Bold, but based on the early reviews on the 17 minutes, seems like it was a pretty much a hit with everyone.

The fact that it is going to do less then the avengers has nothing to do with it being too sci-fi for the ladies.

Its not expected to do as well as those movies, especially the first two. Release Date/and being a unknown marvel property as being two of the huge reasons.

Wouldn't be funny if this actually surpassed the Avengers? (No, I don't expect that to happen.)

Stop and think about it: With any movie based on an existing source, there is a "barrier to entry" for people who are not familiar with the source.

Even though GotG is based on a comic, it is far enough on the "obscure" side that it really won't have much stigma to it. I'm not saying that "comic stigma" is bad, but the marketing for this is pushing it past that barrier and possibly opening it up to audiences who would have otherwise dismissed it.

Exactly. I can't imagine Marvel is expecting $200+ million domestic for this, and probably something far more in line with Captain American and Thor. If they eclipse that and it reviews high, they'll be happy. Hardly a commercial failure if it doesn't hit Iron Man numbers.

don't get me wrong, I'm hoping it does well, but I just think it skews a bit too sci-fi for general audiences. we'll see.

I doubt anyone is expecting it to do near as well as the Avengers. That's a straw man argument.

First you said it was too sci-fi for women, and now you change it to too sci-fi for general audiences. Which is it? The general audience isn't only women.

The general audience loves Star Wars type sci-fi, which is what GOTG is. All the Asgardian stuff in Thor is pretty sci-fi too. I imagine GOTG will do at least as well as Thor has.

Nobody expects it to pull Iron Man or Avengers numbers. Just because it doesn't pull those numbers doesn't mean it will be a failure. That's just nonsense.

Probably because they are more like Star Wars than classic Trek.

I think this will be Marvel's first film to fail hitting the $100m mark. I think it looks mostly fun, and the geek fanbase sure is excited, but the response I've been hearing from the average filmgoer is that it looks weak. I can see this one opening to under $40m and maybe limping past $100m, but not much more than that.

of course it won't do as well as those other movies. this is a completely new franchise that hardly anyone knows about. and to say it will be a commercial failure when comparing it to 2 of the 3 highest grossing Marvel movies in the MCU is a pretty ridiculous notion.

you do not know what you speak. this is tracking for a $60 million opening weekend, and potentially upward of that. if it does just $60 million, it'll easily surpass $100 million in less than 2 weeks. i am pretty sure Marvel would be ecstatic to get Thor/CA 1st movie box office numbers from this new and unproven franchise.

I think the problem with this statement is "Star Wars type sci-fi" pretty much consists of Star Wars.

But maybe after this it will consist of Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy.

It also consists of many years of space opera comics and prose for decades before Lucas even thought about it, to say nothing of anime and manga. The problem is that Star Wars was basically it's first cinematic success, and pretty much everything since then has tried to emulate that. Though there is Serenity.

Yes, now that it's become Star Wars in drag with a dollop of Abrams TV soap opera.

What? My brother's girlfriend is a huge Trekkie. And I've met female Trek fans, hell, look at video footage of a con and you'll see plenty of them. These movie aren't just for geeky internet fans anymore, the mainstream has clearly taken to them for the moment, and Marvel will ride that gravy train all the way.

It's kind of stretch calling SW sci-fi.

ST was pretty Sci-fi before it went the the SW route.

I think 150m domestic and 450+ worldwide would be decent bars for success. hopefully it'll do more!
