It's a dark Elseworld take on a famous DC property that Todd Phillips thought he could bring a unique spin to. And they managed to get an A-list actor as the lead. Sounds good to me.
Comicbook villans are a function of the concept of superheros.
Supervillans validate superheros.
There is no need for superheros if there are no supervillans.

Re: Joker (2019, D: Todd Phillips) -- S: Joaquin Phoenix

I feel like it’s going to be a good movie for sure and maybe the best under the DC banner since Nolan left. I think the best way to look at it though is as a Elseworlds type version of the character and not truly the main Joker. Either way this is probably the most hyped I’ve been about a DC film in a long time. My main fear is that if this does well that WB might want to incorporate the character into the Reeves/Pattinson Batman films eventually, which I feel would be a mistake.

I bet Joaquin Phoenix probably only agreed to this if it was a one and done.

You could say that - an eight-minute standing ovation.

I have a sinking feeling that Joker is going to be one of those things that triggers the crazies.

there are already articles saying to give Phoenix the Oscar now. that would certainly be interesting for 2 to win as a superhero villain. i know the same character has won before (Queen Elizabeth, i believe, which technically is based on reality), but not a fictitious villain in this type of movie certainly...

^This is what I was talking about when I said this:

The mindset that "The World is shitting on me so I'm going to destroy it(shoot it up)!!!!". And that it also showcases Albesim in terms of mental illness.

Queen Elizabeth? Am I forgetting something? I count once for I (Dame Judith Dench) and once for II (Dame Helen Mirren).

Yup.
Even if the film isn't glorifying the behavior, it will no doubt be latched onto by those that feel that way, not unlike Fight Club or Rorschach from Watchmen, or hell, even Natural Born Killers to an extent.

The message, whatever it may be in this case, will be lost on those folks.

Interesting. Do you think it's because of how this film may be less "Comic book film"? What about about how the talent attached has given it more dramatic legitimacy?

Some reports are now saying this could get up to $90 million opening weekend. That's nuts.

I found out this weekend there will be 35mm screenings at the local Alamo Drafthouse. I think that's how I'll see the movie.

That would be incredible for a movie I’ve heard no one talk about outside of this forum.

My wife, who hasn’t seen a super hero movie in a theater since the 89 Batman, wants to see this. I take that as a sign.

Re: Joker (2019, D: Todd Phillips) -- S: Joaquin Phoenix

Using that gritty aesthetic, Phillips is much more interested in dissecting what makes a comic book character real than making a real comic book character and, in that aim, he’s successful. Arthur is a fascinating and endlessly compelling person. He’s also terrifying and, for most of the film, sympathetic.
