Re: 40th Anniversary of Alien - May 25

I saw Alien in the movie theater when it first came out, when the only advertising for it was this:

No movie trailers, no other advertising, just the poster.

It scared the crap out of everybody. I loved it!

I didn't even get to own the awesome Kenner Alien figure until years later, I asked for one for Christmas but never got it, but I now have a boxed one proudly sitting on my shelf. So yeah, if this plays in a theater near me I'm definitely gonna see it!
I saw it in the theater when I was nine. My 18-year-old brother took me. Movie theaters were kind of chill back then in the states!
I never recovered, and I am all the better for it.

Re-releases are 50/50 with AMC. Some are, some are not. When I saw the re-release of The Abyss last Fall, it qualified.

The first trailer I saw didn't even have any scenes from the film, just the egg cracking open and what I think was the sound of the Nostromo's alarm from the end of the film. That was enough for me, "I have to see this!" I thought. Then it said "Rated R", dammit!

I have that as well, used to have it hanging up in my bar. I've actually collected a lot of toys and memorabilia from the first film (featuring the "Big Chap") both vintage and newer, probably too much.

Re: 40th Anniversary of Alien - May 25

Todd also did posters for Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws, Rocky, Robocop, and Godfather.

Sort of wish I picked up a few more before the prices went nutso. I'd at least liked to have had Jaws, Robocop, F13, and NOES.

Too bad they didn't make more. I'd have killed for the Star Wars trilogy, Terminator, Blade Runner, Indiana Jones trilogy, and The Thing.

I saw Aliens in the theater before I saw Alien also.

If this is close to me I may check it out.

Yep - and that stuff was in every other commercial break - or so it seemed. I got very tired of it and felt it was all bluster with nothing to back it up (it was in the years when SF/Horror movies were generally vastly over hyped with that hype rarely paying off - and *this* one didn't even bother to show any footage from the film making it even more sketchy feeling). I refused to go see it... Then *did* finally see it when it came to HBO and wished I'd have gone to the theater. If it plays here I'll likely attend as it's one of a handful I think would be good on a large screen.

McFarlane chose posters with pretty simple (yet extremely effective) artwork. I think they’d have trouble doing some of those other posters because they’re pretty detailed.

I do regret missing out on the Jaws poster. I had it in my hot little hand at one point and put it back in the shelf.

The prices are nutso for them now? Maybe I need to dig up my Alien one and see what I can sell it for.

My first introduction to Alien was buying the bubble-gum cards in the candy aisle of the local convenience store when I was six.

A few years ago Alien and Jaws were going for over $100. Might have cooled down some, though. I was looking for a Jaws and they were selling in the $80+ range loose and in less than mint condition. I only saw one MIB Jaws and it was in the $125+ range.

Yeah, Jaws and Alien are pretty simple designs. The NOES and F13 were the most elaborate.

Re: 40th Anniversary of Alien - May 25

Im checking my closest theater to see when tickets will go on sale but nothing yet. I'd love it if Alien were playing on large format screens for a week but that's seems doubtful.

Wow, had no idea. Mine is loose but near mint, the battery doesn't work anymore, I forget if it's replacible or not, I gotta find the damn thing. Wonder what my Kenner Alien goes for these days (although I'm not selling that, it's one of my favorite vintage toys).

Re: 40th Anniversary of Alien - May 25

I bought the Alien 3D poster at either Suncoast or Spencer's a long time ago on clearance. The box was kind of scuffed up, but the poster itself was mint.

They also had Friday the 13th, Godfather, and Jaws. I would have picked up Jaws, but some stuff was broken off of it and I didn't want it. The F13 left a bit to be desired up close so I didn't get it. I would have gotten the NOES and Robocop if they had them in mint condition, though.
