Yeah, I guess you're right, but I'd just say 'get a life' to those that take this way too seriously... Saying 'If it doesn't have 'insert person's personal vision here' then 'no ticket' is just kinda nutso... Go or don't go. No director is going to make the movie that is in your head.

I for one will be satisfied if as they say that this is an alternate dimension version of all of the characters, while still being 'close'. Who cares if one person is older or younger and who knows if they 'will' be together for 20 years, remember, this is an alternate universe supposedly.

New Trek and let it be at that. Leave the fan boy bitching at home until you have something to bitch about.
So because I am a long time Trek Fan (30 years plus) I should just be happy because they are again trying to breathe new life into the franchise that Paramount has been milking ever since TNG was a hit?
They should have given at least a five year rest.

Yes, that's right you (and I - Trek fan for 25 years) are owed nothing. The Trek you love is canon and unalterable. You need to learn how to deal with change, which is what life is all about. I can't imagine anything that they can make that would truly please either of us, without the same cast, writers, etc...

To some like me, who didn't give Enterprise the time of day, it HAS had a long rest.

I am only 33, so I haven't been a Trekkie as long as you but I'm still in pretty deep. The "franchise fatigue" excuse is getting really tiresome. The fourth season of Enterprise is proof positive that the "fatigue" was really only on the part of TPTB.

Do you really think that something like Trek universe needs rest? It needs only to be given a fresh perspective every few years. If Abrams does hit a homerun here, I still don't want him running it into the ground for the next ten years.

I've read many, many official Trek novels that show far better insight into, not only the characters, but the way the Trek-verse ticks overall. And I've even read a few fanfics that put some episodes to shame. All Paramount needs to do is look outside the usual good-ole-boys network of writers and producers to get something fresh and able to re-vitalize their revenue stream.

I think that's one of the problems with Trek right there... the novels, which aren't canonical with the series and regarded as little more than merchandising like T-shirts by the greater Trek/Paramount hierarchy, are generally much more interesting than anything that gets put to film.

Hmm, his character's name is Nero, which suggests to me that Romulans may be involved.

Spoiler:
This may mean the rumors about Romulans going back in time and erasing Kirk from the timeline are true.

Every update I hear about this movie I am excited about. This may be an opening night adventure for me (I am not dressing up though).

Well, Bana is good... But I guess this means the rumored talks with Russell Crowe as the villian failed... just like the rumored talks with Matt Damon as Kirk failed...

I was really hoping to get some A-List stars into Trek to help fuel the reboot hype. But I guess they'll do fine without them; they always have...

More casting news:

Simon Pegg of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead cast as Scotty.

Hmmm.....

Not sure about this yet, was really hoping for Paul McGillion to get this.

That was about my reaction. Here's another article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7041249.stm

He's got a bit of convincing to do I think. I like him and all, but I just can not picture him as Scotty. At all.

Then again, I thought the same of Michael Keaton and Batman, and I enjoyed him in the role.

Off topic, I think Keaton has become the iconic "I thought this person would be horrible for the role, but..." guy.

Simon Pegg sounds like a soilid choice for Scotty. I don't know about John Cho as Sulu though. When I see his face, I keep thinking of Harold from Harold and Kumar.

I was hoping the actor who plays Desmond on LOST would somehow get the Scotty role. I think he would have been great.

I don't know why they need to cast a Korean actor as a Japanese character. Then again, it doesn't seem to have bothered viewers of Heroes with James Kyson Lee playing Ando.

Simon Pegg pretty much means I will see it opening day. The idea of John Cho in this does not sit nearly as well with me and for the most part I like the other stuff he has done.

This idea is genius because it will build millions of dollars from younger kids. People that remember Start Trek in the 60s have to be 50s-60s now not counting those who like TNG. This pretty much secures the franchise will be around for another 20 or so years.

Yes, and remember the adding of Walter Koenig in Season 2 of TOS had LESS to do with having a Russian aboard than it did with the success of THE MONKEES at the time. (Despite what Roddenberry said in latter years.)
