7 Oscars is pretty damn good.

Am I crazy or does Emily Blunt not get enough credit for being an amazingly beautiful woman?

And since Nolan already spoke as best director, glad he gave his wife and other producing partner the spotlight.

Sorry, I was sitting here thinking the same thing about Florence Pugh. Absolutely breathtaking.

… and they play Barbie’s “Dance the Night Away” as the show closes.

Brilliant!

Is it just me or were there more beautiful women at the Oscar ceremony than I've seen in a long, long time? Not just nominees, but presenters (Jennifer Lawrence!) and wives/girlfriends of nominees/presenters. I mean, Chris Hemsworth's date...I only caught a glimpse of her but--wow! And that was Becky G from the Power Rangers movie performing one of the Best Song nominees.

Didn't notice that. Need to rewatch. But how stunning was she? Wow!

No real surprises but well earned Oscars all around! I only got to watch the second half of the show but I enjoyed everything I saw (minus the wonky “In Memoriam” segment.

Ended before 10:30! Which is really 9:30 (EST) because of Daylight Savings Time this morning.

The In Memoriam segment was really short. But I guess if they'd done it TCM style it would have gone on for ten minutes or so, given the huge number of those who passed since last ceremony.

What I noticed and appreciated was the remarkable camaraderie among the nominees and presenters. We never saw this in Old Hollywood.

Re: The 96th Academy Awards --> 2024 Oscar Awards Show Discussion

One of the worst In Memorial segments I've ever seen. The other would have been the last time they did the exact same thing (sometime around 2004 maybe? Not entirely sure) having the cameras craning all around the stage so you could barely make out the names and faces on the montage. The show producers were heavily criticized for the production in the following days, and they've been done very well since, so I'm surprised to see them take a giant step-backwards and do something they've already been told is a fuck-up. Different show producers over the years obviously.

I remember one year where Peter Coyote was doing the David Alan Griar announcing role, and it felt just as odd then. Made we wonder if Peter had fallen on hard times.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say I'm a "detractor", but I'm not much of a fan of Christopher Nolan's body of work (I haven't seen everything).

Love the reaction shot of Martin Scorsese looking like Mr. Magoo as he clapped for Christopher Nolan.

The production of the Ken song was fantastic. I agree that song is pretty lackluster, but it was probably worth nominating for giving us that performance.

Little disappointed there wasn't a huge fuck-up this year. My favorite Oscar moments are the awkward ones, and the only major one we got was the woman GODZILLA winner's face collapsed when she realized this idiot was going to ramble until he was dragged off. Kudos to the director for cutting to a close-up of the (I assume deceased relative) photo she was holding after she realized she wasn't going to have a chance to speak and held the picture out to try and get it seen.

Oscars.com has the list of Academy members who passed away in the past year, and there are over 100 names, Then add on some noteworthy people in the industry, who may not have been Academy members.

There were a couple of botched comedy bits but the one major faux pas I noticed was Al Pacino not reading the ten Best Pic nominees and going straight to the envelope.

Well, I was surprised "American Fiction" won Best Adapted Screenplay over "Oppenheimer". And "The Zone of Interest" won Best Sound (!) over "Oppenheimer". All great films all around. And "American Fiction" had a phenomenal screenplay. But every Oscar prediction website pretty much said "Oppenheimer" had these two awards in the bag.

I don't think he was supposed to. They announce the nominees throughout the night with the video packages. The same is true for best original song. The performances themselves are the defacto reading of the nominees.

American Fiction became the favorite in the last week or so according to the betting markets.

Zone of Interest had gained a lot of momentum since people started actually seeing it in the last few weeks. Given the timelines of its message and the importance of sound to the movie, many thought it was a strong contender.

The Ringer's Big Picture podcast correctly predicted both. They Said there was a big late push for American Fiction. They predicted that the Academy's big foreign contingent would put Zone ahead in Sound and Boy and the Heron over Spider-Verse in Animated.

Jimmy is so good at hosting this show. A total pro.
For all his complaining ahead of time, still haven't seen Jeff weigh in yet. Maybe he's not up yet?

If this was John Mullaney auditioning for the hosting job in the future, he passed with flying colors. Wouldn't mind him hosting next year.

Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon were each nominated for 10 Oscars and won none. That's got to be a low key record that will never be broken.

My daughter pointed out that Billie Eilish now has more Oscars than Marty. I told her that had to be wrong, that Marty was certainly a producer on The Departed, but she's right and I was wrong.

11 nominations and zero Oscars:

The Turning Point (1977)
The Color Purple (1985)
