He has now confirmed he's leaving at the end of the 7th Season:

I will miss him, but do hope the show goes on. Truthfully, aside from a few episodes, he hasn't been the same for a few seasons now character-wise. It may be nice to see someone else slide in for a season or two to finish out the series. Maybe even promote from within, or bring back Kathy Bates full time.

But I really hope you're wrong, and/or joking, about that last part. She is by far the worst part of the entire run so far.

I'm actually not kidding, as the growth she showed in the final episodes was very impressive.
I'm not sure they can rehabilitate the character, but Todd Packer would be pretty funny as well, I've always liked Koechner.

I like Kathy Bates a lot, but I never felt her character fully meshed with the show as a whole. If anyone comes back, I think Idra Elbis' character would be an interesting choice. He seemed to get a bit wacky towards the end. Or hell - give Ricky Gervais a vault full of money and have David Brent take over for a year or so.

I can deal with Koechner in the small movie roles, but I dont think I could deal with him as one of the main guys on the office. Another vote for David Brent here! And maybe he will make another music video too!

I can't even tolerate the few minutes Todd Packer has been on in the past. If he became a regular I wouldn't be able to watch.

I can barely get the urge to watch the show anymore and the day Carell leaves is the day I stop watching. Unless Gervais takes over. I will make an exception for that, albeit highly unlikely.

Just end the show. It's started to get depressing that some of these people are still working there after 7 years...

I love the show and I love all the characters but the show will not last after Carell is gone. He is the main reason the show has lasted as long as it has.

Those two are probably the #1 and #2 worst characters on the show.

There's a lot of comments in here about wanting the show to end or get canceled. Can't you just stop watching if you're not enjoying it anymore?

We'd prefer it go out on a high note, not get dragged on for an eternity of mediocrity. See "That 70's Show" Season 8, shudder...

What's up with all the Packer hate?
I think he's hilarious in small doses.
Anyway, even though Michael is one of my 2 least favorite characters on the show...the other being Pam, I don't see how The Office works without him. He's the glue that holds everything together. Even when Idris Elba was the boss, Michael was still around and everybody knew that eventually he'd end up being the boss again, so it's not like he was gone. If he's actually gone, I see everything falling apart. None of the other characters can actually lead the show.

I honestly barely remember Packer...to me it seems like he appears so infrequently that to warrant him coming back full time would take a lot of explaining. But I would love to see Idris Elba again, at least for a guest appearance. Which also, might involve a bit of explaining.

I hope that Packer plays a part in Michael's departure, but he's definitely not a character necessary in anything more than a small dose. I say that as somebody who actually enjoys a lot of what Koechner does (I actually really like the Gerald Tibbins character).
Stephen Root is really the only answer if this show goes on past May 2011, IMHO.

Rumored-to-return character now confirmed for up to 8 episodes next season;
Also, a few plot details for the upcoming season;
That last plot point sounds like it could provide not only some good comedy, but also guest spots for some characters we haven't seen in a while.
