re: Ghostbusters III (2015) S: Jonah Hill

In an interview in Australia, the host of this show asks Apatow if he's involved with Ghostbusters 3. Although he doesn't confirm, at 6:08 he claims he's available.

Also, as an aside, Hoobastank did a cover of the GB theme at MTV World Stage in Malaysia a couple of days ago.

re: Ghostbusters III (2015) S: Jonah Hill

The Stupinsky & Eisenberg script was finished a few weeks ago. Aykroyd has confirmed his getting it, and Reitman has made a few comments as well (from Proton Charging):
Speaking to the Sun media group, Ivan Reitman has confirmed the third draft script for Ghostbusters 3 is done and he has a copy (just as Dan Aykroyd does) – presumably Harold Ramis has a copy then as well then.

While not commenting directly on the script, Reitman did express optimism that this is the closest it’s ever been to seeing a third film get the greenlight.

He also commented on directing the film, and while it had been suggested in the past that he might not direct, Reitman is now being quite clear on the matter – having directed and produced the first two movies, he feels it’s his right to do the same on the third film.

“For me as a director it would be very hard to let anyone else direct it. I do feel very possessive of it. I’m the sole producer and director of the first two, so I feel it’s both my obligation and my right to do it. But I won’t do it and won’t allow it to happen unless it’s good.”

Also interesting is Reitman’s commenting on the flaws of Ghostbusters 2, though he still says he’s happy with the film.

“We got the first two acts in pretty good shape and then the last act of our story didn’t come up to it. I’m really happy with the movie, but it was certainly not up to the creative level of the first film.”

So, hurtles still remain, but we have a script and nobody is tossing it in the trash. We have at least two of the five parties who have to say yes being very positive on the matter, and another – Sony – putting a lot of time and energy into helping revitalize the franchise with the public (ie new products, the game, Blu-ray release, etc.)

For comparison and perspective, this puts us roughly en par with where we were ten years back, when Dan was pushing the script he and Ramis wrote to Sony/Columbia. Though arguably this is a bit beyond even that, as Sony wasn’t that interested back then, which helped lead to Dan Aykroyd splitting with the company and moving his production offices on the studio lot.

So, no, this is still not party time yet – but boy, it’s about as good a chance as it’s ever been. So, cautious optimism all round, eh?
Very re-assuring to see Retiman would want to be at the helm again.

Yeah, I'd really be gung ho for him to do it. I'd fear someone else would bring something too different to it.

They may be too late on this one.
The series started in the 80's and all 80's movie series have been out this decade to capitalize on the public that first saw them when they were young. Now that age group is their 30's and are mostly single and have money to see a movie like on dates and stuff.
90's movies will be chic next decade.

Ivan Reitman hasn't directed a decent movie in DECADES.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006)
Evolution (2001)
Six Days Seven Nights (1998)
Fathers' Day (1997)
Junior (1994)
Dave (1993) --an exception, OK movie, mostly because of Kevin Kline though.
Kindergarten Cop (1990)
Ghostbusters II (1989)
Twins (1988/I)
Legal Eagles (1986)
Ghost Busters (1984)

He can produce but keep him away from the director's chair. I'd be all for someone bringing something DIFFERENT to the table. Respect the past but blaze something new and exciting, with the original film's spirit of offbeat anarchy.

Evolution and Six Days, Seven Nights are, as far as I'm concerned, competently directed. I even think about 60% of Evolution is amusing, if nowhere near the level of Ghostbusters or even Men in Black. Their flaws are in the scripts.

That said, I remember watching the trailer for My Super Ex-Girlfriend and being truly depressed at the staging of the jokes. Maybe it's different in the movie, but Reitman really appeared to be actively ruining the potential humor in that one.

re: Ghostbusters III (2015) S: Jonah Hill

Ghostbusters in 2011:

http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/12/29/...rs-3-for-2011/

I propose a new policy for 2010: let’s not be even vaguely ready to buy into every little Ghostbusters 3 statement that passes the lips of Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd. Especially Dan Aykroyd. But the thing does seem to be happening, for better or worse, and while we’re lodged in the last days of 2009 I’ll stick with this year’s policy of delivering every shred of haphazard promise about the upcoming film. The latest is from Harold Ramis, who promises a summer 2010 shoot for a 2011 release.
The statements come from Heeb, which spoke to the director about many of his films, and got a couple neat statements about Groundhog Day. (Check the source for those.) Of Ghostbusters 3, he says:

Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We’ll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future … GB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011.

Isn't the Avengers supposed to pop out that year too? Wait nvm...that's 2012. Hopefully it goes ok for the Cap film considering that Johnson ain't exactly looking hot w/ the Wolfman atm.

Don't believe anything until we see set pics.

In other news, Michael Cera has apparently been campaigning for the role of Oscar (Dana's son in GB2 - his character is confirmed as returning).

Me too. He has the upper hand right now since he personally has worked with Harold Ramis and is an avid Ghostbusters fan..

I would take that as seriously as Apatow producing which we know isn't going to happen.

I like Michael Cera (and I think Youth in Revolt, which looks like it's specifically targeting those that hate his "trademark" persona, will change a few minds back about his acting skills), but the article in question doesn't actually quote Cera as having asked to play Oscar, or even quote him as wanting to be in the movie at all. It only claims that Cera -- who knows how seriously -- asked to be in the movie.

Really? Based on the trailer I saw it looked pretty much like Michael Cera playing Michael Cera ...with a mustache. He gets a lifetime buy for Arrested Development, but unfortunately his career peaked there. I have nothing against him, but he has zero range.

I'd rather him not be anywhere near a new Ghostbusters movie, but if that's what it takes to get the film made, then so be it.

What defines the Cera personality to me is the awkwardness, the idea seems to be -- I haven't seen the movie -- that the Nick Twisp persona is the awkward Cera type and he basically creates an anarchic second personality with all the dickish confidence in the world. If audiences find it funny, perhaps they'll accept Cera in roles where he's meant to be an asshole, nary a single stutter. Just a theory, though.

re: Ghostbusters III (2015) S: Jonah Hill

Well gentleman, it looks like pre-production has begun. And... Ghostbusters 3 may very well be Ghostbusters 3D:
MarketSaw, a website that specializes in news about 3D movies, has it on good authority from someone inside ILM that preproduction on Ghostbusters 3 has begun, and in a decidedly grand way – apparently, if the rumours are true, Ghostbusters 3 will be in 3D.

Indeed this creates a lot of questions – most important is “how solid is this info?”, followed by “and if it is solid, how close is an official greenlight on the project.” After all, if production isn’t greenlit, all this SFX cloak and dagger stuff is moot. The 3D aspect aside, this rumour is more interesting as it is the first confirmation of ANY sort of pre-production being underway. New York, for example, has yet to see ANY location scouting (that’s my exclusive PC rumour of the day.)

But finally, should Ghostbusters be in 3D? It’s a question only recently being applied to predominantly live-action films, after a couple of years of big boxoffice for CGI 3D films.

I don’t know if it needs to be in 3D, but it certainly can’t hurt. And for those of you who weren’t around in the 80s, there’s something very oldschool about making the third sequel 3D.
