Re: Last movie that disappointed you?

I left the Counselor for another day when i am truly bored. Instead i watched Senna (which was really fantastic) and started watching Shoah. Coming in at 9 hours 23 mins, this is gonna be split into a number of parts to complete. After the first couple of hours i am already having a hard time getting through it.

Finally got around to see:

So I Married an Axe Murderer

about 20 years too late.

That movie is the DEFINITION of mediocity. Perhaps because Mike Myers didn't write it?

Re: Last movie that disappointed you?

He's uncredited, but Myers basically rewrote the entire screenplay.

I admit I have somewhat of a soft spot for this movie, but I also saw it back when it showed up on TV. Without any kind of "nostalgia" this movie would be rather off-putting as it reeks of early 1990's.

Pretty much the saving graces for the movie are his dad, his "Woman" poem, and the "Wall of Scottish" gag.

Honorable mention goes to the scene where Anthony Lapaglia forgets to cover his Australian accent.

On the plus side, it's not Wayne's World 2, the Austin Powers sequels, or Love Guru.

The biggest laugh out loud moment for me has always been the unexpected "What the fuck!!" that Mike Myers yells when he almost gets hit with an axe.

I love So I Married an Axe Murderer but I'll admit that a lot of it is nostalgia. If I saw it today for the first time it would feel extremely dated.

Yeah that bit is always "Did he just say that?" This showed on TV not long ago, and they used an alternate take.

As I said, I like the movie...but it's not funny enough to overcome its 90's-ness.

I maybe in the major minority in this thinking, but I didn't find the story/narrative of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid all that interesting - the chemistry and interaction between Redford and Newman was great though.

I like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid a lot but I've never been so taken out of a movie as when the "Raindrops keep Falling on my Head" sequence started. It was like being transported to a whole other film for 5 minutes.

Thor: The Dark World

Still has a clever parts, but ultimately feels completely empty to me.

That whole sequence was pretty bizarre. I liked the movie for the most part, but at times it came off as a little too quarky/feel goody for me.

For me, two movies I watched recently come to mind: Breathless and The Monuments Men.

The Monuments Men
I wanted to like because I liked the cast and I thought the story was interesting, but the movie came off as too formulaic (I think that's the right word) and sentimental-feeling for me. I thought the scene in the camp where "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" played over the loudspeakers was a little over the top in it's sentimentality.

Breathless
I had heard for a while was suppose to be a revolutionary movie and since it was on the Criterion list, I thought I would check it out. I absolutely hated it. I thought the main guy was a complete d-bag (it seemed like this type of character was thought of as "cool" in the '60s), I didn't find the story interesting, and the camera work and editing, which is what was suppose to have made the movie revolutionary in the first place, I found annoying and thought it made the movie look amateurish. I will admit, I'm probably unfairly biased against the filmmaking in Breathless because every quarky indie film that's come out in the last 10 years or so looks like it tried adapting that style in one way or another (although that doesn't help that I found the story dull anyways).

Take out a couple of F bombs and it could have been rated PG-13.

I'm about to watch Olympus Has Fallen on Netflix, I have low expectations but feel I haven't set them low enough.

My choice: Only God Forgives. Horrendous "if only I could be as original as David Lynch" kung fu nonsense movie - on acid.

It was overly stylized and pretentious, attempting to make up for a fairly thin plot.

Re: Last movie that disappointed you?

Frozen. After hearing all the big hype that it was so amazing and awesome, I finally watched it. Wished I hadn't. There wasn't anything that I hadn't seen before. The animation looked cool, but that was about it. It wasn't amazing and awesome like people keep saying. I'd rather watch Shrek The Third again.

Anchorman 2...

I wasn't expecting much (hence the reason I waited for the rental), but enjoy most of Will Ferrell's movies for what they are. This one I had to force myself to finish.
