I agree as even in the trailer, Luke’s narration says it’s Rey’s time so he won’t interfere in a physical sense. I think Luke will be a spiritual guide to Rey in the movie and I wouldn’t be suprised if they have a scene or two where the spirit of Luke f**ks with Kylo Ren (not in a physical way, just with his mind to reflect how Luke played him on Crait.)

They are definitely playing the return of Palpatine close to the vest as there was nothing in the photo shoot regarding him in any form. I bet there is one Palpatine reference in Trailer #2 that they are saving.

Damn, I remember those shoots getting me super excited for TPM. I think it might have even survived the purge I did of my collection several years ago.

I already hate the horse things.

But, I hated the Porgs when we first saw them, and now I like them so much I'd consider getting a full body Porg tattoo. Head to toe Porg.

Screw it, I’m gonna go ahead and call it now that it’s actually his evil clone Luuke, who’s been chilling with Palpatine for the last 30 years. I anxiously await my “No-Prize” in December.

They aren't playing it that close. He was featured in the teaser trailer before the title of the movie was even revealed and they had him rerolling the teaser trailer at Star Wars Celebration. And I have no evidence to back it up by I call BS on KK and JJ for saying that they planned to bring him back this whole time since TFA. It's obvious they didn't plan shit.

Hey, if it was good enough for Mamma Mia, it's good enough for Star Wars.

I watched Return Of The Jedi last night. Thankfully neither JJ Abrams or Rian Johnson wrote and directed it or when Luke and Leia are talking on the bridge at the ewok hut and he tells her that he must confront Vader and she tells him to run away instead he would have.

Good point. Also glad Lucas wasn't directing because Luke would have made out with his sister and then busted through the green screen.

That's an interesting throwback, when you look at it in the grand scheme of things. I know we all wanted to see Grandmaster Luke kicking butt and taking names, but PTSD and depression are real things warriors have to face.
Maybe after Kylo destroys his academy, Luke remembers that conversation and wonders how it would have been different if he had run away. Maybe spent more time training and understanding himself and his place in the Force before confronting Vader and Palpatine.

Okay, that made me laugh.

As far as all this talk about bringing Luke back to life, I think that would be a terrible idea. Yeah, I don't like how they changed the character to fit their story goals, but it was a poetic end for the character and definitely an unexpected way to do it.
I much more like the idea of him coming back as a Force ghost or seeing him in flashback.

I was referring more to the scene where he's looking up at the twin sun set, which is a callback to the first film, and then he simply vanishes. Full circle.
As far as the new Jedi superpower, they did the same thing with ESB and introducing telekinesis. In the grand scheme of the things, I like that they slowly further expand on the Force in order to make things seem new. I agree that it seems a little convenient for their purpose of killing off Luke, but it's preferable to Luke going out in a typical, actual lightsaber fight.

I still have this crazy idea that Luke didn’t need to die at all. Could have had him as the wise old master who the new generation could have gone to for help when in need of advice or whatever. Much like the prequels had the Jedi Council. I bet you wouldn’t have gotten much argument from Hamill to pop up on occasion, even if he became mainly a cameo or wasn’t in every main line film. You wouldn’t necessarily need him in action, but to be more useful than an angry old man sitting on an island. Seems like there’s a notion that the old characters need to die off for the new generation to thrive which I find silly.

That's an interesting observation. For all this talk of how Disney's Star Wars is more inclusive and diverse, it comes across as pretty agist.
Max Von Sydow gets killed off right after his character is introduced to the audience. In the Force Awakens they don't even allow a kiss between Han Solo and Leia but they'll force a kiss between young characters like Finn and Rose. And of course Han Solo has to die to make room for his replacement, hot shot pilot Poe.
In The Last Jedi we're introduced to Holdo, played by 52 year old Laura Dern but she gets killed off in the same film. Luke dies because...someone has too, and it can't be the new young actors despite them physically being on a battlefield where people are being killed left and right.

Star Wars kills off Alec Guinness so Luke can shine. Young Luke can then off Peter Cushing in the Death Star. Lets not forget poor Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. Roast in peace.

Return of the Jedi: 900 year old Yoda is offed to make way for the jedi hotness Luke (and another!). Then the film offs an old Anakin and 900 year old looking Emperor.

I think you're trying to read too much into something that isn't there.

To me it always seemed like they did that shit because they painted themselves in a corner and had to find a way out.

Those examples further illustrate my point. The new Star Wars films brings back the trend of agism from the original trilogy. As far as the deaths of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, it's a pretty convenient way to get Luke to adventure off with Obi-Wan. Luke sees their charred remains, which should be the equivalent of a young Bruce Wayne witnessing the murder of his parents, yet Uncle Owen and and Aunt Berut are never mentioned again in the OT or the ST.

I'm not saying that it's affected my viewing of the films, as I've made agist comments regarding Star Wars and Indiana Jones on this forum. Just objectively speaking, I think it's interesting how agism gets overlooked.

That wasn't introduced in ESB, really. Luke heard Ben talking in his head in the first movie. Ben sensed things in his head as well.

There's a difference between telekinesis (moving things mentally) and telepathy (reading/changing other people's minds) or other extrasensory perception.

That said, Vader's force choke in the first movie could be considered telekinesis. However, in ESB it was used like crazy (Luke retrieving the lightsaber, lifting rocks. Yoda lifting the X-Wing. Vader throwing stuff at Luke).

Sorry - I misread the post, I thought we were talking about Vader's ability to talk in Luke's head at the end of Empire (when he was escaping on the Falcon).

After how they resurrected Luke in these sequels, I’d want to retire it myself.

I can see Disney milking another prequel series out of Lukes time on the island....
