Hope its not a costume that's pure CGI (cause it sort of looks it), because that was pretty distracting in Endgame with the Q-Realm suits/helmets.

Was expecting more comments on the Vanity Fair shoot. I think the pick of Luke/R2 opens up a lot of speculation. More flashbacks? I like the picture of the Knights of Ren as that is a clear signal from JJ they’re back and will be prominent in Episode 9. Will Keri Russell take her mask off in the movie?

I think Skywalker will come back as more than just a ghost. Not sure that was always the plan, but it is clear to anybody with firing synapses that they are in damage control mode.

No chance. It’s a flashback or something.

Whatever. They've been retconning and adding more and more powers to the Jedi practically every movie. Luke is the first to understand what the true "balance of the Force" means, and thus gets "rewarded" with yet another power.

You said it was because they are in “damage control” mode. I disagree. The simplest explanation is it’s showing something to do with the formation of the Knights of Ren. Hell they could start the movie with it and get Luke’s appearance out of the way so they can focus on the current characters.

If it was a flashback to Luke he would have shorter and darker hair like he did in the hut with Ben in TLJ. I am hoping Abrams somehow un-ruines the character.

I’m not sure what Abram’s has up his sleeve but I wouldn’t doubt that at some point he’s totally shrugged off some of Rian Johnson’s nonsense. How much or how little, I don’t know. But I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility to think that JJ may bring Luke back. TLJ left just enough ambiguity to his end that it wouldn’t be that difficult to change his fate.

Luke didn’t die he has teleportation powers through the Force now. That’s the explanation for him coming back clearly.

I think bringing him back would ruin the character. His sacrifice in TLJ was incredibly noble and moving. Going against that would be a terrible move. Placating the internet mob should never be a reason to do anything in a movie.

As much as I hate what Johnson did to Luke I don’t think I can see him coming back other than flashbacks or as a Force ghost. It sucks but it is what it is.

If past VF shoots are any indication, there's no guarantee a scene like that actually appears in the movie.

It’s almost like we get a mini-Prequel in Episode 9 aka Godfather 2. Just throwing it out there, but who knows.

I’m not necessarily against bringing Luke back but my biggest problem with it would be that this is supposedly the last film for the original characters. It wouldn’t make a ton of sense to go to the trouble of bringing Luke back in the very last movie of the series.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (12/20/19, W/D: J.J. Abrams)

Since force ghosts can basically appear in the flesh (as Yoda did in TLJ) and interact with the environment (as happened in ROTJ and TLJ) it doesn't really matter if Luke is alive or not does it? I don't think Luke will have a huge role, but hopefully a few pivotal moments. I wonder if they'll keep the same "I cannot interfere" rule from Empire, or if the gloves are off now. And yes, I believe fan service is back on the table for this movie - that's not a bad thing either, Endgame had it in spades. It doesn't make for a better movie...but there's a lot at stake going forward for SW.
