I'll chime in with the crowd liking the episode. I am concerned like many others about how the plotlines can sustain a weekly TV show rigor. Only time will answer that question, though.
Via IMDB, they are making T4 - called Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins in 2009.
But consistent with the plotline of the first movie, they only knew John Connor and his mother's name: Sarah Connor. They do not know the lineage, home addresses or anything else beyond those two names. That's why the T-100 terminator went to a phone book and killed the first two Sarah Connors that were listed.
Following your suggestion could lead to catastrophe for the Terminators:
1) They could choose to go back further in time and just wipe out civilization, but then they would for sure be wiping out their own creators, too. Thus they would not exist.
2) If they go back to wipe out any of John's great-great-grandfathers (even IF they knew who one of them were), they would have no idea if they would be killing a common ancestor of their creator(s) as well.

One thing not mentioned: They travelled forwards through time. That's the first time we've seen that. I imagine there'll be an episode where they end up in the future war.

I also like T3. I thought the action was rockin' (car chase beats that year's Matrix Reloaded chase by more than a mile), Arnold was cool and the ending was perfect.
At least knowing they're ignoring the movie makes sense. I would probably be more irritated had they been trying to stuff this show in between the two movies while there was contradictory dialogue in T3. But is the average viewer going to "get" that they're ignoring T3? Perhaps a "recap" at the beginning with Sarah that gives us a widely modified version of the films would have been a good way to let the audience know it's not strictly based on the movies.

It seems like TV budgets have caught up with special effects. (i.e. Heroes)
This is no movie for sure but I had no problem with the effects.
But when can these TV producers/directors learn how to stage a decent fight scene?
If this is suppose to be about action give me a little more than collar grabs throwing into the wall.
The closest thing to getting a real fight (when she gets the clothes from the frat guys) is seen basically off screen.
And does Serenity chick heal? It seemed her face was fine but she was wearing bandages on her chest area.

I've only seen Terminator 2 and I enjoyed this a lot. I hadn't even planned on watching it and watched it on a whim. I'll watch the rest of this season's run at least.

I hated T3.
I'll give this show a few more episodes to get going but the pilot was weak. Too many plot holes and timeline issues that have already been pointed out.
The FBI guy is lame, the bad Terminator is even lamer.

Like about half the people here, I really enjoyed T3. The action was okay but the ending had such a nice gut-punch feel while at the same time being pretty damn smart that I was impressed, and it masked whatever complaints I might have had.
I figured they might be ignoring it when the show opened with the rolling blacktop. I can live with that I suppose. Despite some of the questionable decisions I was still pretty impressed by the show. I won't be cancelling my season pass.

It apparently had huge ratings last night:
The Sarah Connor Chronicles at a hefty 18.29 million viewers and a 7.6/18 in the demo from 8-9 p.m.

That's pretty damn good, way better than what Drive pulled off last season. I guess it did benefit from the East Coast audience who followed the Giants/Cowboys game.

I liked the pilot.
But, then again, it was the pilot, usually they expend a lot of money in the pilot so people get interested. A lot of explosions, special effects, etc. I don't expect every episode to be like that.
So I'll see if I can stay interested.

Well, tonight it's facing repeats of the CBS comedies and Briefcase or No Briefcase, so we'll see if it can sustain similar numbers.

I'll be shocked if it gets anywhere near the same number. The football lead-in was even bigger than it would normally be: NY market team vs. "America's Team" (a 25.8 overnight rating).

The numbers were definitely inflated, but they were way higher than what 24's premiere pulled off last season also on a Sunday and also after football.

According to the schedule I see, 24 premiered on Jan 14 last year. There was no FOX game leading into that. CBS had the late Sunday Jan 14 Div Playoff game last year (NE/SD).

Had to laugh at Fox's ads trumpeting themselves as the leaders in groundbreaking television--this is groundbreaking? Still, I enjoyed the episode (and T3) and will watch more.

It was also Fox's highest-rated scripted series debut in over seven years among 18- to 49-year-olds (since Dark Angel, Oct. 2000) and in eight years in total viewers.
Granted, I'm not sure the competition was too tough last night and we have yet to see how it will fare on Monday nights opposite Two and a Half Men, Dancing/Dance Wars and Heroes. Gotta say though, I'd say the writers strike definitely helped this series in terms of competition.

Yeah, that was convenient. I didn't even think of that.

I'm thinking about where the series could go besides the obvious weekly-chase. Some possible plot lines:
Dyson's son is a teenager by now -- every time the Connors have shown up they've sent the kid to his room, but he has to know something about what happened to his father.
Sarah spent some time in Central America hanging with paramilitary types, and she has some friends in the US (the Hispanic family from Judgment Day) who could show up to help her, or help her hide.
The psychiatrist from the first two movies -- he may've been able to deny Sarah and Reese's story after the police station massacre, but he saw the T-1000 walk through a cell door. Maybe he can rationalize it somehow, but I think it'd be interesting to see what's happened to him since.
Kyle Reese is probably five or six by now -- I kinda hope they don't go there (too much possibility of paradox since a lack of Judgment Day should've either erased him from existence or altered his personality) but it is a possibility.
