I thought the spin off movies released between the trilogy films were intending to focus on characters from the new trilogy - ie, how Marvel is currently running their Phases.

Of course not, the studio is going to lazily cash in on fan favorites instead of creating exciting new content. Gotta milk that cow, baby. We'll get spin offs featuring Boba Fett, Han Solo, and Yoda.

Marvel has released the Avengers after 4 years of standalone movies, if you count Iron Man as their starting point, and the Avengers 2 three years after the original. That gives more time in between for solo outings by some characters. Also, the Marvel Phases lends itself more to standalone stories, as the original Avengers movie was standalone as well and not part of a 3-part serialized tale.

Per Jo-Blo:
One Star Wars Spin-Off to focus on Boba Fett
JJ Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII" is set to hit theaters on December 18th, 2015. The film will be the first installment in a trilogy and will spin-off into other films focusing on specific "Star Wars" characters.
There have been rumors that the spin-off movies will revolve around Yoda and Han Solo. But now comes word from Jon Schnepp, the director of animated series "Metalocalypse" and "The Venture Bros," that one of them will definitely focus on Boba Fett.
"One of them is Boba Fett. It is. I know. I know for a fact," he said. "I will never reveal my source, but it is the one written by Lawrence Kasdan."
Kasdan is actually the writer of "Star Wars: Episode V - Empire Strikes Back," the movie that introduced Boba Fett. So, it seems logical for Kasdan to handle the spin-off as well.
We already know that the spin-offs will be origin stories, so expect to see Boba Fett in his early years as a bounty hunter. If the movie will be the first spin-off, then it will hit theaters in 2016, one year after "Episode VII."

I hope the Boba Fett movie is 2 hours of him doing badass shit and then it fades to black for a few seconds and then a scroll of "and then a few years later he was taken out by a blind man who turned around."

Actually, Boba Fett obtained his bounty hunter certification via online classes (product placement sponsored by Phoenix University). He was kicked out of the academy. Wait a second, that may be genius! Think "Van Wilder" meets "The Professional" ...
This is going to be huge problem: Lucas destroyed Fett's backstory with the prequels. What was one of the greatest warriors turned bounty hunter became a clone twerp with daddy issues. Fu-hank you very much, George.
There is a way to make this work, but it is too dark for Disney. The movie follows a roughian who becomes a Mandolorian soldier to evade a bounty hunter who has been pursuing him. The roughian becomes a great warrior, maybe even a soldier-of-fortune once the war has ended (not the Clone War, it only lasted 7 minutes after the build-up of six films over three decades). Through the whole movie we are led to believe this is Boba Fett, although the backstory is not matching up. In the big reveal, we find out Jango Junior/Boba Fett is the bounty hunter chasing our "protagonist." The protagonist kills Jango Junior (maybe by tripping over a Wookie pelt or by accidentally dropping a piano on him ... it's just as good as a blind guy accidentally whacking him during a pirouette) and then becomes Boba Fett ...
Some issues with a Boba Fett movie though:
1) If the spin-off has to be faithful to the prequels, the already in-place backstory may keep him from being as interesting as he could.
2) If the movie is focused on him, that's make him the protagonist. While it may be interesting to see a movie set in the Star Wars universe featuring an anti-hero, I'm worried Disney may want to soften him up to make the character more palatable a protagonist.

A better idea would be a late summer release with a holiday re-release with added footage.

I could see an initial Fett movie about him fighting alongside the cloned kid/manchild..him being killed and than we're back with a fresh start... ending of course with his first meeting/job involving Vader. You could make this whole thing a trilogy, maybe even ending after Jedi. It'd be a good way to go old school and include The Emperor on Coruscant, Jabba, the Empire bounty hunters, etc. Definitely more potential than any of the other character spin offs.

Pitch Black was pretty successful (maybe not financially) with Diesel as the anti-hero in that movie. I could see something similar working out for Fett. I like the idea of him still being involved with the Mandalorians - their participation in the Clone Wars toon was one of my favorite parts of that series. Would be cool to see the Death Watch on the big screen.

I also can see an anti-hero movie working, even financially. I just don't see Disney going that route with a Star Wars branded title.

Riddick is probably exactly the type of tone that a Fett movie should have, but like Jay said, that doesn't seem like the kind of thing Disney would be very keen on doing.

Looks like it's one of a series of images from a set entitled, Dark Lens, by Cédric Delsaux.

My favorites were the two with the AT-ATs. However I had to bring this one over for a "Caption This" ...
Damnit! It was supposed to be round!
