Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012
The problem is that Lucas left a huge part of the story on the board for the EU to cover in.
1.) Dooku gets furious over his old padawan's death and blames the Jedi Order for only sending two Jedi into that mess on Naboo, even going to the Senate with his complaints. No one helps him. He leaves the Jedi order and even contemplates tracking down the missing Sith Lord himself.
2.) Sidious actually contacts him and Dooku, who is so angry with the Jedi/Senate, gets convinced that he needs to take things on himself to fix everything wrong in the galaxy. (Remember in Ep2 Dooku tries to rationalize to Obi-Wan that his evil actions against the Republic are ok because a Sith Lord is actually manipulating them via the senate. He wants to kill Sidious and control everything his way at this point, hence trying to get Obi-wan's help)
3.) Master Syfo-Dyas, who is an member of the Jedi Council and friend of Dooku, either orders the clones as requested by Dooku and then is betrayed and killed to cover it up, or he is betrayed and killed and Dooku uses his name to order the clones.
4.) Dooku recruits Jango as Clone template as requested by Sidious.
The main problem is the movies paint Dooku as a 'clone' of Sidious, right down to the force lightning. His 'character' is lost as nothing more than a throwaway to bridge a spot in the movies, a physical threat, between Maul's death and Sidious finally making himself known.
Personally, I wish Dooku was either in EP1 or Maul had not died. As is, it's hard to watch the movies and understand why Dooku would become a Sith directly after Qui-gon's death at the hands of one. Remember he still speaks very highly of Qui-Gon in the movie.
The alternative is that you could have Anakin witness Maul kill Qui-Gon in Ep.1, cut off Anakin's hand in Ep.2, and have a final memorable confrontation with Anakin in Ep.3. This would have mirrored Luke seeing Obi-wan killed by Vader(ANH), getting hand cut off by Vader (TESB), and having a final memorable confrontation. (ROTJ)
Instead we got a bunch of characters with little buildup/story. (MAul/Dooku/Grevious)

I see the Star Wars discourse hasn't changed one bit. A whopping 14 pages of bitching and moaning over raped childhoods. You'd think people who had no interest in this wouldn't spend 14 pages discussing, or bitching, about it. Jesus, you people need to let go and move on, at least those of you who have nothing but disdain anytime Star Wars or George Lucas is mentioned.
For what it's worth, I have no interest in this or the other prequels. I defended them for too long. There's a lot to like in them, but there's just as much to dislike. I have them simply for completion's sake, and I'll watch my favorite sequences from them every now and then. But that's about it.
Now if the original trilogy is re-released in 3D, I'll be there.

I have no plans to see this but I am interested in seeing how this does. I have a number of nephews that really seem to be into the clone wars stuff so even though my age group probably won't see it in masses I wonder if there is enough of a market with the younger audience.

There's only been nine pages of bitching and moaning by my count.

The forum's default is to show only 25 posts per page, which would split the 330 posts that had existed at the point over 14 pages.
You can change this default in options under "Number of Posts to Show Per Page" to a custom number, which you probably did in the past. If you had set it to 40 posts/page, that would show 9 pages for this thread.

It would've been better for him to say "a whopping 330 posts..." since the page count can vary from person to person depending on their settings.

I'm of the opinion that Phantom Menace isn't going to do well, but Titanic is...I saw the 2D trailer in IMAX before Mission Impossible, and I'm actually excited about seeing it again - even though I've probably watched it a dozen times.
Oh, and I still think George has no intention of releasing the Original Trilogy in IMAX 3D, but every intention of releasing all three prequels. Time will tell if I'm spot-on.

So when other people with "no interest" in it discuss it, they need to move on, but when you do it, it's ok?
I can also assure you that this is my last post in this thread. If you'd like to continue burning Lucas in effigy, be my guest. I just find it utterly amazing that people still bitch about this subject. It's as bad as the people who won't let Michael Jackson rest in peace. In fact it's even worse, because this has been going on for a decade.
Thanks, but I'm on the noob settings of 25 posts per page. I went through and added it up, and a total of approx. 9 of those 14 pages were spent bitching and moaning about all things Lucas and Star Wars. The other five pages are made up of random off-topic discussion.
Oh well, have it.

Secondly, you specifically called out people for discussing the film, not just whining or bitching about it. To whit:
Finally, complaining about where the discussion has lead does nothing but further sidetrack the discussion. People have a right to comment on this thread even if they have no interest in the film, or even actively hate it. Complaining about the complainers doesn't do anything but just make the discussion more meta. If you had something actually worthwhile to contribute to the thread instead of dissing the contributions already made, maybe the discussion would've gone somewhere you would've found interesting. Instead, it went somewhere you are preemptively deciding you don't want to engage in anymore.

Terrell,
Whenever a movie is re-released in any form (SE, 3-D, etc.) I'm interested in hearing from the fans who would and would not see it. Just for the record, I remember posting in Indy Jones Crystal Thread that I had no intention of seeing that movie. There was a thread for Ghostbusters 3 some time ago, and said I would never see that either. I'll have to go through my post history, but I have posted my opinions in alot of movie threads of sequels or re-releases that I thought was ridiculous.
The reason Star Wars gets more pages in a thread is because there are more fans of this series then most movie series. Whether they are OT fans, Saga fans, Star Wars 77 fans, you are going to get a wide range of opinions simply because the series has changed so much since 1977.

The only Dooku back story we get comes from a 3 minute conversation with Obi-Wan? Shouldn't Dooku have been used in Ep 1 to make his fall and death actually mean something? Even him being on the council and having ONE conversation with Qui-Gon in Ep 1 would have given us more then the 3 minute conversation in Ep 2.

That 3 minute conversation justifies an action figure, which leads to a fleshed out backstory in novel form, maybe a comic or two, toy lightsaber, etc. Get the picture?

Yeah, I know but just an establishing shot of him in Ep 1 on the Jedi Council and some sort of conversation with Qui-Gon wouldn't have ruined his backstory and would have made the movies make more sense and still left a lot of material for the extended universe.

That would have worked, same with G.G. I had no idea who these two really was till later in the movie (Dooku). I had no idea who GG was and going by the 3rd movie I still did not.

Re: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace...in 3-D for 2012
Im very excited about seeing this. I was a Star Wars kid from the 80s. I was excited as all hell for the Prequels. I thought they were awesome Star Wars movies when they came out and i think they are awesome Star Wars movies now. I wasn't dissappointed by them. I don't find them annoying. I certainly don't find them confusing as some do. They certainly have some flaws. But nothing that particularly hurts them.
So put me in the Im a fan column. I get bored by all the bashing as well.
Star Wars: The only argument were reasonable and well-thought out discussion is always trumped by someone saying "Nah, it just sucks"

I actually don't like 3D at all. But I am excited to see what this looks like.
