I know I'm getting old when I watch a fight scene and all I'm thinking is "hit their balls!"

So this article seems to say that Lucas was originally going to direct Episode VII and then sell off the rights. But then Disney came into the picture.

Lucas already started to develop the next three Star Wars films, but he knew a third trilogy was a 10-year commitment at least. He at first expected to finish Episode VII, release it in May 2015 and then sell the company afterward.
But Disney expressed interest and came along at the right moment, Lucas says. "It's better for me to get out at the beginning of a new thing and I can just remove myself.
"The time is more important to me than the money."
Now he can focus on writing what he calls small "experimental" films and be first in line in December for Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
"The only thing I really regret about Star Wars is the fact I never got to see it — I never got to be blown out of my seat when the ship came over the screen," Lucas says. "The next one, I'll be able to enjoy it like anybody else."

Lucas: Hey Bob, I got some ideas for changes to Star Wars The Force Awaken when you release it on blu-ray.

I wish that every time Han gets shot at in the film that he ducks to the right.

Lucas has been teasing "small experimental films" for 15 years. Every interview he has, he talks about it. He's never gonna do it. He'll never make another film ever again.

What is the animated film I keep seeing commercials for? They something like "From the mind of George Lucas."
As fun as it is to hate on George, this is really kind of sad and neat all at the same time.

It's called Strange Magic. He wrote the story for it. I totally dismissed it until I found out Gary Rydstrom directed it. I enjoyed the short he directed years ago called Lifted, the cute Pixar alien story. So I'll give Strange Magic a shot, probably as a rental unless my kids want to go see it.

Strange Magic. It's the film the article above is intended to promote. Disney is releasing it next week under the Touchstone label. Between that and the release date, seems like they're dumping it.

FWIW, when I first heard about there being new Star Wars movies, I didn't know it was due to Disney acquiring the rights from Lucas. I thought he was going to be making them and I was actually somewhat perturbed, as I didn't want the series anymore tainted.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Lucas plan before Phantom Menace was released to also make episodes 7-9?

At different points, he had stated that there were anywhere between 9 and 12 parts to the saga. Then when he started working on the prequels, he changed his tune to say there's 6 parts and that's all there would ever be, and that the Saga was the tragedy of Darth Vader.

I remember reading that the original plan was for the VII-IX trilogy would be Luke attempting to find the "other" jedi Yoda and Obi-Wan mentioned in ESB.
However, sometime before ROTJ, the plans for the sequel trilogy were dropped and so they retconned Leia into the "other" by making her Luke's sister. It was never the original plan for them to be twins.
Also, I remember reading that the Emperor wasn't originally planned to be in ROTJ either. He wasn't originally going to appear until the sequel trilogy.

This is why I never believe anything Lucas says because he contradicts himself all of the time. I would get annoyed at fans (especially from TFN) who would always call me and others out as they would quote Lucas and think it was the Bible. They would constantly feed us the bullshit line that the movies were meant to be watched 1-6 and THAT is the Saga, as there will never be anymore movies. Then of course the ST is getting made, and they look foolish now because they bought it hook line and sinker.

Lucas changed his tune with every interview. The reason most of the special features and making of docs of previous releases are left off of new Star Wars releases is because they contradict each other.

About the only thing that stayed consistent over the years was the idea that Darth Vader got his suit during a fight with Obi-Wan. Originally, it was on the edge of a volcano that Vader fell into, but got changed to a whole planet of lava. Oh well, close enough.

You have a few other wonky things here and there. I don't think Leia's description of her mother in Jedi is totally contradictory to her birth in RotS but you have to make your own fanfiction-y leaps to make it work which is ultimately just bad writing. Obi-Wan acting like he doesn't know about Leia when Yoda tells him "there is another" in Empire. Uncle Owen being Obi-wan's brother in the Jedi screenplay and novelization. I still think Luke's line about Dagobah seeming familiar was set up to establish him being born there or there as a child and Lucas had an old brain moment and forgot.
I don't see it as a huge sin to lie about that stuff. Telling people he's had this epic mapped out for years is a better story than admitting he made it up as he went along. It's no different than Cubby Broccoli lying about how he wanted Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton to play Bond years before. It's good PR.
And I'm almost certain there full-blown quotes from Lucas that mention movies beyond Episode VI. Its not as if those claims are unverified rumors. He said one thing and said another years later. No big deal.

could be another "Luke sees Vader's image in a cave" type thing, which prompts him to come out of hiding to investigate why he's seeing Vader again after all of these years.

The first was the twelve part version, which there doesn't seem to be a lot known about. From what I've heard, it was to feature a dozen movies that were more or less standalone features and not necessarily part 2, part 3, etc.
The second version is the the nine part plan Kurtz revealed that was in effect while ESB was filming. In this version, Han would have died in part 6, The Empire would have crushed the Rebellion, and Luke would have gone off on his own. Episode 1 would have detailed the origins of the Force and Jedi, episode 2 would have been the early adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and episode 3 would have been the story of Darth Vader. Episodes 7-9 would cover Luke's adventures as a Jedi, introduce his sister (who was not intended to be Leia), and reveal the Emporer in the final part.
The third version, the one most are familiar with and in effect from the making of ROTJ through the 90s, was apparently a trilogy of trilogies with each one covering a generation of the Skywalker family. The prequels were to be about Annakin Skywalker, and the sequel trilogy about the children of Han & Leia and Luke & whoever, with the only characters appearing in all nine being R2-D2 and C-3PO. This is the direction the EU took.
The fourth version, in effect during the prequels, was a six part saga chronicling the life of Annakin Skywalker.
One interesting thing I notice about this movie is the presence of the Empire. I wonder if this isn't dipping back into the second version where the Empire beat the rebellion in E6, and we discover that the victory in ROTJ wasn't as decisive as we were led to believe.

The battle of Endor was a huge defeat but if the Empire controls the entire galaxy, there are still TONS of Imperials out there. Some high ranking official not at Endor would assume control. Its like the whole scenario of Washington getting nuked. Top brass gone but America would still be there and able to mobilize all the military everywhere else in the country.
Even in the novels, it took years for the Empire to end the war with the Rebels. Even then, there were pockets of the galaxy that the Empire still ran.
This movie could be the remaining Empire has been regrouping and decided now is the time to reclaim what the Rebels took from them.
