To take it and apply it in a way that felt genuinely thrilling."
While Abrams said he would also like to retain die-hard fans of the Star Trek universe (and was sure to include a dedicated “Trekker” on his writing staff) he didn’t want the fans’ expectations to influence his vision for the upcoming film. “You can't really make a movie for them,” he said. “As soon as you start to guess what you think they are going to want to see, you're in trouble. Err, no. (here's a hint, her uniform is red like the poster)

Paramount needs to get this movie out there for people to see. Trek has not exactly proven a Box Office Draw to mainstream or even fan audiences in the last 10 years.

I think it was a mistake to postpone this from Christmas to Summer 2009.
I actually have to disagree Insurrection and Nemesis were both good Trek films IMO. I'm still puzzled why Nemesis was such a box office dud. Although I noticed the budget for the TNG films kept going up with each movie.
It does look like according to IMDB the last Trek film that was considered a "Hit" was First Contact with a $92M gross.....so around 12 years now.

Nemesis was awful, there was very little I enjoyed about it.

I think that's a load of crap. Bryan Singer showed some very polished clips of "XMen 2" after only a few weeks of filming. Peter Jackson showed clips of "King Kong" with a lot of the effects missing.

Four new character posters from JJ Abrams‘ Star Trek have been revealed at VegasCon 08. The four posters, which like the Comic Con posters, combine to form the Star Trek delta emblem. Clockwise we have John Cho as Sulu, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Chekov and Karl Urban as McCoy.

I still think they are going to do some better marketing than this to get newbies in the theater.
Trek has a bad name with most mainstream audiences. Marketing has to change that.

That teaser back in December was a fine start.
If only J.J. knew how to market a film....
