That doesn't seem like much a drop. With DVR and so much info on the internet, it's a surprise anyone would sit through it.

Next year, they need to make it entertaining if they want people to watch it. Let Tim and Eric host and deconstruct the shit out of it. Or something. Give us something worth watching.

I normally can't stand Neil Patrick Harris, but I actually thought he was funny in several spots.

One of the big complaints on twitter, shortly after JK Simmons, won was people being bored.

You can basically watch the opening and Best Supporting Actor and then come back in 90 minutes for the good stuff.

That's what I do for all award shows. Last night I went and watched TWD starting at 9:15 (so I could FF through commercials). Then came back to the my Oscars recording and FF through all the stuff I didn't care about.

I liked Lady Gaga's bit, but I wish she had worn a dress that would have covered her arms and back. I felt the tattoos were distracting for an otherwise classy getup and performance.

Why wasn't Alfonso Cauron there to present Best Director to his friend? I know they don't always have the preceding winner show up, but it would have been cool in this case.

So JK Simmons won for playing a music teacher... as Vern Schillinger?

UPDATED: Maybe if everybody on the Oscars stage had stripped down to their underwear, the ratings might have gone up. But with a largely non-commercial crop of Best Picture nominees—and only host Neil Patrick Harris willing to bare (nearly) all for our amusement—ABC’s telecast of the 87th Academy Awards declined significantly in the ratings.

Sunday’s awards averaged 36.6 million viewers and a 10.8 rating among adults 18-49 across its three-hour-plus telecast. That’s a 16 percent drop from last year’s ceremony, which was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, and marks a six-year low for the show. The top markets were Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, San Diego, and Kansas City.

Re: The 87th Academy Awards --> 2015 Awards Show Discussion

I will write my review on Birdman in it's thread but it was painfully obvious that the reason "Boyhood" didn't win was because it was released too early in the year and there was the inevitable backlash the movie received after all of the legitimate hype for being a movie that took 12 years to make and the fact that it was getting 95% plus for both critics and viewers on RT.

The Birdman fanboys are mostly made up of viewers that made up their mind that they MUST love this moderately artistic film or be shunned for being a simpleton or someone that cannot appreciate "good" art. Some may actually like the film and may think the innovation makes it deserving of an Oscar or two regardless of the simple story line and basic script. Birdman was style over substance. Boyhood had both style and substance and was amonst the 2 or 3 best films of the year.

I would not have been upset had Nightcrawler been nominated and won for best picture or if Grand Budapest Hotel would have won.

Quite honestly, Birdman is a terrible film and while the directing style has been done before(See Black Swan), the script was drivel and the story has been done since the beginning of time that films were made, more recently in "The Wrestler".

I have had enough of the pseudo elitists on this forum tell people that they are stupid or don't understand great art if they don't like Birdman. How about we don't like Birdman cause it was a TERRIBLE FILM. Long, one camera shots does not make a picture the best. It needs an interesting story, it needs to have some symbolism that is not so obvious, it needs to make you think about issues, it needs to make you feel things you have not felt before, etc. Boyhood fulfills all of these as does other excellent movies like Whiplash, Nightcrawler and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

People will look back on this snub the same way they look back on such idiocy as Shakespeare in Love winning best picture.

But the worst part was they did it just before announcing best picture... when people wanted the final award so they could get the hell out of there... and it took for-EVER to read the predictions. Timing IS everything.

Yep...the first half hour of the show had exactly ONE award (Best Supporting Actor) given out. The musical performances also took up WAY too much time - this isn't the Grammys. I remember when they used to lump all five nominees into ONE big musical number - they need to go back to that. I also would be in favor of moving the technical awards and costuming awards to the Governor's Awards and bringing back the Honorary Awards to the actual telecast...I'd much rather sit through those than see who won Sound Mixing or Best Costume Design.

I don't know about that because usually when that happens, there is a very popular choice that didn't win. SIL's win is remembered because it was an upset, beating Saving Private Ryan. I don't think there was a film (of any of the nominees) this year that most people felt should win; the support seemed to be spread out among several of them.

I bet the vote totals were close.

Birdman is nowhere near as good a film as Whiplash IMO. The ending makes no sense either.

The ending makes sense in one of the better interpretations that I read.
Spoiler:
Basically, the entire film is a dream that Riggan is having after his first suicide attempt.

I can't remember where I read it as I was reading a lot of opinions after I saw the film, but this one person did a great job breaking the film down to support his theory. I don't think it's the only interpretation but it was damn good.

Grammys don't run late like this? I don't think Ellen let the show run late.

Maybe I'm weird, but I'd prefer the Academy ditch the show and just release a list of winners like some government agency releasing a report. It seems that most of the guests don't even want to be there.

Most of the guests don't want to be there? Most people in Hollywood would kill to be in the 15th row in the nosebleed section.

That's the Producers job to keep the show running on time. Since this is an important live awards show for both coasts and only broadcast yearly, I think they let it go past time because local news is on afterwards. The network doesn't air any new programming after this show.

As for your second comment, that will never happen. AMPAS pays a lot of money to broadcast this show. It's also a huge promotional tool for the studios.

It's the biggest event of the year for the motion picture industry. Actors, Producers and Directors would kill to be there. I'm sure plenty fly in from out of state just to be seen there and I'm almost positive the studios also have some say as well in having their talent promote these movies.
