I must admit the Real-D / Dolby Atmos version of the movie was fun, but nothing really prepared me for the IMAX experience - well shit me a river... the image was brighter (and the 3D had more pop), the use of the full screen scenes was used far more effectively than 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' - by a mile. On the negative side the surrounds only being two channel didn't really convey the wildness of the 7.1 mix with the extra rear sound sources - oh well, can't have it all can we?

I try to avoid Read-D 3D because of the dark picture. As you said, IMAX is a much better presentation.

Now if I can get an IMAX theater w/Dolby Atmos I might have to move into the theater

Weird. My Cinemark isn't dark with their 3D. I saw Guardians in 2D first and then 3D. They both looked alike with the brightness.

How is their 3D compared to IMAX 3D?

I haven't done 3D with IMAX. Does the difference make the technology hit its maximum quality for the format or what? I was under the impression that the visual effect of the format for a movie was pretty much the same in whatever theater medium you saw it in, no? With some minor difference with brightness, maybe? Putting aside as to what the quality of the 3D may be for any specific film.

I've only done IMAX for the films that did use the format. So TDKR, TDK, MI5, and I think that's it for me.

GOTG wasn't filmed in IMAX, but there are scenes where the aspect ratio shifts just for IMAX, and it's reportedly the medium it looks best in (I say reportedly, because I haven't personally seen it in IMAX)

to me, the IMAX DMR'd full screen scenes, not only looked brighter but also sharper. I generally favor seeing movies in Real-D/Dolby Atmos because in respect to the latter, the sound is far and away superior to IMAX 5.0 sound, but I have to admit the IMAX presentation of 'Guardians' was just flat out exhilarating.

word is that IMAX is shifting and improving it's sound format to include side channels and over head sound sourcing as well.

My Other Self

I saw it today (finally) in our IMAX theater downtown and although the visuals were stunning in 3D, I was really let down by the sound. I honestly think its this particular theater, though, as I've seen other films in IMAX at other venues and was blown away by the entire experience.

A shame Gump is opening next weekend because I'd like to see this again at the Metreon in San Francisco to see how great the sound mix really is.
