I'm still waiting for the SyFy original rendition of Family Game Night to correspond with that spoof poster going around the intertubes.
"The night started with Life, but ended with Uno.", I picture it as a riff on Funny Games.

I seriousily thought some hip hamsters would show up half way through the movie and start the party jumping

it was vastly superior to the dumb as dirt 'Battle: LA'

Well Michael Bay is, but the rest is fine. But there's a big difference between dumb fun and just plain dumb. Battleship appears to be firmly entrenched in the later camp. But who knows, maybe I've severely misjudged it. Maybe every trailer, the HBO EPK featurette I saw, and practically every review I've come across, is just way off base. I kind of doubt it, but who knows. In any case, my opinion shouldn't diminish your enjoyment of it.

My opinion was about how stupid it looked. I think I'm entitled to comment to that extent. Are you really going to claim that you don't make judgements about films after seeing trailers, EPK material, reading reviews, or hearing the opinions of your friends and family who have seen it? Give me a break.

And 11 years later I finally got around to watching this one. (I found the Blu Ray at the Dollar Tree, so, why not?)
I was genuinely surprised by how much fun Battleship was. Yeah, it was a bomb in the U.S. (a low level hit in the rest of the world), but it's a fun movie. What worked for me was that it was a suspenseful Naval battle movie and an alien invasion movie rolled into one. While the characters were all fairly standard issue, what they did with them in terms of fitting them into the overall plot was good.
The battle scenes with the ships vs the aliens were actually really well done and fairly exciting - very entertaining.
It's not a great movie, but it is fun and entertaining, and, in the end, that's what I want out of a movie like this.
3.5/5
