

I'm all for a 3D version being released if there is a demand for it and it's done well. As you said, as long as there's a 2D release, as I'm sure there will be, I'm fine with it.

My only concern involves the DMR coupons. Usually, they only release them for the pricier combo packs, and if they stuck to the pattern here, it would be for the 3D release in this case. Frankly, it would lessen my enthusiasm in that case, since I really don't have a desire to buy a 3D disc that:

A: I don't own all the equipment for (My PS3 is 3D capable, but my TV is not).

B: I more than likely wouldn't use if I DID have 3D capable equipment.

I do see what you are saying, but all retail sold 3d bds have a 2D version included. and with the the 8.00 off coupon the 3D combo pack is cheaper than what the 2D only release will be.
and in most instances you can use the coupon on the 2D only release as well, even if it only says 3D on the coupon.

To be fair, they wouldn't have a screening with subpar conditions unlike a lot of theaters.

Is this getting a limited theatrical re-release in 3D?

Yes it is getting a release theatrically El cap will be playing it for one month starting on Sept 3rd(ish)
and a nationwide 2 week limited engagement (like the toy story 3d double feature) starting sept 16(ish)
