Too much Christina Hendricks.
OK no really, there wasn't much I would have changed. Maybe some of the "building the relationship" scenes could have taken a bit off the top, but that's more of a nitpick than a complaint.

Wait a sec....did Tarantino really put this on his "Nice try" list? Some people on DVD Talk do know how big a QT fan I am but who the fuck does he think he is with a comment like that? I mean yes, I talk shit about films all the time but if I was famous.....ahhh fuck it, there is going to be no easy way to say it without some fucking idiot replying with "well, blah blah blah blah fucking blah".
lol just something about picturing QT saying "nice try" really set me off.

I didn't like Drive admittedly but even if I had there's no way it was better than anything Tarantino has done in my opinion. Pulp Fiction and especially Jackie Brown are both entirely better films than this. I don't really understand all the Drive fans attacking Tarantino for not caring for the film. It's his opinion and just because it doesn't match with yours doesn't dismiss him as a great filmmaker. I give Drive some credit in that it was a well made film but it just didn't work for me in a lot of ways.

What did I not care for... well, as stated already, it's a damn good film, so moments I disagree with tend to get lost in the whole experience. Nothing juts out like a sore thumb. It may be a sin to say in a film as deliberate and stylish as this, but there were a couple of times I thought the treatment of a scene diminished the film. While it was interesting to have the women sit and watch while Driver beats the man up at the strip club, I doubt they'd have watched so calmly, like they're in a tableau vivant. It's not a Peter Greenaway flick. Also, while it's easy to accept that it's indicative of how invested Driver is in his clients and how far he's willing to go in a job, it would have been nice to see if his clients escaped capture after the opening getaway. I realize that it's part of the character development, and one can easily assume they got away with it because Driver suffers no reprisal, but I think it would have been more satisfying.
I'm also in agreement that Tarantino's films are for the most part better than Drive, but that doesn't lessen the film. Tarantino's an award-winning and successful filmmaker with a large following, so naturally many of his films are going to be deemed better than others.

at the risk of turning this into a "this film is better than _____ ramblethon", I will say it was better than a number of QT films, and I like QT.
Better than-
Death Proof
Kill Bills
Maybe better than, given time-
Inglorious Basterds
Reservoir Dogs
Jackie Brown
Not better than-
Pulp Fiction

Sat down with this over the weekend, expecting to be blown away due to all the "OMFG BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!" hype. Thought it was good, and certainly an effective thriller...but it's way overrated on the Internets.
But yeah, it's better than a lot of the movies Tarantino has on his "Best of 2011" list, but hey who cares? It's his list.

It's probably on there due to its similarity to 1978's The Driver, which is one of QT's favorite films.

My thoughts exactly. I enjoyed it, but the main character is so distant and socially withdrawn that I found it hard to care about him.

Liked it but wanted to love it. What was up with the fucking smiling in this film? Is that how the Gosling character (and yes, I would write his name but for the life of me I didn't catch it) showed emotion. Everytime someone would talk to him all he did was fucking smile. I've seen baboons with better social skills. Then, when I see the violence he would inflict on others, that made the smiling even creepier. Maybe thats the point. lol

Same as some of you.
Watched the trailer when it was released, thought it wasn't interesting enough for me. I thought I would probably watch it at home, since I'm a Ryan Gosling fan. I just recently watched Blue Valentines, he's great there, and last year saw him in theaters in "Crazy, Stupid, Love", he was great there too.
So, I don't visit movie forums, I only check this forum from time to time. But my feeling from "the internet" was that everyone was hyping this movie. OMG! Blah! Blah. A least in this forum you read references to this movie in almost every thread.
So I watched it last weekend and thought it was just OK. It had its moments but I was expecting something more. Gosling was just OK too.
"Nice try".

If Gosling is emotionless then stay away from Le Samourai
http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/re...-samourai/1795
Like Pickpocket's titular thief, Le Samouraď's hitman Jef Costello (Alain Delon) is a man governed by method,
the meticulous execution of his work being the core facet of his character.
Calmly and carefully choosing the right key from an enormous key ring to steal a car in broad daylight, or deliberately evading the cops who are trailing him by circuitously navigating the Parisian subways, Jef is a man for whom life is but a series of tasks to be carried out with purposeful efficiency,
his every mechanical movement and blank-eyed stare conveying the fact that an adherence to ritual, to technique, is what defines him. However, unlike Bresson's petty crook, Jean-Pierre Melville's murderer derives no spiritual transcendence from the process of his vocation; his is an existential existence in which the rigorously defined rules that guide his behavior simply prevent him from drifting off into a lethal void of purposelessness.

Anyway, that was my favorite scene of the movie--For obvious reasons.
BTW, forget the QT bashing. The critic/reviewer that really shocked me with Drive's absence in a "Best-of" list was Kim Morgan. Since she loves cars, silent heroes and gritty flicks (Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia is one of her most favorites) it should've been a no-brainer for her to love this one. But the movie isn't anywhere to be seen in her Best of 2011 list(!)

Yeah, I can't say I'm offended that Quentin Tarantino didn't like it enough to put it in his Top 11 (which is actually a Top 12... if you have a tie, that counts as two, not one.)
Even though it's my favourite film of the year, I respect that there are a lot of people who clearly don't (or won't ever) feel the same way. I'll say this, though... since Inglourious Basterds and Drive share one commonality...
I'd say Refn's portrayal of such a scene was superior.
Just my opinion, of course.

I think the seemingly distant and anti-social behavior of the main character is crucial to the film. He is distant because social interaction doesn't matter to him, only being in control of his world does. He likes his life to be similar to how he drives cars, where he is in total control. Once he loosens up and starts being more social with the girl and the family next door and then tries to help them out, he loses control of his world and that's when bad things which he can't control start to happen.
