I seriously think this is a big hoax. Angel will be back.

Think about it . . . what better way to create interest than a little controversy

Their likely reason is to bring in curious people . . . those wanting to know why "all the ruckus" over a show being cancelled.

It also helps them to estimate how strong the base is. I wouldn't be surprised to see Joss right in the middle of it.

This may lead to something good.

They cancelled Buffy when it had as strong or stronger base of fan support. Those who are fans believe them when they say they are cancelling Angel.

So I'm not a fan, since I think this is not for real? I've watched every Buffy and Angel episode (some more than twice) and enjoyed them immensely. But, I'm not a fan since I believe Angel will be back.

Wow, I was wondering what defined being a fan. Thanks for enlightening me. Anyone else here not a fan?

Seriously, though. Most popular shows will go to at least the 7th season. Angel has a good two seasons left. I can't name a popular show (with the fan support of Angel, Buffy, DS9, X-Files etc) that didn't go to the 7th stretch. I'm sure there are some out there. I just can't name them. Anybody?

Quantum Leap - 5 seasons
Babylon 5 - 5 seasons
Voyagers! - 1 season (though star accidentally killed himself)

I'm sure there are plenty, but you're definition of "popular show" is hugely open to individual preferences/interpretation... and pretty much would lead WAY off topic.

Miami Vice changed television back in the 80s, 5 seasons it lasted, 111 episodes, about the same as Angel all together.

Magnum PI another favorite cop show lasted 5 seasons.

Both these shows had popular actors, Don Johnson, Tom Shelleck who like many like to move on, it has some influence, David Borenaze has played Angel for 8 years, 3 on buffy, 5-angel, and talked about moving on, but he says he reviews it every year, because Angel has been so good and challenging, he kept playing him, some shows creatively peak or feel tired after 5 seasons, the six million dollar man ended on the 5th season, wasn't really the same, but Angel is creatively strong to go longer, it's why people hungar for more, where as some shows in the past felt like they've gone the distance at the end of 5 seasons.

I also believe Columbo went 5 seasons, when it originally aired in the 70s.

Good points on all of it. Don Johnson and Tom Selleck both were at the beginning of movie careers when these shows ended. Even SMG was wanting to step down from Buffy because she wanted to to something else. I'd venture that David Boreanz has a lot of say. Since he doesn't have a movie career, as of yet, and no one else on Angel has a movie career to speak of . . . I'd venture that bodes well for Angel.

I guess that I'm just trying to see the silver lining. Angel and Smallville are the only new shows that I watch now. It'd just plain suck to be down to just Smallville.

I still hold to that this is a ploy by the WB and possibly others involved to see just how popular Angel truly is. This upheaval in the fan base may not just bode well for Angel, but also Ripper and possibly some Buffyverse on the big screen. This is still a fairly new franchise. It has a LOOONG way to go.

Angel will be here next season. Unless, of course, the WB has decided to not make money. Then . . . bye bye Smallville.

"They" didn't cancel Buffy. It was Joss' and SMG's decision to discontinue Buffy at the end of Mutant Enemy's two-year contract with UPN -- and SMG's seven-year contract with Mutant Enemy.

I still think the bottom line is this: Producers get a five-year contract when they begin a new show. After the fifth year, a new contract has to be negotiated. And the costs to the network always go way up if a new contract is signed for a sixth year. That's why the WB lost Buffy after the fifth season. They weren't willing to pay the price for a new contract. UPN took a chance and bought it, and from the network's perspective, their gamble failed miserably. With Angel, WB decided to just not negotiate a new contract and to move on.

Yeah, I mean it is smart to promote the show by canceling it, creating interest everywhere, then bringing it back, it won't cost them marketing money, as they don't advertise Angel well, it would be a cold ploy that wouldn't work on all shows, but ones with strong fan bases and loyal viewers, certainly canceling Angel has made everyone talk about how good it is and stuff, if it wasn't canceled, we'll just be talking about angel, and nothing more, if WB is smart, they can use the saving campaign to its strength, but still all this talk about money, maybe every network is out to produce cheap cost effective shows, that last about 5 years at the most, then do the next thing, genre tv is on the blink, reality tv has taken over, and this trend will get worn away, then maybe genre comes back in some chris carter x files type hit, but I know, we don't want to wait, and Angel can't wait, we want one last bloody season!! it's too much pain to take, it's what a good tv show does to you.

By 2009, let's have 5 more Angel seasons out of the way, 3 years into the Spike series spinoff, 2 years into the Wesley/Gunn series spinoff, 4 years into the Giles series spinoff, and two Buffy movies behind us!!

How's that sound?

Oh, and Xander has to have something . . . maybe his very own theme park.

Yeah, I would like that, but with it not likely to come back for sixth, I'm not here to raise hopes, just fight the good fight for the show and save our souls from the pain of network idiots.

Check this out, this is probabley the biggest campaign, in terms of organization and fan base I've seen for attempting to renew a show. Whether it works or not, it' s a good thing in that, the show is getting more publicity as it goes out on top, or WB feels the pressure for their dumb decision, the angel fans are cool.

PR: 'Save ANGEL Week' Kicks Off With LA Rally
(#103)posted Thursday March 11 2004 04:29:00 AM by Site Admin()
Campaign Efforts Span the Globe

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

'SAVE ANGEL WEEK' KICKS OFF WITH LA RALLY
Campaign Efforts Span the Globe

10 MARCH, LOS ANGELES-- ANGEL fans from around the world are showering WB Co-CEO Jordan Levin with signs of devotion to their favorite vampire with a soul. From flower arrangements to advertising to rallies and blood drives, the campaigns to save the cancelled WB series ANGEL have hit full steam.

Burbank area florists received a mini economic boom as over 100 flower bouquets began delivery Wednesday to the offices of The WB, all aimed at Jordan Levin. Cards expressed sympathy for the potential loss of viewers, as well as words of support if the network reverses its decision. The initial suggestion came from The WB's own online message board, and spread to all the campaign sites.

On Friday, the Save ANGEL Rally kicks off "Save ANGEL Week" which runs through March 19th. The LA Rally will draw hundreds to a peaceful demonstration in front of the Warner Brothers studios in Burbank, California. Rally organizer Pepper Aahz said, "We're going to show the WB executives that there are enough fans to make a difference, that we are willing to fight for ANGEL."

Next Wednesday, March 17, will be national "Give Blood for ANGEL" day. Fans from around the country will be stopping by their local Red Cross blood bank to donate in the name of the series. Individual donor cards reading "I gave my blood for ANGEL" will be sent to the network in demonstration of how much fans want to see the show continued.

One campaign, at SavingAngel.org, has ads running in industry magazines, beginning with a March 9th full-page in The Hollywood Reporter. On March 15th, a similar ad will appear in Variety.

Earlier in the week, viewers were buoyed by insider information that their efforts had already returned the production companies and The WB to the negotiating table. A source with connections to Mutant Enemy posted a tip that talks were currently underway to bring ANGEL back from the dead. An earlier message sent from News Corporation's UK satellite company BSkyB seemed to confirm that the parties were feeling the pressure from both ANGEL viewers and broadcasters.

ABOUT THE SAVE ANGEL RALLY

The Save ANGEL Rally was originated and organized by Pepper Aahz, a 25-year-old mother of two in San Jose, California. Aahz feels a strong connection to the show, for a particularly personal reason: her autistic son learned to speak because of it. "Therapists and surgeries didn't have the same impact on my child as a good guy saving the world with a cool sword. After two years of watching, he now has a semi-full vocabulary."

Said Aahz, "I owe it all to the cast and crew of Buffy [the Vampire Slayer] and Angel."

Through the series, Aahz has found friendship and escape from daily worries: "Because of this show, I have met the most amazing people. Every Wednesday, the same group of us meet to watch ANGEL, and regardless of personal stress, we can always put it aside for one hour, together."

Divine Intervention from Angel's Admirers--and a Quippy Q&A with the O.C. OGs

by Kristin | March 12, 2004
(The artist formerly known as Wanda)

The results are in on this year's Save One Show campaign--where you, the fans, voted for the endangered series you most want to save from cancellation.

I can think of only one word to describe them: holy-freakin'-poop.

Over the past two weeks, more than 400,000 (!) E! Onliners from around the world--Latin America to Australia and Asia--sounded off in our poll. The winning show received an astounding 85 percent (!!) of the votes.

That show is the WB's Angel.

As promised, I am writing letters to the network suits (at both the WB and UPN, which has been pitched the show) to help make your voices heard. The original plan was to do this for the top three contenders, but because Angel took such a huge chunk of the pie, the other series--including Arrested Development, Boston Public, Enterprise, Ed, Miss Match, One Tree Hill and Tru Calling--each received only 1 to 3 percent of the votes. So, this year, SOS is all about Angel.

(We'll also have some juicy O.C. scoop--since I just stalked, harassed and attempted to fondle the cast at an event--but first things first.)

To the Powers That Be at the WB and UPN: TV fans around the world have spoken through E! Online's Save One Show campaign, showing overwhelming support for the recently canceled Angel. On their behalf, I am here to beg, plead and share with you the top five reasons this undead champ deserves to live.

1. The Fan Efforts Are Unprecedented. Not only have Angel supporters signed petitions (more than 75,000 on one site alone) and donated their own money for full-page ads in the Hollywood Reporter and Variety, they're taking positive action by sending flowers to WB executives such as Jordan Levin (who, in turn, has passed them along to children's hospitals), organizing rallies in Los Angeles and Hamburg, Germany--and even holding a blood drive to keep Angel alive. You will not find more dedicated fans!

2. The Ratings Are Strong. Its average of 3.7 million viewers this season--those aforementioned die-hard fans--proves Angel packs more Nielsen's power than most WB and UPN shows. And thanks to syndication on TNT, many new viewers are discovering the series.

3. The Fans Deserve a Good Send-Off. The cancellation happened so late in the game that mastermind Joss Whedon simply doesn't have time to work up an adequate farewell--one with all the brilliant touches I'm sure he'd imagined for Angel's swan song. According to my sources, producers have contacted Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan and Michelle Trachtenberg about returning, but due to the late notice, none have yet been able to commit. Sarah might be available, but Alyson is starring in a London play and Michelle has been cast in a Disney movie, so they aren't expected to be back.

You missed the last 2 points:

4. The New Dynamic Is Working: It has been around for five seasons, but Angel really hit its stride this year with the addition of James Marsters and the big, fancy Wolfram & Hart set. The storylines have kept us on the edge of our seats--proving there is lots more life in the show.

5. It's One of the Best Dramas on Television: Sorry, but it has to be said. With shows like The Help, The Mullets and Run of the House getting screentime this season, the WB and UPN should feel lucky to have a show like Angel to avoid sinking further into a pit of mediocrity. Angel has more heart and soul than any of that cheesy "family programming" and boasts some of the best writing on television, which is why it's consistently championed by critics and fans alike.

Is Angel Back from the Dead Again?
And can the fans really help make the decision?

March 08, 2004 - Is Angel showing more signs of life? Possibly, according to sources close to the WB Network and the series producers.

According to an anonymous source posting on the WB bulletin board that has been confirmed in the past, the network is still talking with FOX and Mutant Enemy about another season.

"Hi all. Just wanted to update you guys. Just when I thought all was dead, I received a ray of hope," the poster wrote on the WB's Angel message board. "There are some additional meetings going on this week with the [Powers That Be]. I cannot elaborate with who but only tell you that it is someone we are all familiar with."

While the news was encouraging to the fans, the insider was quick to add a note of caution. "Don't get all excited yet. These are only talks. However, it appears that the several campaigns going on just can't be ignored.

"Even though this is not a shining light, there just might be a light at the end of the tunnel. This might not turn out to be anything. However, the fact that additional meetings are occurring means that at least somebody is listening."

Other posts have suggested that the WB is going to be taking a close look at the ratings for upcoming episodes, including the repeats. One complaint from the network is that the repeats tend to suffer in the ratings and an increase may make it easier for the network to reverse their decision.

Almost in response to the post, another source reported that Sky One, the satellite network owned by Rupert Murdoch (who also owns Fox, producers of Angel and Buffy, among others) has been told that negotiations for a sixth season of the vampire drama are underway and that there will be a new season available. Sky One broadcasts both Angel and Buffy in the UK.

-FOX / The WB

The cast of Angel: Not looking for new jobs just yet?

The WB pulling a series back from the dead is not without precedence. The series Jack & Jill and Felicity were both given short season commitments after having been initially cancelled by the network. Even Angel has been on the brink of cancellation only to have a 13-episode pickup from the network. The initial ratings from the first of those 13 episodes led to the network picking up 9 more episodes to finish out the 5th season.

They intend to judge the series based on repeats? That's kind of unfair IMO. A show like this relies heavily on producing something new each week. Plus, while I love the show, seeing each episode once is enough.

Angel Fans Bleed to Save Show

The petitions, letters, and billboards are supporting the all too early demise of Angel. Not enough for you? Do you want to do something that will also "Help the Helpless"? An idea was born and is growing on the discussion boards at SaveAngel.org. Across the U.S., and picking up speed in the U.K., fans are contacting local Red Cross Centers to set up March 17th as the Save Angel Blood Drive Day.

Several of the entries on the boards will give you specific information on how to set up the blood drive and what to expect when you go in to donate your blood. This idea not only brings Angel fans together to protest the untimely cancellation of the show, but it will give life giving blood to so many who need it. If you can not find a location near you maybe you can start your own blood drive in your area, contact your American Red Cross Blood Services (1-800-GIVELIFE/1-800-448-3543) and get in touch with a blood drive representative who will help set up your blood drive opportunity.

Who would give blood for this show?

I'm considering it, and I can't believe a tv show would make me go so far to do this!!!

David Boreanaz SPEAKS!!

David Boreanaz

"The fans are the people the network really screwed over."

Reading the interview, he pretty much had a season to season outlook on the show, but he definately sounds pissed at WB for how they treated the fans.

"How did you feel about the petition to save the show?
I felt bad for the fans. When the producers took the show and re-tooled it in a way that took it in a different direction, it should have been the responsibility of the network to put a keen interest into it during that time. So I don’t think they handled it in the classiest way. And the fans are the people the network really screwed over."

From savenangel.org
TARGET: Contact 20th Century Fox TV
(#117)posted Tuesday March 16 2004 11:58:25 AM by Save Angel Campaign()
New campaign to keep negotiations

Indications are that negotiations have stalled between The WB and 20th Century Television Productions for a new season of ANGEL, in large part due to the issue of increased licensing fee 20th hopes to see.

A number of people have written in asking how they can make their voices heard to the 'Powers That Be" at 20th. After discussion with the Strategy Board, and communications with people in the know, we are suggesting the following targets for your postcards:

Co-Presidents
Mr. Gary Newman and Ms. Dana Walden

Twentieth Century Fox Television
10201 West Pico Blvd
Building 88, Room 29
Los Angeles, CA 90035

Phone: 310-369-5962
Fax: 310-369-8726

Members of the Strategy Board suggest urging 20th Century Fox to "enter into meaningful dialogue" with the WB or any other parties who may be interested in picking up Angel, with the purpose of negotiating a licensing fee that would be "agreeable to both sides" and enable the series to continue.

20th does have a legitimate interest in increasing the licensing costs to cover the expense of production; however, they have a greater opportunity cost in not having a new season available for syndication and sale. As The WB's own Garth Ancier noted this past January, over 500,000 ANGEL DVD sets have been sold. At up to $50 each, that's a significant revenue stream for Fox Entertainment.

The Angel bilboard adds are up for 2 weeks!!!

http://www.sparklies.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=733

for all pictures.

Has anyone seen anything like that to save a show??

One would think that the WB licensing fees would be a lesser consideration vs. worldwide syndication and DVD sales for a 22 episode season. Perhaps WB is attempting to take advantage of that to support a lowball offer on their part.

Just hope the suits get past their issues and we get at least one more season...
