Truly one of the dumbest ideas for a movie....ever.

The fact that this was made shows how little Hollywood thinks of movie goers. The "They'll watch anything" mentality is alive and well in Hollywood.

Hopefully the idiots of America (and other countries) will be just smart enough to know terrible when they see it and refuse to pay to see this garbage.
Movie reivews from someone that hasn't watched the movie are very helpful. Thanks!

It wouldn't be Movie Talk if you didn't have snarky comments from people who didn't see or have no interest in watching the movie.

This is very much like a Michael Bay summer blockbuster, but with heart and an outlook that everyone can make a difference, regardless of perceived limitations.

All I can say, even with the trappings of the Battleship game (the aliens' artillery looking like Battleship pegs), and later the game grid comes into play rather nearly, it was a fun movie to root for the humans in spite of overwhelming odds and firepower.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.
Wow, that's pretty surprising. I might have to check it out.

^^^ I agree with most of Patman's review except for Taylor Kitsch. He just didn't work for me as the lead of Battleship.

Ah yeah I didn't realize the artillery looked like pegs, that was a nice touch, looking back. During the beginning with the antics of the scientists at the satellite station it was beginning to look like it would go into overly comedic territory, but then one of them got killed and the other dude was balanced out by Brooklyn Decker and the Army guy.

Rihanna was pretty bad though.

Not that anyone here likes Michelle Rodriguez, but I think she came across as a bad impersonation of her. Tough badass tom boyish chick. What casting director thought she was perfect for this part?

Yeah and that site that has all of her lines makes it seem even more laughable. Her longest line delivery was when she was talking about her dad for 3 sentences.

Alexander Skarsgard was pretty wooden when he was yelling at his brother, but his character was good.

Also, Taylor Kitsch enters the navy at 26 and is all of a sudden a commanding officer and a star soccer player? Not sure how much time passed so it's possible it could have been a few years but still...

Yeah, there must have been some significant footage cut from the film...why hire Peter MacNicol if you're going to give him a minute of dialogue?

Have standards. They're good for you.
I'm with you guys. I didn't even bother watching the Transformers movies so why would I want to watch an even shittier knockoff of them? I haven't heard anyone say they were highly anticipating this movie, and virtually no one seems to be walking out of the theater raving about how great it was. The best reaction it's generated so far seems to be "it wasn't that bad" - what kind of endorsement is that?

"It was a lot of fun!"

Is that a usable enough pull-quote, Eddie Egan?

It's not a knockoff of TRANSFORMERS...it's closer to INDEPENDENCE DAY. And it's better than any of the TRANSFORMERS movies, easily. You can actually follow/understand what's happening in the big action sequences of BATTLESHIP.

Saw this today with my wife and our friend. We all liked it. It was cheesy fun and an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.

Exactly...I mean the plot for Battleship isn't any more ridiculous than the one for The Avengers - they're both about alien invasions - but for some reason Battleship's plot is considered a cheesy ripoff, and The Avengers is considered the holy grail of summer movies. I guess guys running around in tights killing the aliens is much more 'realistic' than the Navy doing it.

Spoiler:
I'm being facetious - The Avengers is much better scripted/acted, but they AREN'T really that different plot-wise

Re: Battleship (Berg, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

It was like a Sy Fy original movie with a Big budget.
Very cliche ridden. Main character is a rebel who needs to be softened up. Girlfriend is Generals Daughter.
Brother is in military. Death happens to motivate main character into changing.

Girlfriend part wasn't needed and the guy with the fake legs was horrible.
EFX were fun.

Well Michael Bay is, but the rest is fine. But there's a big difference between dumb fun and just plain dumb. Battleship appears to be firmly entrenched in the later camp. But who knows, maybe I've severely misjudged it. Maybe every trailer, the HBO EPK featurette I saw, and practically every review I've come across, is just way off base. I kind of doubt it, but who knows. In any case, my opinion shouldn't diminish your enjoyment of it.

I was actually thinking this the other day...it's better than a Sy Fy movie, but it DOES play like a first episode of a new TV series. I kept thinking if the same story was on TV, people would be raving about it...as a theatrical film though, the acting isn't quite up to par.
