Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news
This looks like it will seriously affect the way we see movies from here on out. I don't think it will kill movie theaters overall but you might see some close down locations and the smaller ones going out of business completely. It will also be an experimental time for studios to find out how audiences will take to VOD rentals day and date with theatrical releases. This might finally become the norm after this.
Anyone else think that Peter Rabbit would be a great candidate for release on VOD? Timing of that one seems pretty crucial.

It’s how I justify blind-buying movies for $19.99. Still cheaper than my wife and I seeing it in the theater and I’ll probably like it enough to be happy I now own it.
I’d pay $50 to own something like “Black Widow” right now, because we’d pay at least $25 in tickets for my wife and I at the theater and then another $19.99 to own it anyway.

Way to premature to predict that this will change the landscape of movie releases...for a short time yeah but I can't see it overall once things stabilize.

I've also thought for years there are too many movie theaters around me. There are at least 10 within a 20 mile radius of my house. There is never really a "sold out" showing because I could just go someplace else. They are eating each other's profits (and I know they don't make much on a new release weekend anyway). I could see more than a few close down and not come back.

At this point, even being optimistic and the virus can be stopped in the next few months, Summer is already over. I wouldn't mind paying to BUY some of the new movies, for more, like a $29.99 pricepoint. I would imagine studios are working on this pretty fast.

There’s now a Netflix chrome add on letting you sync a viewing remotely (which the XBOX 360 has years ago but then removed):

How do you think celebrities do this? Some poor intern has to stitch all those videos together? Or do you think she did it herself and just contacted her celebrity friends?

yeesh, with the way some of them sing I think I prefer the Italian trumpet.
j/k it was a cute video. Also Gal got a cute singing voice too. Add that to the giant pile of positives in her direction.

Minions: The Rise of Gru pulled from it's July release
I would expect more to follow. Summer 2020 is looking grim at the movies.

Analyst doesn't see how AMC Theatres survives the shutdown.
That would be pretty sad if AMC has to close for good after this.

They'll ask for a bailout. Theatres are already doing it.
Or maybe two chains will merge.
All I have near me are AMCs... I don't know what would happen for me if they shut down...

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news
In an effort to help the shuttering of theaters amid the coronavirus outbreak, Kino Lorber announced that is launching Kino Marquee, a virtual theatrical exhibition initiative that will enable movie theaters that have closed to continue to serve their audiences and generate revenue.
Under the initiative, films will have a virtual release with participating theaters for other currently scheduled and upcoming Kino Lorber and Zeitgeist titles until theaters are able to reopen. The first Kino Marquee screenings have been set at New York’s Film at Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music and Jacob Burns Film Center. All will open with the Kino Lorber Cannes-winning title Bacurau.
“When theaters started to close, we at Kino Lorber turned our thoughts to how we could collaborate with our independent theater partners across the country. We cannot release the kinds of films we do without their support,” said Wendy Lidell, SVP of Theatrical Distribution at Kino Lorber. “Of course we wanted to find a way to keep our current film release in front of audiences, but to do so in a way that would also benefit our exhibition partners. We want to help ensure that these theaters will be able to reopen their doors after this crisis passes. The Kino Marquee program offers an opportunity for theaters to generate revenue while their doors are closed.”
As of now, the following theaters are participating in the Kino Marquee program:
Film at Lincoln Center (New York, NY)
BAM (Brooklyn, NY)
Jacob Burns Film Center (Pleasantville, NY)
The Little Theatre (Rochester, NY)
Santa Barbara International Film Festival Riviera Theatre (Santa Barbara, CA)
The Frida Cinema (Santa Ana, CA)
Denver Film / Sie FilmCenter (Denver, CO)
Belcourt Theater (Nashville, TN)
Loft Cinema (Tucson, AZ)
Austin Film Society (Austin, TX)
Aperture Cinema (Winston Salem, NC)
Kino Marquee is hosted on the Kino Now VOD platform and visitors to website will not be able to navigate to theaters’ virtual screening rooms. Each theater will promote its own film page via traditional means and virtual “ticket” buyers from the theater’s Kino Marquee site will receive a link that gives them admission to an online screening room. The Kino Marquee initiative is expected to be scaled up in the coming weeks in response to market demand.

If a major studio wanted to do this, they'd probably have to partner with a streaming service. I wonder if Fandango could link with FandangoNow so that one could buy a "virtual ticket" for a movie at a particular theater, and that then gets you a rental on FandangoNow for that title.

AMC has a VOD service too. But it’s not available on the whole array of devices. They’d need to roll out on to more to get a broader reach.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news
Regarding cinemas... Man... I just have a terrible feeling about all this. I don't think many one-off art-houses will survive, and I think even the chains (big and small) are in a position to completely fail and not come back. At least... they won't come back in the way we know them to be today. .
This virus is going to decimate a lot of small businesses that don't have deep pockets. Arthouse theaters, indie books stores, comic book stores, records stores, small clothing boutiques. Most of these places run on a shoestring, and any disruption in business is going to hit hard. It's also going to take people a while to get back out and spending money, either from fear of the virus or money being tight.
I can also see a lot of bars and restaurants getting ratfucked hard by this, too, as many have probably been spending a lot in preparation for March Madness, especially in the cities hosting games.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if we lose half of our small businesses by the end of the year.
