I’ve still got some reservations about this but that second trailer got me a lot more excited than the first one.

It still would have been a hard act to follow though.
With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder if they could have written the third Nolan Batman in a way that has Phoenix taking up the mantle of “Joker” without necessarily playing the same character as Ledger.

Write it as “as long as there is someone who wants to watch the world burn, there will always be a Joker”. Kind of storyline.

Who needs hindsight? That could be established in this film if they really wanted to. This Joker could be a child that was a victim or witness to one of Ledger's Joker's crimes. Boom, connected.

Re: Joker (2019, D: Todd Phillips) -- S: Joaquin Phoenix

^ I only say hindsight because at the time of The Dark Knight Rises, I’m sure no one envisioned Phoenix as Joker. Now that he’s actually playing the part, and looks legit doing it, it’s a bit easier to see him in the Nolan-verse. Immediately following Ledger’s death, no one was willing to see anyone else take up the role.

I was also more referring to TDKR as continuing the Joker storyline. I don’t remember the filmmakers original thought process but I’m pretty sure I remember hearing that the third film was supposed to continue with the Joker but after Ledger’s death, they completely changed the story.

Honestly though, I probably wouldn’t be disappointed with A scene like you mentioned in Joker.

Phoenix is also benefitting from not being the first Joker after Ledger. Leto's shit performance as a lame ass Joker took all the heat of Phoenix for this movie. Anything will be a step of from that Suicide Squad shitfest.

Good point. I wonder if Phoenix’s Joker would be taking more heat if Leto’s Emo-pimp Joker had come out first?

I keep watching these trailers and keep asking, "WHY?"
Why in the hell should I care one iota about the Joker's background?
He is a comic book villian for fnck's sake!
Joker without Batman?
Gimme a break...

I love the trailer, but I love this poster too. It's a little subtle in that you wouldn't know it's supposed to be a comic book movie aside from the title.

Harley Quinn's first solo series by Karl Kessel and Terry Dodson was great, and the Joker and Batman only featured in a couple issues.
Black Adam turned out to be a great character independent of Captain Marvel.
Villains United by Gail Simone, featuring c-list villains, turned out to be great without any superheroes in the story.

Me personally, I'm tired of Batman. But a solo Joker film that tells his origin, in a serious, non-canon, out-of-continuity, Imaginary Story/Elseworlds way? I'm there. It's nice to get a comic book movie that's not a big dumb special effects extravaganza featuring super-powered characters beating the shit out of each other.

I might agree if this was promoted as taking place in the same universe as Man of Steel, BvS, Wonder Woman, Aqua-man and Justice League. But this film seems to just be an alternate take on the Joker. It doesn't seem to be claiming to be thee official Joker origin story, or even setting up the DC cinematic universe. I like that WB seems to be throwing continuity and MCU-imitation out the window and just doing something more creative. So if that's the case, why not?

I just meant him playing the same part. Especially with it being a trilogy specifically and not a larger universe of films I’d have preferred that. Of course it is hindsight but it’s an interesting “what if” scenario. I’d be curious to know what Nolan’s plan for the third film was originally and how much Joker was to be involved.

Yeah, the King of Comedy influences are hitting you over the head with a hammer. A giant, oversized clown-hammer.

Totally agree! In my opinion, DC should approach all their character's movies like this from now on.

Yes I am.

Would be kinda funny to see DeNiro play that villain. Would be more hilarious if this predication came true.

Unless you're just pre-disposed to not caring about a "villain" as the focal point of the story.

It's a dark Elseworld take on a famous DC property that Todd Phillips thought he could bring a unique spin to. And they managed to get an A-list actor as the lead. Sounds good to me.

I'm really stoked for this. Phoenix looks great in the role. On a side note, I feel like his brother River would have made a great Joker too.

I totally agree with this. While I've enjoyed many of the MCU movies in the recent years (can't say the same about DC movies) I'm ready for different takes on the subject.
